Self-proclaimed senior government official at the Liaison Office Kuai Zheyuan accused of fraud worth 2 million, sentenced to 20 years in prison, criticises Hong Kong independence

Six years ago, it was revealed that a new newspaper titled Hong Kong Morning News was preparing to operate on Mainland Chinese funds but the plan eventually fell through. Its alleged secret sponsor Kuai Zheyuan, who had previously published political commentaries, disappeared shortly after. On 20 July, news emerged of Kuai's arrest in Mainland China in 2014. Sources show that he filed an appeal with High People’s Court of Guangdong Province in 2016 on grounds that included "service to the country with a special impact on the United Front" but was rejected.

Baidu's current information on Kuai describes him as a "professor" and adorns him with titles like "Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Development Strategy Research Centre" and "Executive Vice Chairperson of the International Institute for Strategic Studies". Of course, Baidu also provides a disclaimer that "anyone may edit the contents".

China Judgments Online announced the Second Hearing of Kuai Zhe's Crime of Contract Fraud and Fraud in August 2017. [The document] stated that Kuai, whose real name is Kuai Zhe, was born in 1968. He was involved in falsifying vehicle inspections in 2000. He also registered a private limited company using fraudulent capital and signed a collaborative deal with the Beijing Economic-Technological Investment & Development Corp. to swindle it out of CNY 6.8 million.

In 2010, Kuai told a certain Mr Yu, the Chairman of the board of directors for Grand Cosmos Holdings, that he was the Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Research Centre [sic] for the Hong Kong Liaison Office. He claimed to have close ties with leaders in the Supreme People's Court and the Organization Department of the Communist Party of China, which could allow Yu to win two lawsuits. Later, Kuai scammed CNY 2 million from Yu under the pretence of needing funds to facilitate relations.

On 29 April 2014, Kuai was arrested and placed under criminal detention. On 5 June of the same year, he was formally arrested. He was sentenced to 20 years of fixed-term imprisonment and ordered to pay a fine of CNY 880,000 (approximately HK 970,000).

Afterwards, Kuai appealed to the High People's Court of Guangdong Province. In the "Penal Notice of Kuai Zhe" announced in November 2017, he requested that the court pronounce him not guilty on grounds of factual errors and procedural violations in the case. He also claimed to be serving the country with a special impact on the United Front. The court rejected his appeal.

Proclaiming himself to be the Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Development Strategy Research Centre on his Weibo account, Kuai had published several political commentaries before his arrest. One such exposition titled "The alliance of 'two independences' is a dead-end" was published in Ta Kung Pao in 2013. It criticised advocates of Hong Kong independence for being the "dregs of the Chinese nation, to be condemned by history" and "destined for failure".

Norway says cyber attack on parliament carried out from China

Norway said on Monday that a March 10 cyber attack on parliament's e-mail system was carried out from China, calling on authorities there to take steps to prevent such activities.

"The cyber attack in March compromised the e-mail systems of our most important democratic institution. We will always react to these types of intrusions," Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soereide said in a statement emailed to Reuters.

An investigation by the country’s intelligence services had revealed the attack came from "actors operating out of China", the ministry said. "Several of our allies, the EU, and Microsoft have also confirmed this."

Hong Kong National Police revoked bail of two Apple Daily Executives

The National Security police in Hong Kong have revoked the bail granted to two Apple Daily executives arrested last month. Associate publisher Chan Pui-man and editorial writer Fung Wai-kong were reportedly being detained at police stations in Sau Mau Ping and Wan Chai, respectively.

The two were among the several senior Apple Daily staff arrested in June on suspicion of conspiracy to collude with external forces to endanger national security.

Police claimed that those arrested were playing a key role in the publication of articles that called for foreign sanctions against HK and mainland officials.

Earlier on the same day, another former senior employee, Lam Man-chung, from the newspaper was also arrested for the same alleged offence.

RTHK Bans Wordings that Suggest Taiwanese Sovereignty

#RTHK chief Patrick Li issued an internal notice today (July 20) to lay out new wording guidelines for the station's programs when describing #Taiwan, effective immediately.

The notice pointed out that RTHK's mission, as set out by its charter, includes increasing citizens' knowledge of "One Country, Two Systems". Therefore, the station's programs must strictly adhere to this principle with its word choices regarding Taiwan.

Specifically, names and prefixes such as "Republic of Taiwan", "National", "Executive Yuan" must not be used; Taiwan must never be referred as an independent sovereign state. The noticed also listed examples such as using "Taiwan regional leader" instead of "Taiwan president", and "Taiwan authorities" instead of "Taiwanese government".

Republicans Want Digital Yuan Restricted at Beijing Olympics

“Republican Senators Marsha Blackburn, Roger Wicker, and Cynthia Lummis urged the U.S. Olympic Committee to forbid American athletes from using China’s new digital currency at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, citing espionage and data-security concerns.

“Olympic athletes should be aware that the digital yuan may be used to surveil Chinese citizens and those visiting China on an unprecedented scale, with the hopes that they will maintain digital yuan wallets on their smartphones and continue to use it upon return,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter sent Monday to Susanne Lyons, board chair of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

U.S. and allies accuse China of global hacking spree

The United States and its allies accused China on Monday of a global cyberespionage campaign, mustering an unusually broad coalition of countries for an initiative angrily rejected by Beijing.

The United States was joined by NATO, the European Union, Australia, Britain, Canada, Japan and New Zealand in condemning the spying, which U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said posed "a major threat to our economic and national security".

Simultaneously, the U.S. Department of Justice charged four Chinese nationals - three security officials and one contract hacker - with targeting dozens of companies, universities and government agencies in the United States and abroad

Kodak Removes Instagram photos of Uyghurs' Mass Imprisonment in Xinjiang and Apologizes After Being Snipped by Chinese Netizens

They pointed out that their Instagram “is designed to promote creativity, not a platform of commencing politics" and apologized for the misunderstanding and offence caused by the post.

Chinese netizens forwarded the post to Weibo and launched a crazy flood to Kodak and Wack's accounts. Many Chinese netizens left messages on Wack’s posts “talentless and catch the eyeballs ideology” and “regardless how beautiful the picture is, if bias comes in place, the photographer will put a layer of filter on it”. Some Chinese media criticized, “Under Wack’s lens, the magnificent of Xinjiang is attractive but also carrying hidden messages”. Somebody supports him and praises his shots under his posts.

USA and NATO Condemn China's Malicious Cyberattack

The Guardian reported that the USA and NATO along with the European Union, United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Australia and New Zealand condemned Malicious Cyberattacks by China. The attack includes the invasion of 250,000 Microsoft Exchange email servers, affecting at least 30,000 US governmental and non-governmental organizations. It is the first cyber behaviour condemn by NATO since its establishment in 1949. Antony Blinken, the United States Secretary of State, indicates that the systemic cyberattack from China is irresponsible, destructive and brings instability, seriously threatening the economy and national security of the USA.

On the same day, the US Department of Justice prosecuted four China citizens, including three security department officials and one criminal hacker contractor, accusing them of extorting and endangering the USA national security. Between 2011 and 2018, they invaded the computer system of various organizations, universities and government institutions, asking for trade secrets of aeronautics, national defence, education, government, medical, biopharmaceutical and maritime.

How China’s Hacking Entered a Reckless New Phase

For years, China seemed to operate at the quieter end of the state-sponsored-hacking spectrum. While Russia and North Korea carried out hack-and-leak operations, launched massively disruptive cyberattacks, and blurred the line between cybercriminals and intelligence agencies, China quietly focused on more traditional—if prolific—espionage and intellectual property theft. But a collective message today from dozens of countries calls out a shift in China's online behavior—and how its primary cyber intelligence agency's trail of chaos increasingly rivals that of the Kim Regime or the Kremlin.

Huawei equipment quality still insufficient says UK

Huawei has made “no overall improvement” in its software engineering and cyber security quality three years after it promised to fix systemic problems, according to the UK body that monitors its equipment.

The annual report from the Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre (HCSEC) said that despite “sustained progress” by the Chinese company in resolving historic issues, new problems had been uncovered that indicated that the telecoms equipment maker was still not performing to the industry standard.

Huawei’s role in the UK telecoms market has diminished over the past year after the British government opted to ban the use of new 5G equipment from the Chinese company from the end of 2020. It also set a seven-year phaseout plan for kit that had already been installed.

Chinese Suppliers to Apple, Nike Shun Xinjiang Workers as U.S. Forced-Labor Ban Looms

Chinese factories that supply Apple Inc. and Nike Inc. and make other products sold in the U.S. are shunning workers from Xinjiang, as Western countries increase scrutiny of forced labor from the remote northwestern region where Beijing has been accused of committing genocide against local ethnic minorities.

Lens Technology Co. Ltd, a Chinese maker of smartphone touch screens and supplier to Apple and other companies, phased out Uyghur factory workers transferred from Xinjiang through a state-backed labor program last year, according to former staff and shop owners near one of its factories. The company has also ceased hiring Uyghur workers, according to current staff.

China says Microsoft hacking accusations fabricated by US and allies

The US and other Western countries on Monday accused China of hacking Microsoft Exchange - a popular email platform used by companies worldwide.

They said it was part of a broader pattern of "reckless" behaviour that threatened global security.

China says it opposes all forms of cyber-crime, and has called the claims "fabricated".

China's foreign ministry spokesman said the US had got its allies to make "unreasonable criticisms" against China.

The UK, EU, New Zealand, Australia and others joined the US to accuse Chinese state-sponsored hackers.

Hong Kong Authorities Accuses Speech Therapists of "Conspiring printing, publishing, distributing or copying seditious publications" for publishing "Sheep Village" children's books

There was prima facie evidence against them. The prosecutor gave a closing statement on #July18 that this case does not need to prove the defendants have seditious incitement or that someone is incited. As long as the defendants understand the publications are with incitement but still publishing, they can be charged. The prosecutors cite previous cases to emphasise incitement can lead to severe consequences such as rebellions and internal wars. It can be similar to the Crime of #Treason.

The defendants stated in the closing statement on #July20 that the related kid's books are not seditious but reflect the defendants' views on social issues, which should not be criminal. The definitions of "#hatred", "#contempt", and “#subvert" are vague and broad, which allow the authority to punish dissidents, causing a chilling effect. People are frightened to be arrested with no bail due to providing non-official perspectives, just like these defendants being under detention for a year.

The defendants then listed a number of former-UK colonies, including India, Kenya and Uganda, to show "the Crime of Incitement" is unconstitutional and has been abandoned.

The case was extended until July 30, 2022 to continue the closing statements.
