Pro-democracy activists renew calls for boycott of Disney’s Mulan reboot

Controversy over Disney's new film Mulan started in August 2019 after Chinese actress Liu Yifei, portraying the titular heroine, supported police in Hong Kong who have been criticized for using excessive force against protesters.
The actress posted the following message on the Chinese micro-blog Weibo:
"“I support the Hong Kong police. You can all attack me now” (in Chinese) and “What a shame for Hong Kong" (in English).
With the growth of anti-authoritarian sentiments around the world, more and more people from different countries exhibited solidarity in their resistance against Chinese influence.
The Milk Tea Alliance is one example connecting citizens from Thailand, Hong Kong and Taiwan who are concerned with democracy and human right issues.
The Alliance originates from an internet meme responding to the Chinese nationalist netizens' attack of a Thai celebrity couple for showing support for Hong Kong and Taiwan over the social media.
Backing up their peers in Hong Kong and Taiwan, Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, a Thai student activist, also called for #BoycottMulan and #BanMulan .

Disney Thanks Chinese Communist Party's Secret Agency Despite Their Brutal Crackdown on Uyghurs
After its lead actress' pro-police violence statement, Disney's new film Mulan was found acknowledging the Chinese Communist Party's security agency and entities in Xinjiang.
It was suggested that Disney may have sent its crew to Xinjiang in 2017, despite the Chinese government's increasing crackdown on Ugyhurs.
It is estimated that the Chinese government has imprisoned over 1 milliion uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in concentration camps for "reform", forcing them to give up their original languages, habits, cultures and religion.
The 8 entities acknowledged by Disney in Mulan's credits included the police bureau in Turpan, a city with large Uyghur population that has been subjected to mass surveillance and control by the CCP.

Founder of Taiwanese Forum PTT Boycotts Disney's Mulan, Hailing Hong Kong Women as "True Mulans"
Ethan Tu, founder of Taiwan’s AL Lab initiative and forum PTT, announced on 6 September, 2020 that he will resolutely boycott Disney's Mulan starred by Chinese actress Liu Yifei.
Tu pointed out that the true spirit of the heroic Mulan is carried by many women in Hong Kong who took to the streets to defend their homeland, the rule of law and human rights even though they were threatened by police violence.
In Tu's opinion, Chinese actress Liu Yifei, who was openly supportive of the infamously abusive Hong Kong police, was too hypocritical and therefore incapable of portraying the heroine Mulan.
"I will not watch Mulan. For I have watched the real Mulans [in Hong Kong] die for my ideals and freedom for a whole year. I cannot watch the hypocritical patriotic story of becoming a hero."
Tu lamented that the youth took to the streets for Hong Kong, but were threatened and persecuted by the Hong Kong police with sexual violence. Therefore, he could not look at Liu Yifei, who supported Hong Kong Police's indiscriminate violence.

Milk Tea Alliance disapproves of Chinese actress's support towards police brutality
Controversy over the film ignited last year, when its star, Liu Yifei, posted on the popular Chinese social media platform Weibo.
Translated, her message reads, “I support the Hong Kong police. You can all attack me now,” followed by, “What a shame for Hong Kong.”
Many voiced their disappointments toward Yifei for standing by the law enforcement and accused her of supporting police brutality and oppression.
In solidarity with people demanding democratic reforms, protesters in Thailand have also backed up their peers in Hong Kong and Taiwan, forming the Milk Tea Alliance. Ahead of Mulan’s release on Disney Plus on Friday, Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, a Thai student activist, tweeted, “I invite everyone to #boycottMulan #banMulan to make Disney and the Chinese government know that state violence against the people is unacceptable.”

Beyond Authenticity: the Spectre of Han Hegemony
//It is hard not to see the Emperor’s protectiveness of the Silk Road in #Mulan as an echo of China’s Belt and Road scheme, often termed a New Silk Road to build their economic prosperity. The violence of Islamic-coded barbarians echoes modern Chinese propaganda about Islamic terrorism in #Xinjiang, which is being used to justify the existence of concentration camps.
//Modern China is built on the idea that the Han people should be and are the inheritors of the Qing empire. These colonial possessions, like Tibet, East Turkestan (aka Xinjiang) and Southern Mongolia, are argued to share with the Han people a “common historical destiny” (Chiang Kai-shek, 1947). Other empires may have attempted (however ineptly and inadequately) some form of de-colonisation in the 20th Century, but China’s successive regimes very much did not.
//The cultural genocide happening in Xinjiang today is part of a larger project by the Chinese government to force assimilation and cultural “harmony” across their empire. It can be seen the policies mandating the use Mandarin in schools, a policy that has sparked protests in Southern Mongolia.
