Reuters: Rear Admiral and Director of Intelligence of the US Indo-Pacific Command Has Made Visit to Taiwan
Amid the tension between Cross-Straits relations, Reuters quoted two sources in reporting that Rear Admiral and Director of Intelligence of the United States Indo-Pacific Command Michael Studeman has made a covert visit to Taiwan
Both sources have stated that the Taiwan visit was made by Rear Admiral Studeman of the U.S. Navy. According to the US Navy’s website, Studeman is director of intelligence for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (J2), and has served in several key intelligence positions in the past, including as a first senior intelligence officer for China and has also completed an honors degree in Mandarin at the Defense Language Institute. Taiwan’s United Daily News (UDN) website reported that Studeman boarded the US military’s aircraft for executive transport C-37 and landed at Taiwan’s Songshan Airport yesterday (Nov 22).
The US Department of Defense has refused to respond to Reuters inquiries about whether Studeman had made a visit to Taiwan, while Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that a US official did make a visit, but refused to reveal further details. UDN reported that Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense, Navy and Air Force had not received any relevant information, and were hence unable to confirm Studeman’s visit. UDN also claimed that the visit involved US Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler. However, Taiwan Executive Yuan Premier Su Tseng-chang stated earlier that Wheeler is due to visit Taiwan in December.
