5 Universities in Hong Kong Crackdown on Students' Unions

In the past year, multiple students' unions in Hong Kong have been targeted and oppressed by the university management for their pro-democracy stance.

On July 15, 2021, the Hong Kong Lingnan University announced thst they would no longer collect the member fees on behalf of the Students' Union. This makes the 5th Students Union being targeted in Hong Kong universities-- after CityU, CUHK, HKU and PolyU.

After the HKUSU committee passed the proposal to mourn Leung Kin Fai's death, the university was critized heavily by Carrie Lam and other pro-establishment parties. The university responded immediately by reprimanding the SU and claimed that they would no longer acknowledge the SU, and demanded the SU to leave the building before July 21st. On the 11th of July, the university took down all the posters in the building, democratic wall and notice boards.

CUHK also stated that their SU made false claims about the university and urge the SU to take legal responsibility for their actions. The SU stepped down after only being elected for one day.

No cults, no politics, no ghouls: how China censors the video game world

In the years after it was founded in 1999, the Swedish video game company Paradox Interactive quietly built a reputation for developing some of the best, and most hardcore, strategy games on the market. “Deep, endless, complex, unyielding games,” is how Shams Jorjani, the company’s chief business development officer, describes Paradox’s offerings. Most of its biggest hits, such as the middle ages-themed Crusader Kings, or Sengoku, in which you play as a 16th-century Japanese noble, were loosely based on history.

Self-censorship hits Hong Kong book fair in wake of national security law

Booksellers at Hong Kong’s annual book fair are offering a reduced selection of books deemed politically sensitive, as they try to avoid violating a sweeping national security law imposed on the city last year.

The fair was postponed twice last year because of the coronavirus pandemic. It usually draws hundreds of thousands of people looking for everything from the latest bestsellers to works by political figures.

This year, far fewer politically sensitive books are on display. Vendors are curating their books carefully to avoid violating the national security law, which Beijing imposed on Hong Kong in June 2020. Authorities have used it to crack down on dissent, arresting more than 100 pro-democracy supporters in the region.

Germany calls on China to allow further investigations into COVID origins

German Health Minister Jens Spahn called on China to make it possible for investigations into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic to continue, saying more information was needed.

Speaking during a visit to the World Health Organization headquarters in Geneva on Thursday, Spahn also announced a 260 million euro ($307 million) donation to WHO's ACT-Accelerator programme, which aims to ensure the entire world, including poorer countries, receive coronavirus vaccines and tests.

"I call on China to make it possible for the investigations into the origins of COVID to be continued," he said.

7 young activists sentenced to 10 months in jail in Hong Kong after serving in Chinese prison

The #12HongKongers who intended to abscond to #Taiwan reportedly in August 2020 were arrested and detained by PRC's marine police for secretly crossing the border.

Up til July 2022, 2 of these 12 Hongkongers are still being detained in China while 9 were charged for #ObstructionofJustice when they returned to Hong Kong after serving their sentence in China.

Amonh them, Wong Wai-Yin were charged with the #CrimeofExplosives instead of Obstruction of Justice. Hoang Lam Phuc and the others have pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 10 months in jail at the District Court in Hong Kong on July 15, 2022.

Li Chi-yin, who is serving 3.5 years in prison, was added 7 months in jail.

Temporary judge Wong Hing-Wai Newman claimed that their behaviour shows their ignorance and intention to challenge to Hong Kong judicial system.

The judge describes the case as the "first in history" that the Department of Justice charges people who do not return to detention on time for Obstruction of Justice. He says it is a pity to sentence these young defendants after reading their petition letters, but "rules are rules".
