Another case of indiscriminate arrests: 17-year-old protester acquitted in trial
On 2 November last year, netizens called a rally against extradition bill in Victoria Park. A 19-year-old male student was arrested and charged for traffic obstruction with a traffic cone. He pleaded not guilty in a trial on Wednesday (June 17). Police officers who were in charged of the case made several amendments to his statement in the court, including allegations that the black-clad protester hurled traffic cones onto westbound line of Leighton Road, causing traffic obstruction. However, after viewing video footages recorded on that day, he admitted that the traffic was not obstructing the traffic.
Not only that the officer failed to recognize the defendant in the court, he also agreed with the defending lawyer’s that his observation on the day was inaccurate. The prosecution subsequently ended up with a decision to not provide further evidences, and the Magistrate ruled the case not substantiated.

Families Apart: Daughter Separated From Mother Due to Indiscriminate Arrest
Today is the National Day and the Mid Autumn Festival. The police were heavily presented in Causeway Bay, with repeated actions stopping-and-frisking as well as arresting lots of patrons and passers-by. The parent of one of the arrestees, Miss Cheung, said she was shopping and preparing to eat dinner in Causeway Bay with her daughter and her friend, when the police suddenly set up cordon stopping and searching them. However, only she was released.
She was both confused and infuriated. “We just wanted to buy some books and eat out as it was Mid Autumn Festival. But then they rounded us like catching fish with a net,” she said in distress. “They did everything—checking your ID card, taking you pictures, everything.”
“Then they asked me to wait outside.” However, Miss Cheung didn’t see her 38-year-old daughter and her friend coming out with her. She stressed they didn’t do anything, not even chanting slogans. “The books we bought today are still in the bag!”
She found the incident baffling. “Isn’t this indiscriminate arresting?” She is now in great distress. She tried to approach the police, asking where her daughter and her friend will go, but they simply replied she will have to wait. “You will not be able to find her even in the police station!”
