12 Light Beams Shine on HK's #LionRock, Calling on International Society to #Save12HKYouths

On the evening of October 12, 2020, pro-democracy Hongkongers climbed up Lion Rock and projected 12 laser beams along the ridges of this local hill.

The 12 light beams symbolize the 12 Hongkongers who were 'extradited' to China and detained for 51 days since late August this year. The participating citizens demanded the Chinese government to return the 12 detainees to Hong Kong and called on the international society to raise concern over the issue.

#CarrieLam Postpones #PolicyAddress, Citing Beijing as a Reason; Democracy Front in HK: Lam is a PRC's Puppet, a mere Chinese Official

On 12 October 2020, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam suddenly announced the postponement of the annual Policy Address from October 14 to Mid-November, citing the need to "discuss policies beneficial to Hong Kong with Beijing" as a reason.

Lam will go to Shenzhen to attend an event where Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping's presence will be expected on Oct 14, the original date scheduled for the policy address. Lam will go to Beijing at the end of October.

The democracy front condemned Lam for being a puppet of the Chinese government and a mere Chinese official, who inferiorated Hong Kong's Policy Address and handed Hong Kong internal affairs over to China.

Convenor of the Democracy Front, Wu Chi-wai pointed out that in the past, the Policy Address in Hong Kong had never been postponed, even when communication with the Chinese government was required. The unprecedented postponement this year indicates China's demand to approve the Chief Executive's Policy Address before its release.

Moreover, when asked in the press meeting if the "country" is being prioritized in the "one country two systems" policy, Lam denied and claimed that she "voluntarily" made the postponement and she is "still able to pick a date [for the policy address]".

Meanwhile, Lam refused to comment when she was asked whether she would visit the 12 pro-democracy Hongkongers detained in Shenzhen, China.

Convenor of the Democracy Front, Wu Chi-wai said the Hong Kong government has never cared about the 12 Hongkongers and their familes, nor have they prioritized Hong Kong and it's people in policy making.

The World Against China - Chinese Embassy Instructs Indian Media to Follow One-china Principle, Indian Media Responds “India Is Free” in Editorial

Previously, the Chinese Embassy in India instructed Indian media to follow the One-China principle when reporting on Taiwan and Double Ten celebrations and was met with much dissent. Hindustan Times published an editorial on Monday reminding China that it should not consider putting pressure on media in democratic India and calling on China to change its behaviours.

The Hindustan Times editorial on Monday was entitled “A reminder for China: India is free”. The article pointed out that on the eve of Taiwan’s National Day, the Chinese Embassy in India sent many Indian media agencies “suggestions” requesting them to report in compliance with the "Indian government's position on the Taiwan issue" and not to violate the One-China principle. The move incurred the enmity of the Indian press. India’s Ministry of External Affairs replied in a statement emphasising that Indian media may freely report on any topic as they please.

The editorial stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Delhi spokesperson Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga hung up posters celebrating Double Ten Day outside the Chinese Embassy in India, and was met by the disparagement of the Embassy. The posters were subsequently removed because they “have not been authorised yet”. The incident reflected the undemocratic nature of the Chinese Embassy, consistent with the nature of CCP’s dictatorship. Nevertheless, “India is a proud democratic country with free and vibrant media, as well as transparent and healthy foreign policy debates.”

BTS Accused of Insulting China in a Speech that Mentioned the 70th Anniversary of the Korean War

South Korean boy band BTS made remarks on the Korean War recently, resulting in the accusation of insulting China by some Chinese netizens.  Some business brands immediately removed products endorsed by BTS from Chinese websites, according to reports.

BTS was recently granted the General James A. Van Fleet Award for their contribution in promoting Korea-US relations through their musical works.  Their acceptance speech kicked off the controversy.

RM, the leader of BTS, said that this year was the 70th anniversary of the Korean War and “we will always remember the history of pain that our two nations shared together, and the sacrifices of the countless men and women”.  Chinese netizens accused this remark as insulting to China, claiming that BTS did not respect the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army who died heroically in the Korean War.  Some people even initiated a BTS boycott.

China-India Talks End in Blame Game as Military Presence on Border Mounts, Beijing Warns New Delhi Against “Misjudgement”

The latest military talks between India and China have broken down in mutual blame as their border conflict sees another round of escalation. Held on 10 October, the corp commander-level talks, the 13th round of their kind, had been expected to ease tensions along the two countries’ long-disputed border.

The talks came amid Indian media reports of Chinese troops crossing the boundary and being briefly detained. News 18, a partner of CNN in India, quoted high-level Indian officials as saying that 200 PLA soldiers were intercepted while crossing the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh, parts of which are claimed by China as belonging to South Tibet. Some of the soldiers were briefly detained before local commanders from the two sides came to a settlement. Chinese state media have denied the reports.

Both countries have reportedly ramped up presence of troops along the border by the tens of thousands over the past year. Military activities in the region are now at their peak in decades.

There is currently no agreement to the Sino-Indian border with the two countries tentatively separated by the LAC. News 18 has quoted sources as saying that both sides have been patrolling the LAC and that encounters can last hours if one happens. The sources said the area had largely been peaceful with both sides complying with their agreement.
