Police terminated the New Year Day Rally (January 1) prematurely and carried out searches in multiple districts. According to a video circulated online, at the junction of Shang Tung Street and Tung Choi Street in Mong Kok, a young man in black was subdued by a number of plainclothes police officers. One of them was in blue and wearing a black mask, who shouted loudly to the subdued youth, the youth responded "Nothing! I didn't hit anyone." The plainclothes officer walked back to his team. Around 20 seconds later, he fell to the ground, and seemed to have lost consciousness. Friendly Fire: Police Pepper-Sprayed a Masked Undercover Officer Until the Warrant card was Shown

A plainclothes officer wearing facemask was on the receiving end of multiple pepper sprays; he was visibly in pain. His colleagues kept on spraying him even he yelled "I'm one of you".

The riot police stopped spraying him only when he finally showed his warrant card. He was later helped away from the scene by two other officers, who were similarly dressed, with full-face coverings.

Editor's note: Some netizens commented that this is the result of the police displaying warrant cards. They end up shooting themselves in their foot, and they get to experience their very own "minimal and proportionate use of force".

Hong Kong Plainclothed Police to Senior Civilian: ”Holding baton is the same as wearing uniform”

On November 2, 2019, pro-democracy candidates running for the district council election had an assembly, but faced police suppression.

A plainclothed police demanded a 60-year-old civilian at the gate of the Victoria Park for his Identity card. The elderly asked for a proof of the identity of the plainclothed but was refused.

The man was charged of not refusing to present his identity card and smoking in restricted area. The case was heard in Eastern Magistrates' Court on 7 July. The defence explained that the man wanted to confirm the identification of the plainclothed police, before presenting his identity card; however, the plainclothed said his riot-control equipment meant his uniform: “holding the baton is the same as wearing uniform".
