FBI arrests Arkansas professor on fraud charges over financial ties to China

Simon Ang, 63, a professor and also the director of the High-Density Electronics Center at the University of Arkansas’s department of electrical engineering, has been arrested and charged with wire fraud.

According to a criminal complaint filed against him, Ang had close ties with the Chinese government and Chinese companies. He failed to tell federal authorities about his jobs and payments from these sources when applying for grant money from NASA. Since 2013, Ang’s work received more than $5 million in federal grant money from NASA and other agencies.

This case marks the latest strike by the Justice Department against academics that violate ethics rules for federal grant money by hiding their financial and professional arrangements with China, who runs a number of “talent” programs to attract accomplished scientists and experts from around the world.

The CIA believes China tried to stop the WHO from declaring a global health emergency

Beijing was importing billions of medical equipment in January and February. The CIA believes China tried to prevent the WHO from declaring the coronavirus a global health emergency and suppressed information at that time. This claim echoes with another analysis conducted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security which suggested that China suppressed information so it could hoard medical supplies from around the world.

The CIA report, following a German intelligence assessment published by Der Spiegel earlier, was the second report from a Western intelligence service that suggested China tried to delay the WHO’s declaration of coronavirus as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

The WHO eventually made the announcement on Jan 30 and emphasized that China was not at fault. The WHO dismissed the notion that Xi himself intervened but declined to address specifically whether Chinese officials were involved in suppressing information.

China dismissed such allegations but has been widely criticized for its initial handling of the coronavirus which as of mid-May has infected more than 4 million people. The country’s death tolls and infection rates are viewed skeptically in the West.

Dawn of Asian century puts pressure on EU to choose sides, says top diplomat

There has been growing discussion in Europe on how to weave a path between China and the US with the seeming end of a US-led global system and the arrival of an Asian century.

The EU’s desire to be tougher on China has been held back by revulsion at Trump’s methods, China’s part in helping Europe’s economy recover in 2007-8 and comparisons between Russia and China as communist regimes in which China appeared to have a more positive image.

With the recent pandemic, however, the pressure to choose sides is growing for the European Union, which appears to be shifting to a more independent and aggressive posture towards Beijing. The shift is sped up by Beijing’s assault on the independence of Hong Kong and its refusal to open its markets.

China’s handling of the pandemic has also backfired with European public opinion and a recent poll showed that 71% Germans believed “greater transparency by China would have mitigated the corona epidemic”.

France and Germany have already become more vocal in their criticism of China with the German cabinet approving new laws to prevent foreign takeovers of medical companies. The challenge now is for European politicians to harness this new awareness to resist China without tumbling into Trump’s cold war.

The 'i' in iPhone 11 now stands for India-made: Apple for the first time makes a top-of-the-line model in the country

//Apple has started making its flagship iPhone 11 at the Foxconn plant near Chennai, the first time it’s manufactured a top-of-the-line model in the country, marking a boost for the government’s Make in India initiative.

//Of the three new models Apple launched in September, the iPhone 11 is the biggest seller in India. Supplies of the locally made device have already reached stores.

//The latest move marks the growing localization of Apple’s manufacturing in the country. The move also helps expand Apple’s production base beyond China at a time when Sino-US ties have soured.

//Apple may consider exporting the India-made iPhone 11 and reducing its dependence on China.

When China Met Iran

//China and Iran had come to the verge of signing a 25-year trade and military partnership agreement that promises to bring a huge Chinese presence into Iran’s economic development, in exchange for a regular supply of heavily discounted Iranian oil.

//This potential partnership threatens the United States’s predominant position in the Middle East, the reaction in Iran and China themselves was also hardly ebullient. The deal was referred to as a new Treaty of Turkmenchay by critics of Iran’s beleaguered president while a Chinese government spokesman dodged inquiries. China’s partnership with Iran in recent years which includes buying Iranian oil in small quantities at a steep discount and crowding out Iranian domestic producers with low-cost imports has also been unhelpful in engendering affection.

//China has been quietly expanding its economic, diplomatic, and even military activities in the region in recent years. Beijing motives are straightforward but varied as it seeks to advance its powers and establish itself in the eyes of the world. Chinese leaders are however aware that few of the great powers have emerged unscathed from Middle East adventures with the region’s deep political fissures, which poses a risk for a China that aims to be a friend of everyone.

//Coincidently, the leak of the China-Iran agreement roughly coincided with the biannual China-Arab States Cooperation Forum early this month, which prompted numerous proclamations of Chinese friendship with Iran’s Arab rivals.

//Nonetheless, the China-Iran relationship is still likely to grow closer in the coming years as China tries to project power westward and Iran seeks to insulate itself from the debilitating effects of American power.

//The United States should then, at every step, aim to exacerbate the conundrums each party faces and enlist regional partners.

Those disregarding international order to be abandoned: Wang Yi

(28 Sep) China State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi stated that with widespread unilateralism and bullying occurring at the height of COVID-19, those who believe that having "big fists" permits them to disregard and destroy the international order will eventually be abandoned by the era.

During his speech at a forum, Wang Yi indicated that the international order is facing a huge unprecedented challenge and that all nations should join forces to defend the values of fairness and justice. Any attempt to reinstate hegemonic rule would drag the world back towards "the law of the jungle" and would be doomed to fail.

He also claimed that human society was experiencing a pervasive public health crisis and that the global economy was in the midst of the worst recession since the Great Depression. The great powers should bear significant responsibility in maintaining world peace and development. They must not pursue their own security at the expense of other nations, nor can they deprive them of their right to development with bullying.

He emphasised that China will staunchly adhere to the path of peaceful development and work with other countries to divest from the sophistry of so-called "my country first" [policies].
