YouTube and Facebook announced that information against WHO recommendations would be removed

#YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki stated that anything that would contradict World Health Organization (#WHO) recommendations would be removed from the platform. She admitted that they aware the company policy would raise authoritative information. YouTube has clear policies that prohibit videos promoting medically unsubstantiated methods to prevent the coronavirus in place of seeking medical treatment, so those violating videos will be removed.

Meanwhile, #Facebook started removing misinformation about the outbreak from its platforms since in January. Recently, they announced that it will start warning users if they have liked, reacted or commented on harmful Covid-19 posts that the company has found to be misinformation and removed.
So, what is the standard of "Misinformation"? Guy Rosen, Facebook's vice president of integrity, mentioned in a blog post, "These messages will connect people to COVID-19 myths debunked by the WHO for leading to imminent physical harm." In fact, Facebook has made several #coronavirus related adjustments to its platform over the past few months.

Both social platforms are globalized. Netizens can freely share their thoughts and information through different platforms if it is not related to violence, sex and terrorism message. Yet, YouTube and Facebook have now broadened the restrictions to remove "anything that would go against WHO recommendations." In other words, they are censoring the information, by a standard set by the companies. This act seems like how the Chinese Government censor internet, not to mention that recommendations from WHO has been questioned by different parties in this outbreak.

Most netizens are well trained to judge information over the internet these days. It is our right to receive different information from others.

Do social media have the authority to censor information we receive?

Youtube’s CEO was involved in the founding of Google

Youtube CEO Susan Wojcicki recently said that video that “goes against” WHO guidance on the pandemic will be blocked. Wojcicki was involved in the founding of Google and became Google's first marketing manager in 1999. She later led the company's online advertising business and was put in charge of Google's original video service. After observing the success of YouTube, Wojcicki proposed the acquisition of YouTube by Google in 2006. Youtube has already banned videos that link 5G to the spread of COVID-19.

YouTube is deleting comments with two phrases that insult China’s Communist Party

//YouTube is automatically deleting comments that contain certain Chinese-language phrases related to criticism of the country’s ruling Communist Party (CCP). The company confirmed to The Verge this was happening in error and that it’s working to fix the issue.

//Comments left under videos or in live streams that contain the words “共匪” (“communist bandit”) or “五毛” (“50-cent party”) are automatically deleted in around 15 seconds, though their English language translations and Romanized Pinyin equivalents are not.

//The accidental censorship is even more puzzling considering that YouTube is currently blocked in China, giving its parent company, Google, even less reason to censor comments critical of the CCP or apply moderation systems in accordance with Chinese censorship laws.

//Google has frequently been criticized for accommodating the wishes of the CCP by censoring content. Most notably, it created a prototype search engine known as Project Dragonfly that complied with Chinese state censorship. The project, which was never deployed, is part of the company’s long-running struggles to enter the Chinese market.

//When news of Dragonfly leaked in 2018 in a report from The Intercept, Google was criticized by politicians and its own employees for selling out its principles. During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in June 2019, the company said it had “terminated” the project and that it had “no plans to launch Search in China.”

The political censorship has increased on Youtube amid the filtering of the Chinese word “Gong Fei” on the platform 1/3

Internet users have found that YouTube- an overseas online video sharing platform, is automatically filtering the comments with the Chinese word “gongfei” (literally means “Communist Bandit” in Mandarin). YouTube has previously been alleged of cracking down on freedom of speech by labelling videos regarding Covid-19 as “Not suitable for most advertisers” with a yellow dollar sign. These series of events made the public questions whether the political censorship on YouTube platform has connections with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

The political censorship has increased on Youtube amid the filtering of the Chinese word “Gong Fei” on the platform 2/3

On 13 May, many Chinese-spaking YouTube users found that any comments they left in any YouTube video’s comment section that contains the phrase “gongfei” will be removed by the platform--soon it was confirmed by many other YouTube users. According to the video provided by one of the YouTube users, the comment “gongfei” initially can be displayed in the comment section, but it disappeared only seconds later when the user refreshed the page. The user tried for three consecutive times, and found that comments with “gongfei” would be filtered within 15 seconds after posting. The user believed that YouTube has some kind of algorithm that will censor “sensitive words”.

https://twitter.com/shijianxingzou/status/1260460855717777415

Such a way of censoring “sensitive words” is very secretive and hard to discovered as Internet users normally won’t come back and check whether their comment has been successfully posted as long as it has been initially displayed.

YouTube’s action soon caused great attention among the Chinese-speaking users and many of them condemned the censorship and expressed their anger and disappointment. Some users wondered if YouTube found a more capable AI expert than Li Feifei while some others said disappointedly that “Money can make anyone do anything”

User @DrplumberUS said that he posted the phrases “gongfei” and “meidi” (literally means “American Empire”) in the Youtube’s comment section for five times respectively and found “gongfei” was all automatically filtered by YouTube while “Meidi”, however, was successfully posted

User @Feng1990122 also commented that “I posted in the entertainment channels based in the US and it’s true. Looks like there is a Chinese Communist Party branch in Google.

User @sitaideng said:” Onshore US citizens shall sue Google and Youtube for cracking down on freedom of speech.”

@Jumplittlefox is calling internet users to express their disagreement on Google’s censorship because “if you remain silent today, there will be more ‘sensitive phrases’ on YouTube, and eventually the platform will become exactly the same as Chinese social media software. But I don’t think this will happen because the Westerners will soon realize the issue and fight back.”

@SZheng1967 pointed out that “the evil Communist Party is dominating the Western Media. Western people are making deals with the evil and are surrendering themselves to the Communist Party--such action has caused great concerns to the world. We are here to urge the shareholders to take good care of their enterprise’s managing board for the sake of our next generation and for the sake of the entire human race. If you guys keep making deals with evil, there will be greater disasters in the near future!”

And other Internet user said that by filtering the word “gongfei” and yet turn a blind eye to “meidi”--a phrase that commonly used by the Chinese army of trolls to criticize the US Government, it’s obvious that YouTube is pro-Chinese Communist Party when it comes to the censorship of the comments and they’re urging US Government to take precaution measures.

The political censorship has increased on Youtube amid the filtering of the Chinese word “Gong Fei” on the platform 3/3

As a matter of fact, YouTube is cracking down the videos related to COVID-19 since the outbreak commenced. A bunch of videos were labelled by YouTube platform “Not suitable for most advertisers” even if they were sharing the information of the pandemic and introducing the precautionary measures to prevent the virus from spreading.

It’s common sense that advertising revenue is one of the major source of income for YouTubers and if one video is labelled as “not suitable for most advertisers” with a yellow dollar sign, the video will not appear in the “recommended for you” tab and only a few adversaries (or none) will be able to insert their advertisements to the video. By doing so, YouTubers’ advertising revenue will be reduced significantly and there will be less people viewing their videos.

YouTube has caused great dissatisfaction among the YouTubers and it is criticized for cracking down on freedom of speech and performing censorship on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party, and many internet users have doubted that there are some dark deals behind the misuse of yellow dollar signs.

A bunch of internet users have started a petition on the “We the people” site, requesting the platform to explain the relationship between the yellow dollar sign and the filtering “sensitive phrases”, and they are expecting the White House to investigate YouTube’s misconduct. The petition started on 21 Feb and more than 100,000 people signed the petition to show their support within a month.

The grave doubts about Google and YouTube

The latest controversy comes from today that if a random code is typed in the Google search box, it will bring up the gas explosion charity dispute in Taiwan, which was used by Kuomintang to smear Chen Chu during the previous presidential election in Taiwan.

What do we see further ahead?

YouTube has been caught red-handed for automatically deleting messages containing the words "communist thief" or "fifty cent army (Wu Mao)" for a long time. According to The Verge's article, Youtube has been deleting the related comments since last October.

Last month, #GoogleTranslate has suddenly replaced Taiwan wordings with China's wordings with a "community certification" label next to them. Examples include the word “video” will be translated to “Shi Pin” (視頻; instead of “Ying Pian”, 影片) while the word “software” will be translated to “Ruan Jian” (軟件; instead of “Ruan Ti”, 軟體), to list just a few.

Google put the blame to the Youtube incident on its algorithm, but they haven’t said a word about the translation incident. What will be the excuse of the “Chen Chu, charity fund” incident this time?

I would like to ask: How much longer do Google have to hide behind “the algorithm” explanation ? How much longer do they have to keep us quiet?

Chinese University of Hong Kong Deletes Content on General Education Salon

While the public broadcaster #RTHK was deleting programmes on YouTube, the General Education (#GE) Salon of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) has also been found deleting its own videos on its Youtube channel.

It used to be a platform where professors share their knowledge relating to practical experiences in Hong Kong. The videos deleted include “1984 and the Brave New World” , “On Liberty” and Benny Tai's “the Rule of Law Culture”

Professor Chow Po-chung, a speaker on the channel and well-known public intellectual, is shocked by the news. “These are a kind of public resource! Of course I wish they can be left undeleted.”

#YouTube terminates campaign channel of sole Hong Kong chief executive candidate #JohnLee, citing need to comply with #US #sanctions on ex-official

//Online video sharing platform YouTube has terminated the campaign channel of Hong Kong’s sole chief executive candidate John Lee Ka-chiu, citing the need to comply with US sanctions placed on the former official.

The platform, operated by US giant #Google, made the rare move in taking down Lee’s YouTube channel early on Wednesday, clipping the Beijing-endorsed candidate’s ability to share videos of him meeting different sectors publicly.//
