Prague city council moves to axe partnership with Beijing after it failed to remove an article requiring it commit to the "one China" principle.
Czech-Chinese relations were already strained last year by the Czech cyber-security watchdog warning against the risks of using equipment made by China's Huawei and ZTE in critical infrastructure, and trips of several Czech musical groups to China being cancelled by the Chinese authorities. Furthermore, the Chinese Embassy in Prague said last month that the clashes were caused by the Czech side.

After #Prague unilaterally ended its sister-city agreement with Beijing, the Chinese Embassy in Prague threatened the Prague city council with a statement.
"The city council of Prague must change its approach, accommodate current trends and progress in history. We urge the city to return to the correct path which promotes the development of bilateral relations. Otherwise, they will damage their own interests."
Prague Mayor Zdenek Hrib's Czech Pirate Party responded with a snide statement on their facebook page, saying "We know the Chinese regime likes to view its partners as vassals and does not like disobedience. However, we are a country of free people, with a democratic Constitution. We refuse to bow down to a authoritarian regime responsible for 're-education camps',plus participating in human trafficking and illegal trading of organs. Lastly, we would like to conclude with a picture that will be censored by the Chinese communist government."
A picture comparing Chinese President Xi-Jinping with Winnie the Pooh was attached with the statement.

[Prague and Beijing 1/2]
China suffered a rare diplomatic discomfiture earlier this week.
Zdeněk Hřib from the Pirate Caucus, Prague’s newly-installed mayor, broached changes to the “one-China” clause in the sister city treaty with Chinese diplomats in March, arguing that #Prague should not be entangled in China’s territorial disputes and that his city must uphold human rights and universal values when furthering relations with China.
“Thirty years after the Velvet Revolution, we must remind ourselves that conscience is not for sale,” tweeted Michaela Krausova, head of the Pirate Caucus at the Prague City Council. The Facebook of the Pirate Caucus also blamed China kept bullying Prague with open threats and ended the thread by a meme of Xi and Winnie-the-Pooh. The Chinese leader is often caricatured for his passing resemblance to the teddy bear, although any such comparison is strictly banned in China.
The sister-city agreement was signed by Prague's previous municipal authorities led by then mayor Adriana Krnacova in 2016 ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the Prague.
But after the upstart Pirate party took over the Prague mayorship in November 2018, Prague has publicly supported freedom in Taiwan and Tibet.

Taiwan gets ally as Prague mayor cuts Beijing ties

[Prague and Beijing 2/2]
Prague's new municipal authorities voted this week to pull out of the twinning agreement with Beijing, “respect the One-China Policy and acknowledge Taiwan as an inseparable part of Chinese territory”, to protest the provision that had been adopted by their predecessors.
Prague said Beijing demanded it respect the policy on Taiwan as a precondition for lending a panda to Prague Zoo. The panda never arrived.
Beijing also quit the twinning deal. "Beijing Municipality terminates its sister-city relationship with the City of Prague with immediate effect and suspends all official exchanges," Beijing city hall said in a statement posted on the website of China's embassy in Prague on Thursday.
Angered by Prague's efforts to revoke the controversial clause earlier this year, Beijing in June cancelled a tour by the Prague Philharmonic scheduled for September and August.
Czech Foreign Minister Tomas Petricek, a strong supporter of warm ties with both China and Russia, told reporters on Wednesday that "threats have no place in diplomacy", adding however that the Czech government respects the One-China policy regardless of Prague's position.
He invited Xi Jinping to #Prague in 2016 and announced Chinese investment worth 95 billion koruna (US$4 billion) in that year alone, which has so far largely failed to materialise.

Prague, Taipei ink sister deal in snub to Beijing
(14-Jan) Prague mayor Zdenek Hrib canceled a twinning agreement with Beijing in October and hailed a new partnership with Taipei on 13th Jan (Monday) because of "shared democratic values, respect for fundamental human rights and cultural freedoms" between the two cities. Hrib condemned China as an "unreliable partner" in an interview. He also stated that China was "full of resentment", which, in his opinion, #Czech should not sign an agreement with a country against the independence of #Tibet and Taiwan.
Beijing considers Taiwan as part of its territory; the sister deal between Prague and Taipei might be a deterioration of the Czech-Chinese relations. On the other hand, the Czech President Milos Zeman wants closer ties with China and bow to China on many fronts.
