Authorities Ban Annual July 1 Protest in Hong Kong, Democracy Front Calls For Solidarity

This year marks the first time that the police issued a “letter of objection” for a march that was traditionally slated to happen on every July 1.

Figo Chan, convenor of Civil Human Rights Front, said this afternoon that he initiated the march on 1st July on his own accord, together with Eddie Chu Hoi-dick, a legislation council member, Wu Chi-wai, a lawmaker and the current chairman of Democratic Party and other pro-democracy camp lawmakers. He said that he understood that it is tough to withdraw the national security law, but Hongkongers have to make their cries for freedom heard.

"Don’t think what others can do for you. Think about what you should work hard for yourself," said Chan, in a bid to rally the support of Hongkongers for the upcoming march.

Chan also mentioned that the objective of the march remains consistent to the aims of Civil Human Rights Front, to “Protest against the national security law, and reiterate the five demands.”.

The assembly point and starting time of the march remains unchanged. The route is from East Point Road in Causeway Bay to Chater Road in Central. He said that this march will involve people from a wide spectrum in solidarity.

He emphasized that the number of people present for this march is important. He urged people to come out together and make it known to the government, “not to accuse anyone innocently. Not to disqualify anyone from the Pro-democracy camp from joining election.”

He explained that he did not have any prior discussions with Civil Human Rights Front about this march, and that the League of Social Democrats respected Chan's decision.

Chan said he had been accused of 3 or 4 times. He understands that being arrested this time round again runs a very high risk for him, but he still wants to encourage Hongkongers to not be silenced by fear, and to not give up.
