Hong Kong Singer-songwriter Anthony Wong Denounces National Security Law: Using Art to Recall Life Will Become a Crime

Anthony Yiu-ming Wong criticized China for ignoring the opinions of Hong Kong people and directly enacting the Hong Kong version of the "National Security Law". He lamented that "remembering history or life with music, text, images, or artwork will one day become a crime."

Editor's note: Anthony Wong Yiu Ming (Chinese: 黃耀明; born 16 June 1962) is a Hong Kong singer, songwriter, actor, record producer and activist. His song Criminal Remembrance (回憶有罪) commemorates the Tiananmen Massacre.

Artists and creative workers condemn the #NationalSecutityLaw for infringing creative autonomy

Meeting the press on May 28, musician Adrian Chow, who is also a board member of the Art Development Council, warned about the danger of the arbitrariness of the National Security Law.

"No choice, no chance to listen to 'Glory to Hong Kong anymore," he projected a scenario under the National Security Law bitterly, "we may be forced to listen to William Chan's War Wolf disco, or Hong Kong Coalition's theme song".

Chow pointed out free speech and freedom of the press will be deeply affected: Disclosing the police officers' breach of law may be counted as "disclosure of state secrets".

Chow compared the absurdity of the events in the Legislative Council to the authorities' "moving cordon": Pro-demoracy lawmaker Hoi-dick Chu was expelled for holding the sign "Best Chairman Starry Lee". LegCo president Andrew Leung, of the pro-Beijing camp, claimed that Chu's act was insulting.

Chinese AI firm blacklisted by U.S. gave funds to York, Queen’s universities

Two Ontario universities, York and Queen’s, have been collaborating with a major Chinese artificial-intelligence company that has been blacklisted by the U.S. government for supplying surveillance equipment used against Muslim Uyghurs.

iFlytek, a partly state-owned enterprise that specializes in voice recognition, provided $1.5-million to Toronto’s York University in 2015 to create a new iFlytek Laboratory for Neural Computing and Machine Learning and a chair at the Lassonde School of Engineering. Queen’s University, in Kingston, received $727,000 in 2019 from the Chinese AI company to develop learning models that detect and process speech.

#Letter from Jailed Activist #FigoChan: "As long as we keep our faith, we can advance through adversity together"

Figo Chan, League of Social Democrats committee member and vice-convener of Civil Human Rights Front, was handed a heavy sentence of 18 months for organising a march on Oct 1 2019, which the police deemed an unlawful assembly.

Before his sentence was announced, Chan wrote an open letter to Hong Kongers to thank them for giving their all to fight for democracy, freedom, human rights and justice.

He also said that, although Hong Kongers have a tough road ahead, “don’t forget, the seeds we've sown will certainly lead to a harvest in the future."

In the letter he wrote on May 22, 2021, Chan thanked Hong Kongers for their effort that raised worldwide attention to the Anti-ELAB movement and forced the government to withdraw the act. He felt “proud and touched”.

He also mentioned, although more and more activists are sentenced to prison for violating the National Anthem Ordinance and the National Security Law, Hong Kongers should persist in their belief.

“The road to democracy is very long. As long as we keep our faith, we can advance through adversity together. One day, we will meet again under the pot (Legislature Council Complex)."

Now that Civil Human Rights Front (#CHRF) is facing the risk of being banned by the government, Chan said that although he is being imprisoned, “I still insist that CHRF will not disband until the end. I also hope everyone will still keep fighting for Hong Kong, and speak up on June 4, July 1, etc on behalf of the arrested, exiled, in the name of freedom”.

In closing, he wrote: “There is hope as long as we are still here. Five demands, not one less! May glory be to Hong Kong.”

Canadian PM Asks Trudeau Whether to Ban the PLA Scientists into Sensitive Research Facilities and Trudeau Indicates Against Racial Discrimination

Is criticizing the Chinese government an action to discriminate against Asians? Recently, the Chinese government's infiltrating the Canadian laboratories attracts attention. A Parliament Member questioned whether the Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau would prohibit the Chinese government and the military from sending scientists to Canada’s sensitive research facilities. Trudeau indicated that he “will not greet and succumb to anti-Asian's discrimination”. Michael Chong, a Canadian Parliament Member being sanctioned by China for Hong Kong issues, announced a joint statement with Kenny Chiu to criticize Trudeau for conflating the two matters and falling into the trap of the CCP, and to ask him to withdraw his remarks.

Report found Beijing's exploitation in search results to shape views of Xinjiang and COVID-19

China’s global campaign to expand the reach of its political positions is said to help it secure a coveted piece of online real estate: first-page search results on Google and other major Western portals.

Content reflecting Beijing’s position on its human-rights record and the origins of Covid-19 now regularly appears among top results on Google, Bing and YouTube, according to a new report from the Brookings Institution and another Washington think tank, the Alliance for Securing Democracy, which seeks to study and resist the authoritarian government.

The report found the Chinese state media are "remarkably effective" at influencing the content returned for the term “Xinjiang” across several search types.

“Xinjiang,” which is among the most neutral terms in our data set, regularly returned state-backed content across news searches, with at least one Chinese state-backed news outlet appearing in the top 10 results in 88% of searches (106 out of 120 days searched).

On YouTube, state media appeared among the top 10 results in searches for “Xinjiang” in 98% of searches (118 out of 120 days searched).

China’s grand tour: Opposition mounts to Beijing ‘expansionism’ in Pacific

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has accused Beijing of unnecessary expansion of its security reach, as MPs urge her to counter the superpower's "persuasion and pressure".

And Australia's new foreign minister has flown urgently to Fiji in a last-ditch bid to dissuade Pacific Island nations from signing up to a new Chinese security pact.
