Sapientia - Exhibition of the protests (Part 2)
Memorial Lightbox
The lightbox was part of a series that resembles glowing gravestones. Some of the lightboxes commemorate the lives that were sacrificed in the movement, showing their last words and death date while other lightboxes act as a symbolic cemetery for the core values of Hong Kong that have eroded since the National Security Law was enacted. These lightboxes were seen at the vigil on the first anniversary of Marco Leungās death. Leung fell from a metal scaffolding outside Pacific Place on 15 June 2019 when he was protesting in his yellow raincoat and displaying a banner with five demands.
āWe have to continually be jumped off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down.ā

Receipt from a Yellow Shop
People find many ways to disseminate political messages. One of the creative means was found in these receipts where protest slogans were printed by shops that sympathise with protesters. Thsee receipts displayed were found at a bubble tea shop where customers wrote down messages on the back of their receipts and put them up the shopās Lennon Wall. The difference between earlier and newer receipts reveals how the slogans and emotions of citizens evolved in the movement, from āHongkongers, go for itā to āHongkongers, resistā and āHongKongers, fight back".

Letter by a jailed protester
This is a letter written by Chan Yi-Chun, a 19-year-old student imprisoned for attacking a police officer with a selfie stick to help trapped protesters escape from the police. Chan was seen wearing a shirt printed with Chinese character āå²³ā (Cantonese: ngok6; Mandarin: Yue). Thus, some protest supporters compared his acts with the ancient folk hero Yue Fei, who was known to be brave, loyal and fearless. In the letter to Chanās girlfriend, Chan expresses his desire to be free again and encourages HongKongers not to give up amidst the enforcement of the National Security Law. One can be forced to keep silent, but one's mind cannot be changed.

Censored graduation photo
The hand gesture with an open palm and one finger raised is often used amongst protesters, symbolizing the slogan āfive demand, not one lessā. In this photo, a group of secondary students showed the āfive-one gestureā while taking their graduation photos to commemorate the year where two events affecting their future occur together: their graduation and their cityās pro-democracy movement. The group photo turned out to be edited' with the āfive-one gesturesā artificially replaced by a āfour-two gestureā. The photography company claimed the censorship was instructed by the school, which was previously said to be more tolerant in allowing studentsā expression of political views.

This copy of Apple Daily along with a handwritten letter was found at āYin Tsz Roadā in Tseung Kwan O, a memorial dedicated to two deceased student protesters, Christy Chan and Alex Chow. The items were brought by a local resident to the memorial, tried to tell the two deceased about the sanctions of the US against 11 top officials of China and Hong Kong, who have been associated with the implementation of the National Security Law and oppressing the protest movement. The writer also told Christy and Alex that they will always be remembered.

A Mask of Xi Jinping
This cut out mask was used at a human chain demonstration against the amendments to the Extradition Bill and the Anti-mask Law. Wearing the mask is one of the creative responses to protest against the Anti-mask Law. While protesters urged for the āfive demandsā, Chief Executive Carrie Lam invoked the colonial-era Emergency Regulations Ordinance in October 2019 to ban the wearing of masks at assemblies. It is common amongst protesters to wear face coverings as it helps protesters to filter out tear gas shot by the police and to remain anonymous in this leaderless, faceless movement.
The Anti-mask Law, created to stop the protests, resulted in more intense social unrest afterwards.

Democracy Wall Becomes Lennon Wall During the Commemoration of Battle of CUHK
A year after the police's attempt to siege the university campus, the students' union of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) held a retrospective exhibition on the campus.
The venue was crowded as many visitors came. As people stuck memos on the "democracy wall" of the students' union, it became a Lennon wall.

"Local Youth Will" is a pro-democracy concern group recently established by former cabinet member of the now-dissolved students' union of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK), Law Tsz Wai; external affairs vice-president of the current students' union of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU), Cheung Sum-yee; and former spokeperson of #StudentPoliticism, Chu Wai-ying.
The group organized their inaugural event on June 9, 2021. On the day two years ago, over 1 million Hongkongers took it to the street to protest against the government's plan to implement extration to China.
In the exhibition they are organizing in 2021, Local Youth Will aims to give voices to the detained, jailed and exiled pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong.
At a gallery called Parallel Space located in Shum Shui Po, photos, banners and art installations relating to the pro-democracy movement are displayed.
The group hopes that the memories of the #AntiELAB movement can be passed on, despite the authorities' incessant attempts to alter history.

However, just one day after the event has started, the authorities intervened by sending 6 to 7 officers from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (#FEHD) to the venue. Despite that the exhibition is held as a private event that requires advanced booking, the authorities claimed that the group lacks the "license" for "places of public entertainment".

Second Anniversary of Pro-democracy #HumanChain in Hong Kong; Commemorative Exhibitions Open in Estonia and Luthuania
Two years ago on August 23, 2019, around 210,000 pro-democracy Hongkongers formed a 60km human chain across the city, going through different districts and even up on Lion Rock. In addition to voice pro-democractic demands, the event also commemorated the 30th anniversary of the #BalticWay, where a 675km human chain was formed by over 2 million people across three countries occupied by Russia, namely, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. One year after the human chain event to raise international concern, Russia acknowledged the independent status of the three countries.
In 2021, a Hongkonger residing in Estonia, Iverson Ng, curated a photo exhibition titled "1989 Baltics - 2019 Hong Kong". The exhibiting partners include the Institute of Historical Memory in Estonis, the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights in Lithuania and the Museum of the Occupation (#MOL) in Latvia. The exhibition opened on August 23, 2021, marking the second anniversary of the Hong Kong Way and the 32nd anniversary of the Baltic Way.
However, the Museum of the Occupation (MOL) of Latvia suddenly pulled out just one week prior to the opening. The vice director of the museum, Taiga KokneviÄa, wrote to Ng on August 17, 2022, saying that "it is not a moment to discuss other issues in the museum".
Despite this, the museum director Solvita VÄ«ba has earlier promoted the exhibition when speaking to the local media LSM. In the interview, VÄ«ba praised the perseverance and solidarity of pro-democracy Hongkongers and pointed out the support for Hongkongers from the country's Minister of Foreign Affairrs, Edgars RinkÄviÄs.
Since the vice premier Artis Pabriks tweeted the news in his twitter, Ng does not think the government has put any pressure on the museum. The real cause of the withdrawal remains unclear.
In any case, the Estonian section of the exhibition is available online: https://chainsoffreedom.communistcrimes.org/

#HKCTU 30th Anniversary Exhibition: "Renewing Our Minds with Each Step in the Fight"
Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (#HKCTU) hosted "30th Anniversary of HKCTU Exhibition" on Sept 25, 2021, telling their stories with fellow Hongkongers in these 30 years.
At this instance, when we are deciding our next steps, we can see lots of āleavingā, and we are unsure about the date of reunion.
Knowing that āleavingā and āgatheringā is a cycle, originally gathering us from different places, and now scattering again. However, expanding our networks at different locations on this land can lead us to gather again.
In 1989, 2003, 2014 and 2019, the HKCTU marked down every step walking with Hongkongers so that we can review every historic record.

Czech TerezĆn Memorial Exhibits Portraits of Hong Kong #PoliticalPrisoners
A painting installation by Hong Kong artist #LorettaLau depicting some Hong Kong political prisoners will open on 7 October 2021 in TerezĆn Memorial, a former #NAZI concentration camp in the #CzechRepublic.
Lau was invited to take part in Fortress 1980 exhibition and human rights conference. Titled āThe Cellsā, the paintings are installed in solitary confinement cells, a stark reminder of āthe nature of the dictators has never changed,ā said Lau.
'The Cells' features 13 political prisoners under the Hong Kong National Security Law, including Jimmy Lai Chi-ying, Tonyee Chow Hang-tung, Tony Chung Hon-lam, Agnes Chow Ting, and more.
A faint portrait of each prisoner is painted on a piece of white door curtain installed at the entrance to a solitary confinement cell.
To have a clear view of the portraits, visitors must walk into the cells. Looking from inside out, the images will be lit up by the light outside.
The design aims to arouse the visitorās empathy with those imprisoned. āI hope by having them walking into the cells, they will have a direct and personal experience of how being confined feels like,ā said Loretta.
*Note: The artist Loretta Lauwill stage a live performance at TerezĆn Memorial at 5pm Thursday Oct 7 (HKT 2300). She will use her movements and voices to commemorate the countless people who suffered in the concentration camps, to resonate between the tragedies in the past and the happening misfortunes.
