Teen's TikTok video about China's Muslim camps goes viral

Editor’s note:
(26Nov) US teenager Ms Aziz’s TikTok video clips accusing China of putting Muslims into "concentration camps" have gone viral with the first one generating 1.4 million views on the Chinese-owned social network. As a result, she tweeted that TikTok had blocked her from posting new content. Tiktok disputed this stating it “does not moderate content due to political sensitivities". Tiktok clips can be viewed on its Chinese and international platforms. Ms Aziz’s clips are still allowed to remain on the international platform but the attention generated is nowhere close. The 17-year-old's videos were posted the same week BBC Panorama revealed how leaked documents detailed some of the measures used to brainwash hundreds of thousands of Muslims in the western region of Xinjiang. China's UK ambassador has dismissed the documents as "fake news".

#China ramps up campaign to redefine '#HumanRights'

Western nations have condemned China's human rights record, including a security crackdown that has detained an estimated one million mostly Muslim minorities in re-education camps in northwest Xinjiang region.

China is responding with an increasingly strong counter-narrative, which emphasizes security and economic development over civil and political freedoms. Beijing's global push seeks "to counter criticisms on its failure to respect international human rights standards", Amnesty International researcher Patrick Poon told AFP. English-language state broadcaster CGTN last week released a documentary series on deadly attacks blamed on religious extremists and separatists to defend China's policies in Xinjiang. The footage includes graphic images of a car ramming into a crowd at Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 2013 and a mass knife attack at a train station in Kunming in southwest China that left 31 dead in 2014. "Uighurs are discontented because they don't have the proper economic opportunities," Hong Kong-based political analyst Willy Lam told AFP. "The main purpose (of the crackdown) is the suppression of the political aspirations of the Uighurs, but they are trying to put an economic spin on this," he added. 23 nations backed a British statement at the UN condemning China's human rights record in Xinjiang. 23 nations backed a British statement at the UN condemning China's human rights record in Xinjiang. But China's allies countered with an explanation of their own that won even broader support.

BBC Chinese released a 30-min YouTube video looking into the document leaked and the life inside the "Education Camp"

"They are high-security prison camps.
"They change the way people behave, what they believe, even the language they speak." But the Chinese ambassador in UK, Liu Xiao-ming, denied the accusations. Saying all the documents found by BBC were fake and made up the story.

Disputes about mask donation between China and Japan

The story that Japan donated a million masks was a piece of fake news orchestrated by Chengdu!

Japanese media interviewed the distributor itoyokado, who publicly said they sent the masks because they received an order from Chengdu, but no one mentioned it was a donation!

Video Shows the Horror of China's So-Called "Education Camp" in Uyghur

Released on Oct 10, 2020, the video shows a frail Uyghur man 'returning' from what the Chinese Communist Party government called "education camp".

The man was in a condition that he cannot walk on his own and had to be carried by another person. The health of the man is equally worrying.

The original Tweet about the video compares the traumatic scene to Holocaust caused by the #Nazi:

//This is the condition of a #Uyghur man who was lucky enough, unlike millions of others, to be released from #China's brutal #concentrationcamps in Occupied #EastTurkistan. What China is doing in East Turkistan is a 21st Century #Holocaust.//

Chinese State-Owned Surveillance Company #Dahua is Targeting #Uyghurs

Netizens discovered a source code package from China's Dahua Technology, one of China's largest makers of surveillance equipment, which shows that the company has made provisions to specifically identify Uyghurs with their cameras.

The state-owned enterprise has already been under US sanctions for its links to China's human rights abuses of Uyghurs in its Xinjiang province, and this discovery indicates that the company's technology is actively targeting the minority group, despite their previous denials.

Part of the discovered package, known as a software development kit (#SDK), includes descriptions of the results from Dahua's face recognition software. These descriptions include a field for ethnicity types; however, it only differentiates between Uyghur and non-Uyghur ("other").

Curiously, although ethnic Han Chinese comprises over 90% of China's population, the software makes no mention of the group, nor any other of the 56 ethnicities officially recognized by the ChinesecCommunist Party government.

Other details of the facial descriptions are also disturbing:

Aside from describing obvious characteristics (male/female, mask/no mask, etc), there is a field for "attractiveness", a score ranging from 1 to 100. "The higher the score, the more attractive the person," reads the comment attached to the field.

Another section of the SDK shows that these descriptions can be tied to the person's name, birthdate, home address, and even their emotions displayed on their face: smile, anger, disgust, and so on. There is even an emotion value for "screaming".

The fact that their surveillance software is so specifically designed to target Uyghurs - and no other ethnic group - strongly suggests that Dahua is making a conscious effort to support the Chinese Communist Party regime's suppression of the minority group.

Coupled with extensive profiling capabilities that the code hints at, one cannot ignore what Orwellian horrors this technology might enable China to implement - if it hasn't already done so in Xinjiang.

The Dahua SDK can be found on Github:
https://github.com/gaomingbo/dahua-netsdk/

The source code indicative question is in the file/com/dahua/lib/NetSDKLib.java

Uighurs forced to eat pork as China expands Xinjiang pig farms

Sayragul Sautbay, who was detained in a re-education camp in China’s westernmost region of Xinjiang, still suffers from nightmares and flashbacks from the “humiliation and violence” she endured.

"Every Friday, we were forced to eat pork meat,” Sautbay said. “They have intentionally chosen a day that is holy for the Muslims. And if you reject it, you would get a harsh punishment.”

She added that the policy was designed to inflict shame and guilt on the Muslim detainees and that it was “difficult to explain in words” the emotions she had every time she ate the meat.

China Misuses Photo of US Prisoners to Attack International #Boycott over #XinjiangCotton

China’s state media and Chinese netizens have been attacking multiple global fashion brands, which have decided to stop buying cotton from Xinjiang after concerns over reportedly forced labour in the industry.

In a press meeting on Mar 25, 2021, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Hua Chunying, displayed a photo showing what she claimed to be “forced labour in America picking cotton”.

It was later discovered that the workers in the photo, taken at a cotton field in Texas in 1968, were prisoners. The intention of the shot, however, seemed to be more about concerns on the correctional system and racial discrimination in the US than “forced labour” as described by Hua.

#AmnestyInternational: #China has "created a dystopian hellscape on a staggering scale" in #Xinjiang

//“The Chinese authorities have created a dystopian hellscape on a staggering scale in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region,” said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General.

“Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other Muslim minorities face crimes against humanity and other serious human rights violations that threaten to erase their religious and cultural identities."

“It should shock the conscience of humanity that massive numbers of people have been subjected to brainwashing, torture and other degrading treatment in internment camps, while millions more live in fear amid a vast surveillance apparatus.”

From the moment they entered the prison-like internment camps, detainees’ lives were extraordinarily regimented. They had no privacy or autonomy, and they faced harsh punishments – sometimes collectively with their cellmates – for trivial disobedience. Internees were forbidden to speak freely to each other, and they were severely punished when they responded to prison guards or other officials in their native tongues instead of Mandarin. Every activity in the detainees’ daily routine was pre-ordained and their behaviour was constantly monitored and evaluated....

Every former detainee Amnesty International interviewed suffered torture or other ill-treatment.

This included the cumulative psychological effect of their daily dehumanization, as well as physical torture in the form of beatings, electric shocks, solitary confinement, deprivation of food, water and sleep, exposure to extreme cold, and the abusive use of restraints, including torture tools like tiger chairs. Some reported being restrained in a tiger chair for 24 hours or more...

The Chinese government has gone to extraordinary lengths to cover up its violations of international human rights law in Xinjiang. Authorities threaten, detain and mistreat anyone who speaks out...//

Czech Terezín Memorial Exhibits Portraits of Hong Kong #PoliticalPrisoners

A painting installation by Hong Kong artist #LorettaLau depicting some Hong Kong political prisoners will open on 7 October 2021 in Terezín Memorial, a former #NAZI concentration camp in the #CzechRepublic.

Lau was invited to take part in Fortress 1980 exhibition and human rights conference. Titled ‘The Cells’, the paintings are installed in solitary confinement cells, a stark reminder of ‘the nature of the dictators has never changed,’ said Lau.

'The Cells' features 13 political prisoners under the Hong Kong National Security Law, including Jimmy Lai Chi-ying, Tonyee Chow Hang-tung, Tony Chung Hon-lam, Agnes Chow Ting, and more.

A faint portrait of each prisoner is painted on a piece of white door curtain installed at the entrance to a solitary confinement cell.

To have a clear view of the portraits, visitors must walk into the cells. Looking from inside out, the images will be lit up by the light outside.

The design aims to arouse the visitor’s empathy with those imprisoned. ‘I hope by having them walking into the cells, they will have a direct and personal experience of how being confined feels like,’ said Loretta.

*Note: The artist Loretta Lauwill stage a live performance at Terezín Memorial at 5pm Thursday Oct 7 (HKT 2300). She will use her movements and voices to commemorate the countless people who suffered in the concentration camps, to resonate between the tragedies in the past and the happening misfortunes.

The performance will be streamed live at: https://youtu.be/IZ6b-KPctOk

'Some are just
#psychopaths': Chinese detective in exile reveals extent of torture against #Uyghurs

//The ex-detective turned #whistleblower asked to be identified only as Jiang, to protect his family members who remain in China.

In a three-hour interview with CNN, conducted in Europe where he is now in exile, Jiang revealed rare details on what he described as a systematic campaign of torture against ethnic Uyghurs in the region's detention camp system, claims China has denied for years.

"Kick them, beat them (until they're) bruised and swollen," Jiang said, recalling how he and his colleagues used to interrogate detainees in police detention centers. "Until they kneel on the floor crying."

The methods included shackling people to a metal or wooden "tiger chair" -- chairs designed to immobilize suspects -- hanging people from the ceiling, sexual violence, electrocutions, and waterboarding. Inmates were often forced to stay awake for days, and denied food and water, he said.

"Everyone uses different methods. Some even use a wrecking bar, or iron chains with locks," Jiang said. "Police would step on the suspect's face and tell him to confess."

The suspects were accused of terror offenses, said Jiang, but he believes that "none" of the hundreds of prisoners he was involved in arresting had committed a crime. "They are ordinary people," he said.//

//...During the routine overnight operations, Jiang said they would be given lists of names of people to round up, as part of orders to meet official quotas on the numbers of Uyghurs to detain.

"It's all planned, and it has a system," Jiang said. "Everyone needs to hit a target."

If anyone resisted arrest, the police officers would "hold the gun against his head and say do not move. If you move, you will be killed."

He said teams of police officers would also search people's houses and download the data from their computers and phones.

Another tactic was to use the area's neighborhood committee to call the local population together for a meeting with the village chief, before detaining them en masse.

Describing the time as a "combat period," Jiang said officials treated Xinjiang like a war zone, and police officers were told that Uyghurs were enemies of the state.

He said it was common knowledge among police officers that 900,000 Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities were detained in the region in a single year.

Jiang said if he had resisted the process, he would have been arrested, too.

Inside the police detention centers, the main goal was to extract a confession from detainees, with sexual torture being one of the tactics, Jiang said.

"If you want people to confess, you use the electric baton with two sharp tips on top," Jiang said. "We would tie two electrical wires on the tips and set the wires on their genitals while the person is tied up."

He admitted he often had to play "bad cop" during interrogations but said he avoided the worst of the violence, unlike some of his colleagues.

"Some people see this as a job, some are just psychopaths," he said.

One "very common measure" of torture and dehumanization was for guards to order prisoners to rape and abuse the new male inmates, Jiang said.//

Leaked list reveals details of over 10,000 #Uyghurs detained in China’s #Xinjiang province

//Researchers estimate over one million Uyghurs and other mostly Muslim minorities are being held in a secretive network of detention centres and prisons, ostensibly as part of an anti-terrorism campaign after a series of attacks.

Yet information on the crackdown in Xinjiang region -- and those who have been ensnared by it -- is closely guarded by China's Communist authorities.
