The University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia tweeted an article previously quoting a human rights organisation’s statement that the human rights situation in Hong Kong was rapidly deteriorating and called for international pressure on China. The post was deleted next day morning after an apparent backlash from Chinese students. A UNSW spokesperson explained deleting the tweet because the comment was ”being misconstrued as representative the university”.
On Friday, 31 July 2020, according to The Guardian’s report, the UNSW published an article on its website quoting Elaine Pearson, the Australian director of Human Rights Watch. Pearson said that she was approached by a member of the university’s media team to give her views on the present situation in Hong Kong and how the international community respond.
On the same day, UNSW’s official Twitter account quoted Pearson’s comment in the interview that now is a pivotal moment to pay attention to Hong Kong’s rapidly deteriorating situation, and that “‘now is the time’ for the international community to put pressure on China to wind back recent infringements on human rights in Hong Kong”.
The tweet drew strong dissent from UNSW Chinese students who demanded an apology from the university. They shared a post on WeChat calling for a boycott and unfollow the university’s official Twitter. Global Times, a Chinese state English newspaper, highly concerned on this incident and published a report to criticise that article as interference in Hong Kong affair. The report quoted a UNSW student from mainland China that he and other students were in talks with the university to demand an apology for the tweet.

(9 Aug) “I was crying on my knees but they ignored me. Are the Hong Kong police so tyrannical that they could penalize me even when I was wearing a mask the whole time? What kind of society is that?” Last night marked the nineth month of the death of Chow Tsz Lok. A man in convenience-store uniform shouted " YiJin-er" to the police as he rode his bicycle through the Sheung Tak car park. He was then summoned by the police for violating the Cap. 599I "mask order". At one point, he was pleading on his knees. Apple Daily contacted the man in question, Mr. Hon, after the incident. He told the reporter what happened yesterday, during which he cried out in sorrow and criticized the police for being unreasonable.
Mr. Hon, who had a disgruntled look on his face, said he lives in Po Lam and works as a cleaner at a food court in Tseung Kwan O. Recently, he had a bicycle accident and hurt his back, so he had been staying home to recuperate. When he cycled past Sheung Tak car park last night, he saw many people mourning for Chow Tsz Lok in front of the altar. He also saw the police’s arrogance when driving away pedestrians, and he couldn’t refrain from shouting “NgaiZeon-ers” at them. A number of officers immediately approached him and asked for his ID. Universities in Hong Kong Dismantle June 4th Tiananmen Commemorative Symbols: "A Christmas Present for Beijing"
On December 24, 2021, the Management of the Hong Kong Lingnan University (#LU) removed and destroyed a commemorative relief of the 1989 June 4th Tiananmen Massacre that was installed on campus since 2010, without any notice and conscent from the students.
The action coincided with the dismantling of other commemorative statue and sculpture by two other universities in Hong Kong right before Christmas day.
According to the vice-chair of external affairs of the 43th Student Union of the Hong Kong Lingnan University, Tang Kin-Wah, the relief and the statue of the Goddess of Democracy arrived in Hong Kong in 2010. Under the coordination of the Federation of Students and the Alliance, the two commemorative structures had exhibition tour in all universities in Hong Kong, starting with the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) and ending in the Lingnan University.
Back in 2010, after discussing with the university management, the student union at Lingnan University handed in a plan stating that they hoped to preserve the relief permanently on campus. Later on, the Student Union was allowed to restore the relief and convened a permanent installation ceremony with the help of the university management. The ownership of the relief belongs to the Student Union.
After the University managemeng secretly and forcefully removed the relief on Christmas' eve on 2021, some alumni made a trip back and placed white flower on the now-empty site. They described the act as an "assignment" that the university president Cheng Kwok-hon "turned in" to Beijing. "It is his [Cheng's] Christmas present for the Central Government at the end of 2021," the alumni mocked.

//Amazon.com Inc.’s efforts to curry favor with the Chinese government included quieting criticism of President Xi Jinping’s book on its Chinese outlet, according to a Reuters report.
The Amazon.cn entry for Xi’s “The Governance of China” had its ratings, comments and reviews scrubbed and disabled roughly two years ago in response to an edict from Beijing, the report said. Triggering the request were reviews rating the work at less than the maximum five stars, according to one of the unidentified people familiar with the incident...
The experience recounted in the report mirrors that of Apple Inc., which has grown increasingly compliant with Beijing in recent years. Apple complied with 97% of requests from the Chinese government for user device information in 2019, up significantly from 65% in 2014.
Reviews for Xi’s book of speeches and writings are blocked only on Amazon’s Chinese website. One Amazon.com entry has received 74% five-star reviews.
Other U.S. firms, such as Yahoo! and Microsoft Corp.’s LinkedIn, have, by contrast, exited the Chinese market this year, citing an increasingly challenging business and legal environment in the country.//
