Control and Tightening Control: HK Government's Latest Responses to the Pandemic

The Hong Kong SAR government refused to grant HKD1.5m to a community cleanliness campaign approved by Southern District Council for anti-pandemic purpose.

This is not the first time where the government refused to operate with the directly-elected district councillors, of which the pro-democracy camp constitutes the majority in all 18 District Councils in Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, the government claimed the need to "tighten anti-pandemic control". The Health Authority required travellers arriving in Hong Kong to undergo quarantine in hotels, i.e. home quarantine is not allowed. The regulation, however, exempts travellers arriving from China.

China’s “recolonization” of Hong Kong could soon be complete

The Chinese Communist party (CCP) has made clear it has no intention of honouring the international treaty its signed with the UK in 1984, which promised a high degree of autonomy to Hong Kong for at least 50 years. The most important aspect of this affront to the former colonists is what it tells us about the kind of power a rising CCP intends to be in the world.

The sweeping changes in the territory indicate that President Xi Jinping really does believe China is engaged in a bitter ideological struggle with the “extremely malicious”, “western” ideas of liberalism and democracy.

Pompeo: US to Have Economic Dialogue with Taiwan, Supply Chain and 5G Security on Agenda

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has announced that his deputy Keith Krach, who had visited Taiwan in September, was hosting an economic conversation with Taiwan on Friday, 20 November. Items on the agenda included supply chain and 5G network security. Pompeo said the dialogue, which marks the “strong and growing” economic relationship between Taiwan and the US, will help enhance their corporation in such aspects as health and safety, supply chain security and clean 5G networks. He added that Taiwan is a “vibrant democracy” and “reliable partner”.

According to Pompeo, the dialogue would be hosted by the American Institute in Taiwan and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States.

As the pandemic continues, Taiwan representatives in Washington said the conversation would have both face-to-face and online components. Physical meetings would be held in Washington and joined by a delegation led by Chen Chern-Chyi, Vice Minister of Economic Affairs. The other officials involved would join the conversation by means of video calls. The dialogue was expected to last for one day.

Terry Glavin: When will Canada join the rest of the democratic join the rest of the democratic world in standing up to China?

After 18-months of massive anti-regime protests, the way of ending democracy in Hong Kong was four lawmakers were disqualified by Beijing and remaining pro-democracy legislative council members have resigned en masses. It’s not just about Hong Kong. It’s about Xinjiang and China’s takeover of key United Nations agencies, its abusive manipulations of the World Trade Organization, and its “hostage diplomacy” in one country after another.

Justin Trudeau’s government can’t follow the allies of “Five-Eyes” to ban Huawei in the core 5G internet connectivity technology. Canada lacks a foreign-agents registration law.

It remains to be seen whether Canada will join the consensus, or remain on outlier.

For the First Time, Canada Acknowledges China’s Operation Fox Hunt Causes Threat, Urges Nationals to Report Cases

Following the US, the Canadian government has also acknowledged that China’s Operation Fox Hunt had been causing threats, pointing out that China targeted at individuals in the Chinese-Canadian Community through plainclothes national security personnel or “trusted agents”. The Canadian authority criticised this action as threatening to national security and Canada’s sovereignty and the safety of its people, and urged victims to report their cases.

In response to The Globe and Mail’s inquiry on China’s Operation Fox Hunt, John Townsend, the spokesperson of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, said that some countries, including China, routinely sent plainclothes national security personnel or “trusted agents” to other countries to make threats, silence dissidents or suppress political opponents, instilling fear in other countries. He said, “These activities constitute a threat to Canada’s sovereignty and to the safety of Canadians.”

Townsend refused to reveal the number of Canadians targeted by Operation Fox Hunt, but urged Chinese Canadians and local Chinese nationals to report any cases of threats or intimidations by China, “These individuals, for various reasons, may not have the means to protect themselves or do not know they can report these activities to Canadian authorities. The fear of state-backed or state-linked retribution targeting both them and their loved ones, in Canada and abroad, can force individuals to submit to foreign interference.”

The US, Japan and Other Allies of Taiwan Give Speech at WHA in Support of Taiwan

The World Health Assembly (WHA) has held its online conference earlier this week. The US previously urged the WHA to invite Taiwan to participate as an observer, but the appeal was rejected by the World Health Organization (WHO). Nonetheless, the US, Japan, and a number of countries with diplomatic ties with Taiwan spoke up for Taiwan during their speeches at the conference. The Central News Agency (from Taiwan) reported that during the speeches that supported Taiwan, the assembly stopped the live broadcasting twice, citing the reason that they were irrelevant to the agenda.

During the conference, Garrett Grigsby, Director of the Office of Global Affairs in the US Department of Health and Human Services, expressed that Taiwan has made impressive achievements in combatting the COVID pandemic. He said that it would be beneficial to the response to the pandemic if WHO members could understand and take reference from Taiwan’s experience. Instead, WHO’s blocking of Taiwan from participating in the conference as an observer was counterproductive. Grigsby emphasised that while each country worked to strengthen its capacity under the pandemic, countries should also share information about the pandemic and develop a transparent global architecture to detect threats early and prevent the further spreading of the virus.

The court concluded that the 31-year-old Ma, had chanted slogans and displayed signage advocating for Hong Kong independence during the protests in 2020.

Judge Stanley Chan described it as a "serious" case, and used six years’ imprisonment as the starting point for Ma’s punishment. The court revealed that in a letter Ma wrote for his case, he said he did not regret for what he had said.

MPs calling it a "moral obligation" to extend UK’s settlement route for Hong Kong youngsters

//An amendment to the Nationality and Borders Bill, tabled by Conservative MP Damian Green and supported by Tom Tugendhat and 11 other Tory MPs, would enable Hong Kongers with at least one parent who is a BNO citizen to apply for a UK visa.

It comes after The Independent revealed last month that Young Hong Kongers who fled police brutality are “languishing” in the UK asylum system because they are not able to benefit from the British National Overseas (BNO) scheme due to their age.

If the amendment were accepted, it would enable those born after 1997 to resettle in Britain on the basis of the BNO status of one or both of their parents, rather than having to travel with them.

Many of these young people may well have been involved in the protests and therefore some of them have already suffered from the new security law, and others may in the future

Home Office figures show there was an almost 500 per cent increase in asylum claims from Hong Kong nationals in the year to June 2021, rising to 124 from 21 the previous year. Fourteen of these were unaccompanied minors – the first time on record that the UK has received asylum claims from children from the city state. //

[2 Years after CUHK Conflict] Graduates Commemorate the Event, Mourn Over Humanity Spirit Disappearing

By Translated by Guardians of Hong Kong, November 14, 2021 • 8 January 2022

In the previous night, the hilly campus in Ma Liu Shui was filled with clouds of black smoke. Even from Ma On Shan on the other side of the harbour, one could see a “mushroom cloud” lingering midair. The surrounding highways and roads were packed with long queues of vehicles. Red lights blazed throughout Tolo Highway and Tai Po Road. Hundreds of “CU folks” had to leave their stuck vehicles. They rushed towards their campus on foot, carrying bottled water, bags of food, helmets and facemasks. The alumni said ”we need to defend CU”, breathing heavily.

Hong Kong's Captain America 2.0: Not Ashamed, No Regret, No Cowardice in Pursuing Democracy and Justice

Translated by the Guardians of Hong Kong

MA Chun-man, aka Captain America 2.0, is convicted by the court on November 2021, guilty of “inciting others to secede” and sentenced to five years and nine months imprisonment.

CHAN Kwong-chi, the designated judge, pointed out that the defendant repeatedly incited others to secede, in the mean time disparaged the #NationalSecurityLaw (#NSL). Chan deems that this case is a “serious offence” as articulated in the law.

Ma wrote his own letter of intercession and emphasized that he does not feel ashamed and has no regrets…
