St. Paul’s Convent School Includes “National Security Law” in 5-hour Ethics Studies Class; Students Worries It to Be Channel for Propaganda

After enacting the National Security Law, Chief Executive Carrie Lam and Secretary of Education Bureau Yeung Yun-hung have stated clearly to launch NSL education in schools. Stand News stated that St. Paul’s Convent School, a school under the direct subsidy scheme in Causeway Bay have scheduled 4 lessons for the NSL under Ethnic Studies for F5 and F6 students in the new school term for this year. NSL classes are scheduled to be in March next year tentatively. Details of this course is scarce at the moment. Some students revealed that the school has always emphasised “not bringing politics back to the campus”, when they have taken the lead to introduce NSL in the course. Students worry it will be a channel to deliver political messages favourable to the government.

Stand News has sent an inquiry to St. Paul Convert School about reasons for adding the “NSL” topic into Ethnic Studies and content of studying materials. The school haven’t replied as of press time.

St. Paul Convert School is a traditional elite girl school. Alumni include Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Edwina Lau Chi Wai and Barrister Margret Ng Anglo-yee. During the anti-ELAB movement last year, the school suppressed a student’s strike, which included barring the wearing of white ribbons and masks, and forcing students to throw away all anti-ELAB movement and student’s strike-related leaflets before coming back to the campus. At that moment, the school described a student’s strike as “intensifying the tension in the society”. Many alumni were discontented with the decision, causing more than a hundred alumni and students stood silently outside the campus for protest.
