#NeverForget : 17 Months On, Hongkongers Continue to Mourn Yellow Raincoat Man, Call for #Save12HKYouths

Photos: https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/26682

20:37 | Admiralty

17 months ago on June 15, 2019, "Yellow Raincoat Man" Marco Leung Ling-kit took his life, by jumping off from the rooftop of a shopping mall, in protest of the extradition bill, which Carrie Lam refused to withdraw despite million-strong protest marches and violent clashes outside the legislature.

On the 17-month mark tonight, citizens returned to the spot where Leung fell and paid respect to him, as they have been doing every month.

Leung's death last June shocked the city, and was remembered as the first martyr who took their own life to protest against the extradition bill, which, sadly, claimed several more lives before Carrie Lam finally withdrew it months later.

His yellow raincoat bears slogans decrying police brutality against protesters and accusing Carrie Lam for "killing Hong Kong". It has become one of the symbols for the anti-ELAB movement. A replica was hung at the memorial site tonight, where citizens placed white flowers and lit candles in his remembrance.

Posters at the scene also called for attention to the 12 pro-democracy Hongkongers who have been captured and are now detained in China without outside contact for nearly 3 months.

Like Yellow Raincoat Man, Hongkongers would not forget the sacrifices they made, nor the pain they endured.

2 Years Since the Fatal Fall of the Yellow Raincoat Man

June 15, 2021 marks two years since the 35-year-old "Yellow Raincoat Man" Marco Leung used his death to protest against extradition to China and warn Hongkongers of the threat of the tyrannical regime.

It was in 2019, on the eve of the second rally called forth by the Civil Human Rights Front (#CHRF), Leung chanted pro-democracy slogans and unfurled banners in protest of the government's undemocratic acts in a shopping mall in Admiralty.

On the day in 2021, Hongkongers of different ages commemorated Leung near the shopping mall, despite the threat of the authorities.

Familiar faces like #GrannyWong and convenor of #StudentPoliticism #WongYatChin were also present among the crowd.

A Sea of Flower to Commemorate Yellow Raincoat Man

2 years ago in 2019, "yellow raincoat man" Marco Leung displayed banners that read "Carrie Lam, Step Down" and "say no to extradition to China" on top of a shoping mall in Admiralty, Hong Kong.

He used his life to call on Hongkongers to wake up and resist the threat of the tyrannical regime.

He fell to his death in the same evening.

The next day, on June 16, 2019, over 2 million Hongkongers took it to the street to voice out their democratic demands and opposition to extradition to China.

Two years on, the situation in Hong Kong has not been improved, but Marco Leung used his life to remind Hongkongers to persist.

On June 15, 2021, hundreds of Hongkongers went to the site to pay tribute to Leung. A sea of flowers was formed.

HK Security Secretary Connects Sympathy to Participation; LIHKG to be probed

In a meeting in Hong Kong's Legislative Council that is dominated by pro-Beijing lawmakers on July 6, 2021, Secretary for Security #ChrisTang referred the 2019 pro-democracy movement to "color revolution" that aimed at subverting the regime. The former police commissioner also urged citizens to condemn and report.

Tang said, "We will make not only the terrorists, but also the supporters and those who attempt to tone it down, live like rats."

On July 1, 2021, a 50-year-old Hong Kong man called #LeungKinFai died after knifing a police officer and stabbing himself reportedly on the chest. In following days, many Hongkongers mourned the man and brought flowers to the site.

The authorities claimed that mourning as well as posting comments about the man's death could breach the #NationalSecurityLaw.

Law professor #JohannesChan at the University of Hong Kong (#HKU) disagreed and pointed out that mourning the deceased out of sympathy is not a criminal act. Chan criticized that the "red line" drawn by the government is "way too unreasonable".

Secretary for Security Chris Tang, however, insisted that sympathy is a form of support and support is a form of participation.

Tang said, "depending on individual cases, we will see whether we have evidence to make arrests and take our prosecutions."

With reference to Prof Chan, Tang said, "I hope this legal scholar can sleep at night. because you might have painted Hong Kong in blood."

In addition, Tang said that the next target is the Internet Forum #LIHKG because it is "filled with illegal information". Tang claimed that authorities will make arrests and force the websites and the users to remove their messages.
