Smile for the camera: the dark side of China's emotion-recognition tech

Ordinary people in China arenā€™t happy with emotion-recognition camera, but they have no choice. They have to live with it if the police say there have to be cameras in a community.

Emotion-recognition technologies in which facial expressions of anger, sadness, happiness and boredom, as well as other biometric data are tracked are supposedly able to infer a personā€™s feelings based on traits such as facial muscle movements, vocal tone, body movements and other biometric signals.

Similar to facial recognition, it involves the mass collection of sensitive personal data to track, monitor and profile people and uses machine learning to analyse expressions and other clues.

Critics say the technology is based on a pseudo-science of stereotypes, and an increasing number of researchers, lawyers and rights activists believe it has serious implications for human rights, privacy and freedom of expression.

China will bully the West like Hong Kong if governments do not reduce ties, report warns

Western governments should reduce trade with China so they are not vulnerable to bullying from Beijing, a new report citing the example of Hong Kong has warned.

Beijing has been helped to achieve its political ambitions in the city by a steady rise in investment from mainland China over the past two decades, finds the report by Hong Kong Watch, an advocacy organisation.

ā€œThe massive influx of red capital explains why Beijing failed to pass national security legislation in 2003 but succeeded in 2020,ā€ said Johnny Patterson, policy director of Hong Kong Watch.

Chinese Netizens Slam Keanu Reeves for Plan to Attend Concert by Tibet House, Call for Boycott of Matrix 4

Chinese netizens have slammed the Canadian actor #KeanuReeves for his plan to attend an online charity concert hosted by the #TibetHouse on #Mar03 US time, calling for a boycott of his new film.

Hosted annually since 1989, the concert has featured a roll call of prominent musicians including David Bowie. Proceeds from the concert go to the Tibet House, formally known as the Culture Centre of H. H. the Dalai Lama, an international nonprofit organisation dedicated to preserving, displaying and protecting traditional Tibetan culture.

Reeves is himself a musician, having been the bassist of the band Dogstar in the 90s. He is reportedly areligious but interested in Buddhism. Years ago, he starred as Prince Siddhartha in Little Buddha, a biopic about the Gautama Buddha.

Chinese netizens are upset by Reevesā€™ plan to attend the concert. Some denounced it as an ā€œinsult to Chinaā€, while others consider it a show of ā€œsupport for breaking up Chinese territoryā€ and called for a boycott of #TheMatrixResurrections, his latest film.

A netizen claimed that while they have been a diehard Matrix fans, they ā€œwill not contribute a penny to its box office numbersā€. Others said they are happy they can ā€œnow save a few bucksā€, with some telling Reeves to ā€œstay away from politics if [he] know[s] nothing about itā€.

Reeves has not responded to the criticism.
