The Longest Day: Housewives, Students, and Protesters in the Besieged PolyU

(20 Nov) As the Hong Kong Police Force surrounds the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, everyone who is trapped is not only facing the possibility of being imprisoned for ten years due to charges of riot. They also face death threats from the police who commences attack or employs live ammunition.

One of the demonstrators, Wai, whimpered to the reporter and said that he was afraid, but he was ready to fight until his last breath. "I do not want to bow to totalitarianism nor to the government; and I definitely don’t want to see this beautiful world and amazing city being ripped of its freedom and happiness by a totalitarian government.” What happened to Polytechnic University on this long day? The reporter visited different corners of the campus to learn about people who are still staying in the university – frontline demonstrators, FA (first responders), legislators, members of the ”Protect the children” group, and volunteers who prepared meals for them. Why are they fighting? What are their fears and what are their worries?

What have they experienced in being besieged and losing their freedom, and what message do they want to tell people who are outside?

[The battle against violence] Blocked exit routes pushed protestors to despair. Protestors still refuse to surrender and insist to stay till the last moment.

(20 Nov) “As far as I know, there are at least four missing. They said they will go down and walk around, check things out and return, but they never did. We tried calling but could not reach them…" This is the fourth day the protestors' stay at the Polytechnic University (Poly U). Those who have been fighting side by side have been arrested, sent to the hospital or were "disappeared" when they tried to break out. This led the number of protestors inside the campus to drop from about a thousand to less than 50 people. Only a few lucky ones successfully escaped the campus. A lot of protestors' health have deteriorated and have to reluctantly temporarily withdraw from the battlefield. They are resting in the campus hoping to break out again. Some of the protestors said that they suspect police have infiltrated the campus and among the protestors. Therefore, they do not know which escape route is viable, leading them to despair. However, they have no intention to surrender. If the break out fails, they will stay on the campus till the last minute.

Post Trauma

Ah Yen, a frontline first aider, has his back scorched by tear gas. After skin grafting, his wounds are yet to heal. While he has no regret providing first aid in the frontline, his mother thinks he is a “trouble maker” and asked him to leave home. The pain in the skin will subside eventually, but the divide in the family may take long to resolve.

"Awakening"

//British feminists were arrested and sent to jail in 1910. The leader of the worker union in US fighting for an 8-hour workday was convicted to the death penalty in 1886. 500 thousand soldiers died in the civil war so that the black man may be free. “Winter on fire” was a good show right? 125 people died in Ukraine in 93 days. In the history of humankind, the improvement of the system meant the sacrifice of countless revolutionaries.

Are the Hongkongers awakened? To abandon your life in an "advanced society" built on lies? To abandon your normal life because of your conscience? Let's make it simple, Did the Hongkongers wake up, and are they ready to give it all?"//

“Awakening”

The following is an account of a university student in Hong Kong:

" I am a CUHK student and arrestee for the charge of rioting.

I felt sad to watch the judgement of the court to Edward Leung Tin-kei and 811 on the charge of riot a few days ago because I can sense that the day I'll be locked up is getting and I will probably spend 6 to 7 years in prison. A new idea was in my mind. Do Hongkongers need another awakening?

When you choose to rebel and fight against tyranny, it is not only the choice of politics but also consciousness. You need to abandon normal life. It’s so-called “yellow ribbon”. Even you may be a peaceful protestor or investor, you have to get ready and get used to being in and out of prison for the rest of your life.

Why? It is because totalitarianism can’t tolerate any other opinion. Suppression will be more severe, and the bottom line will be lowered further. Common sense won’t exist anymore. Hong Kong Indigenous members were called “separatists” a few years ago. All pro-democracy parties are called “separatist” now. A few years later, supporting “one country two systems” maybe a separatist action.

You can be arrested if you fight with words (attacking TVB), fight with capital (money laundering) or fight with posters (property damage). Don’t think that you are safe if you don’t come out to march. After article 23 is passed, you can be arrested by just sharing news on Instagram. In China, you may be detained in charge of treason for prison punishment 8-10 year if you get any complaints or you if are Christian.

In a society without freedom, if you choose to fight against totalitarianism, life planning, family life, and a simple and peaceful life are not for you anymore. Your daily life will be paying fines, getting beaten, locked up in prison, being threatened, kidnapped, getting house arrest and being unpersoned. Li Wangyang, Liu Xiaobo and Chen Guangcheng's lives will be yours.

Thus, don’t feel sorry that our comrades are in prison. Getting locked up is unavoidable in the process of fighting against tyranny. We will continue after getting out. Where can you find a revolution without any sacrifice?

We enjoy our rights, freedoms and fairness in court now like we took it for granted. However, behind the pearl of the orient is the sacrifice of many nameless heroes.

British feminists were arrested and sent to jail in 1910. The leader of the worker union in US fighting for an 8-hour workday was convicted to the death penalty in 1886. 500 thousand soldiers died in the civil war so that the black man may be free. “Winter on fire” was a good show right? 125 people died in Ukraine in 93 days. Do Not Forget Our Brothers and Sisters in Taiwan

A letter written by a Hong Kong protester who is in exile in Taiwan:

"There is a feeling of being forgotten by Hong Kong people, as if they were all brainwashed by the Covid-19 pandemic. I beg you not to forget what had happened.

Even though we are now in Taiwan and it seems safe, we still wake up in terror in the middle the night. We have spent much on doctor visits already. It’s a mixture of feelings such as compunction, self-blame, and powerlessness, seeing our brothers and sisters in Hong Kong at court hearings and being suicided, etc.

We very much want to help and yet there is nothing we can do at all. I hope everyone will step out for freedom and justice and never forget!"

After going shopping today, I took a red minibus which broke down on my way home

(1 Jul) Of course, I went shopping during my day off. Nearly evening, I was getting very sweaty after shopping the whole day. I took the red minibus from Causeway Bay to Mong Kok and found out all the passengers were young people after getting into the minibus. The atmosphere was tense, and everyone looked tired. The driver asked, "everybody! Do you mind to pay extra $5HKD for changing the route by using Western Harbour Crossing tunnel (WHC)? If there's a roadblock in front of us, it may take a long time to wait for the search." Everyone agreed, "we don't mind paying a little extra".

The driver was moving in full speed to fight his way out. However, suddenly, "Damn shit! No gas." The minibus started to run slow at the slope of Fleming road. The driver called his friend urgently for help. I started thinking, "what can I do to help? Should the driver call for a tow truck? Do we need to switch to another minibus?".

Finally, our minibus stopped across from the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The liquefied petroleum gas filling station is behind a playground between Marsh Road and Wan Chai, we still had some distance to reach the station. A rescue driver B arrived with another minibus. I was thinking how can he help? Surprisingly, the way was to push our van by another van!!

We were all laughing hysterically
. People on the street stared at us. Young people in the minibus waved hands to people outside. Full of joy at that moment! Two minibuses moved forward by clinging each other. Finally, we arrived at the gas station. The driver said, "push, nearly arrive!" He asked the staff at the gas station if they could pull a gas hose out (the answer was no). Anyway, we reached the destination finally. Everyone got off and waited. Driver B checked if there was any scratch on his minibus, "Fuck! That worked." Driver A said, "Brother, let me know if you need help next time." Real code of brotherhood.
After filling up the gas, I received a call from my mother and spoke softly, "I just crossed the underwater tunnel. Don't worry."

After reaching the destination, the driver apologized sincerely to everyone. Before getting off, everybody said, "No worries!"
I felt like I was watching a movie from the 90s'. Everyone said Hong Kong was dead recently, but I have a feeling that the spirit of "every cloud has a silver lining" was rooted in the heart of every Hongkonger. It can't be eliminated.

"Are you kidding?!" Nope. We will always find the solution in the end because "we fucking love Hong Kong."

Editor's note:
1) That was the first day of Hong Kong Nationality Security Law went into effect. 2) A big rally was hosted in Causeway Bay that afternoon.
