Canadians support harder line against China over treatment of Uyghurs

A strong majority of Canadians both approve of Parliament’s declaration that China is carrying out genocide against its Uyghur Muslim minority and favour a harder line toward the country, including economic sanctions and moving the 2022 Winter Olympics out of Beijing.

A poll by Nanos Research showed that 83 per cent of Canadians either support or somewhat support the unanimous vote by the House of Commons, declaring Chinese atrocities against Uyghurs and Turkic minorities in Xinjiang to be in contravention of the United Nations’ Genocide Convention.

“It’s pretty clear that Canadians see this as genocide and the polls suggest that they are ready for action and a hardline when it comes to responding to the government of China” Mr. Nanos said.

Government blocks motion to recognise China's treatment of Uighurs as genocide

The federal government and Labor blocked the motion proposed by Independent senator Rex Patrick to the Chinese government's actions against the Muslim minority as "genocide".

“It is most regrettable that Coalition and Labor Senators combined to block a vote on a motion that recognises the incontrovertible fact that the Chinese Government is engaged in a campaign against the Uyghur people that constitutes an international crime within the scope of the 1948 Genocide Convention," Senator Patrick said.

Liberal Senator Jonathan Duniam said the government did not believe the motion was an appropriate means of addressing the human rights concerns. Labor Senator Katy Gallagher also said the party strongly condemned the "human rights violations" against Uighurs and other ethnic minorities.

Hundreds of Uighurs protest Chinese minister's Turkey visit

ON Mar 25, nearly 1,000 Uighurs rallied in Istanbul as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Turkey to focus on coronavirus vaccines and the countries' extradition treaty.
Turkey is using the Chinese firm Sinovac's CoronaVac jab in its inoculation effort and is currently negotiating new deliveries.

Uighurs in Turkey fears that China is making new shipments dependent on Turkey's ratification of an extradition treaty that the parliament in Beijing approved late last year.

The protesters waved sky blue flags of Uighurs separatists' self-proclaimed state of East Turkestan as they gathered in Istanbul's historic old town chanting "China, stop the genocide!"

Nike, H&M, Burberry face backlash and boycotts in China over stance on Uyghur treatment

State-controlled media and online users criticized the two brands, with German sportswear giant Adidas and American brand Tommy Hilfiger also among those coming under fire.

Western fashion brands including Nike and H&M were facing growing calls for boycotts in China as Beijing pushed back with increasing ferocity against allegations of human rights abuses toward the country's Uyghur Muslim minority.

The United States announced in January that it would halt all imports of cotton from China's Xinjiang region â€” a leading global supplier of the material — over forced labor concerns, while major retailers previously issued statements expressing their concerns.

Japan Is Finding It Harder to Stay Quiet on China’s Abuse of Uyghurs

Japan is the only member of the Group of 7 industrial powers that did not participate in coordinated sanctions imposed on Chinese officials last month over the situation in Xinjiang, which the U.S. government has declared a genocide.

Public awareness of the issue is growing in the country, spurred in part by the work of Uyghur activists, and that is increasing pressure on the government to take action.

Japan has mustered little more than expressions of “grave concern” over the fate of the Uyghurs.

In some ways, the Japanese government’s tone on China has already toughened. When two U.S. cabinet officials visited Tokyo in March, their Japanese counterparts signed a joint statement criticizing China over its “coercion and destabilizing behavior” in the Asia-Pacific region and its violations of the “international order.”

Western brands caught between US and China over human rights

Western companies are being forced to choose between supporting human rights and profits from China, caught up in a battle the US and its allies are waging with Beijing over its persecution of Uyghur Muslims.

As China comes under scrutiny ahead of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, human rights activists are urging companies to take a stand over the repression of Uyghurs, which the US this week formally declared was “genocide”.

The rising pressure comes as Beijing has begun whipping up nationalist opposition to brands such as Nike and H&M that have voiced concerns about Xinjiang or vowed to eliminate the use of forced labour from the northwestern Chinese region from their supply chains. While some companies have stood their ground, others have removed criticisms from their websites.

'Xinjiang cotton is my love': Patriots on show at China Fashion Week

Designer Zhou Li, chief designer and founder of Chinese fashion brand Sun-Bird,  is a patriotic supporter of a boycott targeting several major western apparel brands in China that have expressed concern over alleged rights abuses in Xinjiang province.

Zhou said her garments on runway show at China Fashion Week, which featured slick minimalist designs with ruffles and ancient Chinese characters, used Xinjiang cotton exclusively.

“For our Chinese designs, I’m certainly right to support the Xinjiang people,” Zhou said.

China: Companies should resist boycott threats

Human Rights Watch said that companies threatened with Chinese government-promoted boycotts should stand firm in their opposition to forced labor.

Chinese authorities have recently encouraged consumers across China to boycott companies that have publicly expressed concerns about forced labor and other human rights violations against Uyghurs in Xinjiang.

“The Chinese government’s actions, effectively punishing the companies trying to uphold those standards, are a brazen attempt to weaken an emerging global norm,” Human Rights Watch said.

Exclusive: Investors press companies on human rights in Xinjiang

The group of more than 50 investors, backed by the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, said it is in the process of contacting more than 40 companies, including H&M, VF Corp, Hugo Boss and Zara-owner Inditex, requesting more information about their supply chains and urging them to quit situations that could lead to human rights abuses.

The investor alliance alleged that companies removing or moving statements in relation to Xinjiang were doing so in fear of commercial retaliation from the Chinese government. It also said compliance rules were being developed in other markets, including the European Union, obliging them to fully disclose their supply chains.
