83-year-old Li Yi: I don’t have long to live, but I believe Hong Kong young people have wisdom beyond imagination 1/6

Li Yi is 83 years old. According to him, he takes several medicines a day, for diabetes, for whatever ... and sleeping pills. He often said that he couldn't sleep well since he was young, but he still wrote five newspaper columns a week and did "one-minute reading" for RTHK. Li Yi reads all kinds of news online, and he is no less enthusiastic than younger people. There is a Thai helper who cooks and serves him. Other than that, his home is only a house full of books.

Li Yi's family is all in foreign countries and his late wife was buried in Canada, but he is still struggling in Hong Kong alone. Li Yi said that at this stage, he probably should be with family and write his own autobiography. "Of course I can still write if I leave Hong Kong." However, Li Yi cannot not let go of Hong Kong and leave. He states that ever since Hong Kong’s future problems in 1981, he has been "love Hong Kong" and since then "the feelings for China have been very weak."

Hong Kong fares “slightly better” in coronavirus battle due to pro-democracy protests

While Japan and South Korea are stricken by the epidemic, Hong Kong's situation is, touch wood, not as bad. Surprisingly, we are doing better than Singapore, especially in light of the gross incompetence and deliberate acts of bad faith by Carrie Lam's administration. This is not due to "good luck", but cause and effect.

1. As mentioned many times, the Anti-ELAB movement has greatly reduced the influx of mainland Chinese tourists in the past six months. Despite Lam's refusal to close the border completely, the number of mainland Chinese tourists has dropped drastically towards the end of last year. We no longer saw frenzied shopping in preparation for the Lunar New Year. Even Sheung Shui, a district best known for its parallel traders*, was "liberated". One can imagine, if this year is like last year, Hong Kong's affliction was inevitable. (Some speculated that because Chinese tourists were turned away from Hong Kong to other places, the virus was spread to other countries instead.)

//people have no expectations towards any measures she proposes, choosing instead to think hard on self-help.

//Hongkongers have undoubtedly learnt our lesson. The government and the Hospital Authority are the only ones who learned nothing.

Hong Kong Microbiologist: HK Government should avoid a repeat of the 2003 Sars crisis

//Dr. Pak-leung Ho, the head of the University of Hong Kong's Centre For Infection has warned that the SAR must introduce a basket of measures to force people to keep their distance from each other – and by this weekend – or the city's public health system could collapse.

...He said that more than 10,000 doctors and nurses overseas have been infected with Covid-19 and at least 40 doctors have died.

Ho added that Hong Kong should not make the same mistakes some foreign countries have made and he is worried that the city will soon see a repeat of the 2003 Sars crisis.//

The Hong Kong government may make use of the pretext of fighting virus to enforce Martial Law, Doctor Alfred WONG Yam Hong: tyranny and virus never relax

[Independent Media Report] Under the second wave of epidemic of Wuhan Coronavirus, professions warned that the Hong Kong medical system may collapse in a week’s time. Spokesman of the Citizens’ Press Conference worries the government will introduce Martial Law to suppress the anti-tyranny movement, by virtue of the justification for fighting virus, and in fact it is a good pretext to be used. Doctor Alfred WONG Yam Hong, physician of Tuen Mun Hospital and member of Médecins Inspirés, appeals Hong Kong people to minimize staying outdoor and uphold personal hygiene to avoid intensifying the epidemic. “Tyranny and virus have never relaxed, not even a single moment”, said Doctor WONG.

//Hong Kong people need to do their best to fight against the epidemic to avoid community outbreak, otherwise the government will make use of this to impose the Martial Law – this will definitely be an endless trouble.”

//“all my hopes are on Hong Kong people, but not any on the government.”

//Under the current trend, the number of confirmed cases would hit 1,000 in 5 days, substantially overloading the negative pressure wards.

Returning to Heping Hospital, Ward B8: “Her answer signalled her choice”

17 years ago, the SARS epidemic led to the deaths of many citizens and healthcare workers in Taiwan. The Heping Hospital in Taipei was quarantined and locked down. In the fight against an epidemic under the most dire circumstances, how was the balance maintained between personal choices, defending humanitarian needs and the duties of healthcare workers?

In Memory of Dr. Joanna Tse Who Sacrificed Herself to Save SARS Patients 17 Years Ago

The SARS outbreak in 2003 took the lives of eight medical workers in Hong Kong. Also a type of coronavirus, SARS was first carried to Hong Kong by a man from China in February. The SARS disease, with a much higher mortality rate than COVID 19, had traumatized the population in Hong Kong.

On 13 May 2003, Dr Joanna Tse Yuen-man, a pulmonologist at Tuen Mun Hospital, passed away at 35 after volunteering to treat SARS patients.

The other 7 medical workers who passed away were:

- Dr Cheng Ha-yan (Tai Po Hosital)
- Dr Cheung Sik-hin (Private Otolaryngology Doctor)
- Lau Kam-yung (Health Assistant, United Christian Hospital)
- Dr Lau Tai Kwan (Private Paediatrics Doctor)
- Lau Wing-kai (Nurse, Thoracic Medical Department, Tuen Mun Hospital)
- Tang Heung-mei (Health Assistant, United Christian Hospital)
- Wong Kang-tai (Health Assistant, The Prince of Wales Hospital)

17 years later, another type of coronavirus by the name of COVID 19 returned to haunt Hongkongers. In early February, medical workers had initiated a 5-day-strike to urge the government to close the border. They had also did their best in saving those infected with the virus. Without their contribution, Hong Kong would not have been successful in containing the virus.

Let us salute the medical workers who, despite many difficulties and the chance of getting infected themselves, held our line of defense. Zero medical workers have contracted the disease and may it stay that way.

We salute to all medical workers of the world.

British media: China deletes 300 studies from Wuhan Institute of Virology, including all research By “bat expert” Shi Zhengli

British media The Mail on Sunday found that many important materials related to the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China published by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) are no longer available online, and are suspected to have been removed by the authority, causing a new round of controversy over suspected concealment of the epidemic by the Chinese government.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology is suspected to be the source of the virus, and hundreds of pages of information have been deleted, including the research conducted by the Wuhan Institute of Virology and research data of Shi Zhengli, director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology Research Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases. The 56-year-old Shi Zhengli, known as “batwoman”, who often collecting samples for research from bat caves, is regarded as a key figure who knows the source of the virus. The report pointed out that more than 300 studies published by NSFC, including those on animal-to-human diseases, were no longer available. Dozens of studies that were available online were deleted by the state-run institution, including research by Shi Zhengli.

According to the report, studies related to the risk of spreading the SARS-like coronavirus from bats and investigation into human pathogens carried by bats have disappeared, both of which are regards as importing clues to the source of the virus. It revealed China's attempted to hinder the investigation into the source of the virus. Iain Duncan Smith, a Former Leader of the British Conservative Party and member of Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, pointed out that China is trying to hide the evidences, “It is vital that there is a thorough investigation into what happened but China seems to be doing all it can to stop that happening,” he said.

Confidential document says Beijing refuses to fund local CDC, bureaucracy causes collapse of the medical system and loss of epidemic prevention and fighting function

The initial outbreak of Wuhan COVID-19 in China has spread globally. The leaked documents received by CNN not only reflect China's mishandling of the epidemic but also reveal that China's health care system has been riddled with problems for a prolonged period of time and that when the epidemic escalated, officials and medical personnel generally took it lightly, further contributing to the global outbreak of the virus.

After SARS in 2003, the Chinese authorities spent 167 million USD (about 1.3 billion HKD) to set up a notification system. Theoretically, the system allows regional hospitals or disease prevention centres to directly report outbreaks to the central government and share relevant information with the entire country. However, according to a report in the paper, the system itself slowed down, and other bureaucratic constraints have further impeded information flow.

Compared to major cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai, Wuhan's medical system received relatively few resources. An audit report completed last October pointed out that Hubei Province's disease prevention centre was underfunded. The lack of proper testing equipment and motivated medical staff, especially in the early stages of the outbreak when they still used SARS-era equipment, was completely neglected by the Chinese Bureaucracy.

Leaked Chinese document reveals a sinister plan to ‘unleash’ coronaviruses

A document written by Chinese scientists and Chinese public health officials in 2015 discussed the weaponisation of SARS coronavirus, reveals the Weekend Australian.

Titled The Unnatural Origin of SARS and New Species of Man-Made Viruses as Genetic Bioweapons, the paper predicted that World War Three would be fought with biological weapons.

Released five years before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, it describes SARS coronaviruses as a “new era of genetic weapons” that can be “artificially manipulated into an emerging human disease virus, then weaponised and unleashed in a way never seen before”.
