Operators of Pro-democracy Restaurant Arrested for Possessing "Prohibited Weapons" that Do Not Belong to them

On December 5, 2020, Mr Shum and Mr Wong, two operators of the pro-democracy restaurant "Jie Gange" told reporters about the police raid in a press event.

According to them, a large group of around 20 police officers forcefully entered into the restaurant at around 21:30 on December 4, 2020, citing the enforcement of social distancing rule as a reason.

Moments later, police officers walked to the rooftop area and found ten some backpacks. The operators explained that these backpacks do not belong to the restaurant and they don’t know whose properties they are.

HK Education Chief Denies Charges of Turning Liberal Studies subject into pro-China National Education

Hong Kong's Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung Yun-hung spoke on the government's plan to reform the Liberal Studies subject in a radio program hosted by RTHK on Dec 5, 2020.

He claimed that national education content in the Liberal Studies subject is not new and it is an "essential part" of the syllabus.

He said visiting China is "necessary" for Hong Kong students, and national education could "help" students know the “truth” and "cultivate the national sentiments".

He said that the Education Bureau was handling 40 complaints related to teachers. One of them was severe and was waiting for the defence of a relevant teacher.

Earlier, Chief Executive Carrie Lam openly stated what she called "controversy" about the Liberal Study in Hong Kong. Lam claimed that the subject is "a problem" since it became a compulsory subject in Hong Kong's high schools in 2009.

The authorities insisted that the course should be reviewed, for instance, by changing the methodology of assessment and cancelling the Independent Enquiry Study (#IES). The grade will only be a “pass” or a “fail”.

In the radio programme, the Education Bureau Chief claimed that visiting China can "enhance students' knowledge about the country". She spoke of the "misconception" in the society, that the Education Bureau was accused of turning liberal study into national education.

The government placed the new emphasis of Liberal Studies subject in China's development and the cultivation of national identity.

Yeung said, “Hong Kong students should have a clear understanding of the relationship with the state and the development of the country.” He emphasised, “Hong Kong is a part of China. National education was not something 'new' in liberal studies. Something is added, but it is not wholly new."

More senior officials of HK Examinations and Assessment Authority resigned reportedly due to extreme political pressure

In May 2020, the history exam paper question from the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (#HKDSE) was harshly criticized by pro-Beijing figures. The question asked students to discuss whether Japan did more good than harm to China during the war years.

Soon after the PRC's Foreign Ministry condemned the question, calling it biased and off-limits, Hong Kong government's #EducationBureau pressured the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (#HKEAA), an independent organization, to strike out the question because it “seriously hurt feelings and dignity of the Chinese people who suffered great pain during the Japanese invasion of China”.

This incident was said to lead to resignation of Yeung Wing-yu, Manager of the Evaluation and Development Department of HKEAA and Secretary of the Committee on Subjects of the History Section in August 2020.

Before leaving the Authority, Yeung revealed to his colleagues that his resignation was due to extreme political pressure. He suspected that the series of seemingly coincidences were in fact vigilantly planned.

Yeung pointed out that the DSE question was leaked way before the examination day in May while the question’s marking scheme was leaked two months later in July. During this time, his social media account was being repeated hacked for at least twice.

After HKEAA’s decision to invalidate the question on Sino-Japanese relationship on 22 May, he personally covered up students’ answers to the question. Yeung considered the incident the biggest humiliation in his tenure in HKEAA.

Liberal studies is another subject furiously pounced by the SAR government. Lo Ka-yiu, Senior Manager of HKEAA responsible for Liberal Study was fluttered by pro-Beijing mouthpiece in Hong Kong for his pro-democracy opinion calling for the city’s Chief Executive to step down.

In May 2020, Lo and Leung Tsz-yin, a manager reported to him, both resigned. In September, two Liberal Studies teachers, Fan Si-kei and Lam Yi-mei, were appointed to replace Lo and Leung.

However, it was reported on December 5 that Lam Yi-mei resigned despite an extremely short tenure of less than three months.

Since May 2020, a number of senior officials of HKEAA has either resigned or their contracts not being renewed, including the Authority’s Secretary General, principal officer of Assessment Development, as well as Senior Manager and Manager responsible for Liberal Studies.

Most recently, HKEAA announced appointment of their new Secretary General Ngai Heung-tung, Professor of Economics of Lingnan University who again has profound Chinese background.

Hong Kong Authorities Allegedly Threaten International Media on Election Reportage

On November 29, 2021, the Wall Street Journal (#WSJ) published an editorial titled "Hong Kong Says Vote—or Else."

It refers to the Legislative Council (#LegCo) Election which has been postponed by the Hong Kong government for a year. With the majority of the pro-democracy camp jailed and detained, the election will now take place in December. The newspaper described the situation as how "China fears a boycott of the sham vote it will hold next month."

The newpaper wrote:
"We bring you this message from Hong Kong because China’s Communist Party wants the world to forget how it crushed the autonomy it promised to the territory. On Monday authorities issued arrest warrants for two pro-democracy exiles who used social media to recommend that Hong Kongers boycott sham legislative elections scheduled for December."

4 days after the release of the editorial, Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, #TsangKwokWai, of the Hong Kong government sent a letter to the newspaper, denying all the claims.

On December 5, 2021, Wall Street Journal published the letter as a reader's opinion article, with the caption "Hong Kong Issues a Threat to the WSJ: We reserve the right to take necessary action,’ writes the regime, flagging an editorial for ‘incitement'."

While the Election is scheduled on December 19, 2021, Tsang's letter issued in December said the election will take place "next month".
