Why did a Dutch cartoonist's work make many people angry?

Cartoonist Maarten Wolterink discovered that whoever attempts to make jokes of the coronavirus would soon touch the nerve of many.

Wolterink received countless calls and hundreds of angry messages on Instagram in one and a half week’s time.

“I drew a flag, its stars were replaced by viruses”, said Wolterink in a radio program, NOS Met het Oog op Morgen. “Although I could not understand these messages (maybe because they were written in Chinese), there were lots of angry face emojis, especially turd and middle finger.” There were around 600 messages of this sort.
Wolterink is not the only cartoonist who incited anger due to cartoons about coronavirus.

Chinese Embassy in Denmark and Belgium have already demanded the newspapers to retrieve the cartoons. Chinese ambassador in the Netherlands even hoped that if there is any offensive cartoon to be published, the Dutch government would take action. He called for the “supervision of their values” on the part of the editor-in-chief.
“These are Chinese style responses”, said Tjeerd Royaards, cartoonist and editor-in-chief of The Cartoon Movement. “We are talking about a country which bans Winnie the Pooh just because it looks like Xi Jinping, the Chinese President. I hope the Dutch government would not respond to the demands of the Chinese Embassy. It is in fact a very strict censorship.”

To the cartoonists, verbal threats or even death threats are nothing new to them. “In fact, it happens whenever a cartoon makes a fuss,” said Royaards.

In those angry messages Wolterink received, there were abbreviations in Chinese, which means "your mother is dead:. “In the beginning, I would happily reply that my mother has indeed passed away 30 years ago, how did you know that? However, after replying to 400 messages, I am fed up.”, said Wolterink. “I am glad that I have deleted my address on Google Maps. Moreover, China is very far away from the Netherlands. I don’t think this is a serious threat.”

“I am not saying my boss will call me tomorrow and tell me not to do so,” said Royaards. “However, this might happen in the future due to China’s intolerance on different opinions. Overall, the freedom of the press is in decline. Besides, as the power of China is growing, what would happen after five, or ten, or twenty years?”

Reflections from the virus crisis: Should the world take "cost" as the sole consideration for manufacturing?

(7 Apr) Many country relies heavily on manufacturing in China. When a crisis arises, huge demand of products is created. Country with enormous manufacturing capability has the power to make decisions.

Crisis creates opportunity. I believe that after this time, the world will hold a different view!

After the Netherlands and Spain, the medical-grade masks shipped by Austrian Airlines at the end of March are completely unusable.

After a review, the Ministry of Economic Affairs stated that the masks provided to South Tyrolean did not meet FFP standards. At present, the Austrian army has taken over the logistics of these masks.

Following the criticisms of the Netherlands and Spain on the poor quality of the protective equipment produced in China, South Tyrolean is also experiencing the same situation. The Ministry of Economy confirmed in Vienna that the large number of FFP2 and FFP3 masks that will be shipped to South Tyrolean are not usable. Initially, these masks were ordered from China through a sporting goods company and shipped by a private plane of Austrian Airlines.

In addition to the masks, 400,000 sets of protective clothing were transported to the Vienna International Airport. When the Red Cross carried out a visual inspection of masks at the airport, they were shocked. Later when the Ministry of Economy sent the items to the German laboratory for examination, the results showed that they did not meet the FFP standards.

Austrian Minister of Economy Margarete Schramböck (ÖVP) also criticized publicly at a press conference that nine out of ten medical masks provided by international suppliers were unusable.
Fortunately, a consortium of Vorarlberger has invested in the manufacture of masks. If there are enough tailors, they will be able to produce 500,000 masks per day. This is not an unachievable target. Up to now, there are 1,700 tailors. You just have to find 700 more.

Huawei allegedly spies on Dutch telecom users including political figures, arose Dutch regulators investigation

Netherland's media De Volkskrant obtained a confidential document alleges that Huawei had access to monitor the calls of users of KPN, the largest telecommunications network in the Netherlands, 10 years ago. The Guardian reported that the confidential report, made for KPN by the Capgemini consultancy firm in 2010, concluded that Huawei could have been monitoring the calls of approximately 6.5 million users without KPN’s knowledge, including politicians such as former prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende and Chinese dissidents. Both KPN and Huawei deny the allegations. The Dutch telecommunications regulator announced on Monday (19 April) that it will investigate the incident.

According to the report, Huawei staff in the Netherlands and China could have monitored calls made by Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, local dignitaries, and Chinese dissidents. "The continued existence of KPN Mobile is in serious danger because permits may be revoked or the government and businesses may give up their confidence in KPN if it becomes known that the Chinese government can eavesdrop on KPN mobile numbers and shut down the network", de Volkskrant quotes the report.

Directed by Hong Kong director #KiwiChow, the documentary “Revolution of our Times” chronicled the months-long pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong in 2019 and 2020 following the Government’s attempt to promulgate the extradition law.

The documentary offered an up-close and personal account of what happened on the protest frontlines.

First debuted in a surprise screeening in Cannes Film Festiv in July 2021, the controversial film soon found resonance in Taiwan’s Golden Horse Film Festival and Japan’s Filmex in subsequent months.

On November 10, 2021, the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam 2021 (#IDFA) also announced the screening of #RevolutionOfOurTimes under the Festival's Best of Fests selection.

A Hongkonger residing in #Netherlands told reporter that many audiences sobbed as they watched the film and the rustling sound of tissue paper could be heard throughout the screening.

He carried on saying that at the end of second screening, audiences applauded incessantly for nearly half a minute to show their respect. Many of them are indeed locals.

Some audiences even chanted protest slogan, “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Time” as the film ends.

The documentary is also set for its first public screening in New York City from December 10 to 18, with more screenings in other US cities to be announced.
