On Hong Kong Police’s Storming into University Campuses – A Joint Letter by a Group of Macau University Students

We are a group of university students in #Macau. Knowing well that we cannot represent all university students nor speak in the name of our schools, we have decided to sign the letter as a group of university students in Macau.

The scenes in Hong Kong, a city only a harbor away, were almost like that of the June 4th Incident at Tiananmen Square 30 years ago – a repression of students who are resisting tyranny and fighting for democracy and freedom.

The Hong Kong Police betrayed their promises and unreasonably attacked university campuses time and again: they attacked unarmed student demonstrators with weapons like tear gas and sponge grenades, and even irrationally attacked Rocky Tuan, President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and staff. The Police also tried storming into university campuses with brute force in order to subdue students.

CUHK students guarded their campus with their lives against the demon-like police. Students had to maneuver in rains of bullets and tear gas. We are deeply disheartened to see students of our age shot; and in the fight to safeguard CUHK, countless students have been injured.

Every single scene that we witnessed is one that will be remembered in our hearts and minds.

Those in power, despite seeing what happened, are still indifferent to the students and Hong Kongers’ demands, even hoping to draw an end to the movement in a way similar to the June 4th 1989 incident. Obviously, Hong Kongers will not be threatened by this and they will only become even more united. We hope those in power can genuinely face the demands and stop resorting to violent repressions of students.

As a group of university students in Macau, we understand that we might not be able to support students in Hong Kong. Nonetheless, we have decided not to remain silent anymore. With this joint letter, we hope to express our support to those fighting for democracy and freedom and resisting tyranny, especially Hong Kong students.

Lastly:
Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times
Five Demands, Not One Less

Tonight, we weren’t there, but we all are here.

From,
A group of Macau university students

China Mainland students who study aboard in many countries post photos to support Chinese University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong: Freedom will never die. Communist party of China (CCP) will die for sure!

China mainlanders posted student IDs and notes to show support for students from Chinese University of Hong Kong and City University of Hong Kong. From what can be seen in the pictures, other institutes included University of Science and Technology of China, Sichuan University, Zhejiang University, Kyoto University (Japan), Harbin Institute of Technology, Harvard University (U.S.A.), etc. Some mainland students intentionally wrote with their left hands "Go Chinese U" and "Go Chinese U and City U," and left comments to explain, "Writing with left hand is to prevent (handwriting) identification by national security" Also some mainland students showed support with message, "all schools are in the same boat at this point in time. We are all Chinese University people today." Fudan University alumni wrote, "Freedom will never die. The Chinese Community Party will die for sure. Keep it up!"

A Nanjing University graduate displayed his degree graduation certificate and used it as a note to write, "Who still hasn't spoken up? If it is not me, who else is there to defend my city? I was born with rights, and my heart is still in control of my mind. Who would submit to fate and just shut up?" It also remarked, "I don't believe scattered verbal support could really work. But I still pay unmeasurable respect to you in my heart. Ah, today, we stay safe up hill. But one day we will also head to the streets. You are us in 10 years. Actually, we are your comrades from a different time."
Some even took out a Chinese Community Party membership card, and wrote on a piece of paper, "The reason why self-monitoring is ridiculous is because the Chinese Community Party is no longer the party that used to refrain from taking even a needle and thread from the people. God bless Hong Kong. Tyranny will fall."

The mainland netizen who organised this event texted, "Someone is already shifting. We all thank you for your support. Hope that you can stay safe. Comrades who have been photographed don't let the net patrols identify you. You are the hope of China towards freedom and democracy. Hope that you can influence more people to join the ranks and files of the rebels. The kindle of revolution has been lit. Regardless of whether you are separatists, Greater China believers, or autonomy advocates, we have only one enemy, which is the Communist Party. Liberate Hong Kong. Revolution of our times. And wish freedom and democracy will come to the soil of China soon."

Mainland net patrols have already started a propaganda campaign to rat out mainland students who support the protests in Hong Kong. One post wrote, "To report mainland students who participated in riots, dial 12339. Maximum reward is $50,000. Maximum reward is $50,000. Maximum reward is $50,000. They are not your good classmates and friends, but are totally the standard definition of terrorists."

Mainland students who support Hong Kong students responded, "Geez, white terror is spreading. When comrades support the people of Hong Kong, please adequately protect personal information. Use your left hand to write to avoid handwriting identification by the bad guys. The end of the internet terrorist groups like "Emperor Cafe" is not far away." "Cultural Revolution 2.0 sounds like very far away. Actually it is already so close to us." "Let them report. Try that a few a times, then they know it is still better to stay in Hong Kong."

International Academics and University Administrators’ Appeal to the Hong Kong Government:

Stop Police Attacks on University Campuses

November 14, 2019.

We are academics and university administrators at universities around the world. We express serious concerns about recent police attacks of university campuses with tear gas, rubber bullets and lead-bead rounds. Without clear targets of arrest nor search warrants, riot police stationed themselves on and around university property, provoking students with accusations of unlawful assembly. In the case of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, riot police stormed into campus and made arrests. The chaos that ensued have completely disrupted and undermined the functions of universities as sites of open inquiry, freedom of expression, and effective teaching.

We urge the Hong Kong Government to exercise restraint in managing the current crisis, ensuring that the Police follow proper protocol in executing their duties. Universities must have the flexibility and autonomy to deal with matters of conduct without police intrusion. Police should only enter campuses with search warrants.

We urge student protestors to exercise restraint in expressing their opinions and exercising their freedom of expression. We encourage them to envision non-violent means of communication as much as possible.

We have regarded universities in Hong Kong as global partners in academic and student exchanges. What we witness now is incompatible with our expectations of a world university. We may have to reconsider our partnerships with Hong Kong universities in the future if student’s safety is at risk and such blatant violation of academic and intellectual freedom continues.

What is being protected is Hong Kongers' Future

On my way to Chinese University of Hong Kong (CU), I saw many people carrying materials and guarding the university. Some of them are CU students or alumni, but many of them, I believe, were not students of CU.... Undeterred by tiresome labour and walking long distance each trip, they worked without complaint and just want to protect the students! Walking into the university campus, I saw many students and supporters resting at the Lady Liberty Square and Lingnan Field. Some people were building defence lines and transporting materials... I had never thought the CU campus that I was so familiar with would turn into a war zone in a turbulent of time....

Police Rhetoric Part 3/3
Police Renounced Agreement for Multiple Times and Halted Dialogue between University Head and Students at CUHK

During the Bridge No. 2 standoff at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on November 12, police had revoked agreement and concensus for at least three times and each time the police returned by firing massive number of tear gas grenades and bullets.

At around 15:00, police ignored negotiation with the university's pubic relations head and resumed firing.

At around 22:00, pro-Vice Chancellor Dennis Ng attempted to talk to the police again. Despite the concensus to retreat, police deployed water cannon truck and blasted lachrymatory chemicals at the scene.

At around 22:42, former University President said again consensus of retreat had been reached but police continued to deploy manpower to the University.

After all, can citizens take the word of the authorities seriously, not to mention any dialogue?

Audiences teared up during a radio program when discussing the situation in Hong Kong

(25 Nov) There is a phone-in section in a radio program of Hong Kong Commercial Radio in the morning. Various Hong Kong citizens had called to express their views about the election.

1. A 68-year-old man voted for the first time in his life in the District Council Election. The host asked why he voted. He started to cry and said, “My wife and I went to vote because of the protests at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She teared up when she saw the universities became like battlefields. We, as elders, could not go on the streets and protest. We could not leave this place as well. We could only use our votes [to voice our opinions]. (Tearing up continuously) What are the protesters fighting for? They have sacrificed their lives, dignity and future to fight for our freedom. I need the government to compromise and acquit all protesters.” The host asked him whether he got comfort from the election’s results. He sobbed for a few seconds and answered “Yes.”

2. A 44-year-old man used to be pro-police. After the 21 July incident he had become a yellow ribbon. “There’s no way we can tolerate triad members colluding with the police. The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) voted for the Extradition Bill. So I want to vote them out. Starry Lee Wai-King does not need to resign. Instead, I want her to go down with DAB. But I would like to thank Carrie Lam for uniting all Hongkongers.”

3. A local resident living in a walled village in the northern district revealed that his district councilor has always been the only candidate running for the district council election. This year he’s no longer uncontested, and is challenged by a young candidate who is willing to go into the village and talk to the residents. He and his two pro-democracy sons are going to vote for the younger candidate. “But I’m more worried about the Legislative election next year— it’s going to be unfair and they (the government) will use all means, for instance, vote-rigging. I hope the pro-democratic councilors will figure out what to do about it.”

4. A woman used to vote, but had no particular political stance. The police brutality and tear gas in the past 6 months made her realise that all Hongkongers cannot just focus on themselves. “It is really heart breaking to see how (these people) are treating our young people. I hope the elected District Councillors will demand Carrie Lam to set up an independent commission of inquiry to thoroughly investigate the police brutality that took place on 21 July and 31 August.”

5. An old man said in a sobbing voice that after months of despair, he was willing to line up for an hour to vote for a new candidate whom he did not know at all. “I hate how these people are taking side with the evil. This has to be a victory for the people of Hong Kong. I hope the newly elected District Councillors and the alumni of the Polytechnic University will go and save the kids trapped in PolyU.

6. A man lived near the waterfront of Yuen Long. He finally managed to see someone who was willing to come challenge the District Councillor who had been uncontested for years. “You beat up the citizens. Then expect them to vote you out. There is zero tolerance to police brutality. An independent commission of inquiry must be established. Five demands, not one less! Glory be…” He was so emotional that he was unable to continue.

Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist: as a Hong Konger, there is no way to be happy

(09 May) A one-way plane ticket led Reuters' photographer, Tyrone Siu, back to Hong Kong at the end of May last year. He was originally stationed in Taiwan and planned to be in Hong Kong only to report on the annual candlelight vigil of the June 4th Tiananmen Square massacre. Instead, he stayed for almost a year and witnessed Hong Kong’s most chaotic days. He and the team at Reuters even won the Pulitzer Prize in the Breaking News Photography Award this year for their series on Hong Kong anti-extradition bill movement. He described his feeling of winning the prize as very complex. "As a journalist, it is a great honor to win the Pulitzer Prize. It may be what a lot of media workers aspire to achieve. But as a Hong Konger, being in the story, and knowing that many people have been injured in it, I can't say that I am happy about a movement that hurts us all.
