District Council Members-Elect Urge HongKongers to Never Forget and Help Change Our Society for the Better

On Decenber 21 outside the Lai Chi Kok detention center, at least 6000 citizens gathered to show support for the detainees. In the ongoing pro-democracy movement, over 6000 people have been arrested by the police.

During the rally, a district council member-elect spoke of the bullet that fired into the chest of a youngster in her district Tsuen Wan on October 1st.  She mentioned that no Hongkonger would ever forget this gunshot:

ā€œPolitical liquidation is beginning to creep into our lives, but letā€™s not forget that we also have a score to settle with this regime!  July 21, no police anywhere!  August 31, beaten to death!  October 1, murdered by gunshot!  We shall pursue until all police officers were accounted for their brutality!  This is the best way to support our arrested brothers and sisters!  Hongkongers, we shall never forget!ā€

Letter to Hong Kongers: Review of the 5.1 Golden week

Dear Hong Kongers:

What did 5.1 Golden Week means to you in the past? A week of nationwide discounts? A week of crowded street full of Mandarin speaking people and their suitcases?

I hope that "Hongkonger's 5.1 Golden Week" is turning into a day marked with faith and unity.

Patronizing 'Yellow shops' (shops that support the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong) and forming a "Yellow Economic Circle", rather than going to a 'Blue shop' (shops that are pro-police and pro-government) is seen as a way for people to support the protest movement using peaceful means since. There are some mobile apps that guide consumers to yellow businesses across the city. You will also be able to spot a yellow shop by banners or stickers at the entrance of their shops.

Some of them do not just shiebtheur support with their ideals. They provide free meal for pro-democracy protesters who are in need, and they also donate money to such Non-profit organisation that provide aid and assistance to protesters in need of financial assistance.

However, since the outbreak of Covid-19, the government placed a ban on gatherings of more than four people. This has affected small businesses the most. Restaurants are required to operate at half their capacity and set tables at least 1.5 meters (5 feet) apart, leading to a large number of restaurants not being able to sustain their businesses through this trying period.

With these problems at hand, Hong Kongers came up with an online campaign called "Hongkonger's 5.1 Golden Week", rallying the people to visit and patronize yellow shops and businesses over the long May Day weekend.

Hong Kong anti-government protesters queued outside shops and businesses that openly support the democracy movement on Friday, as a gesture of solidarity and support for "Yellow Economic Circle".

As a result, the Central Government Liaison Office of HKSAR condemned the people for ignoring the rules of the free market, calling it a political abduction of the economy. What that's mean?

This goes to show one thing, that the power of "Yellow Economic Circle" is strong enough to pit pressure on the government. Their condemnation only reveals their fear. It goes to show the effectiveness of the "Yellow Economic Circle".

"We might not be able to come out and protest every day due to the pandemic, but supporting yellow shops in our daily life is something everyone can do - it's a way of making a difference even in our daily life," said Ma, one of supporters of Hongkonger's 5.1 Golden week.

Hong Kongers have in fact been finding creative ways to fight for their freedom, using platforms such as the Nintendo Switch game, Animal Crossing, where they decorate their islands with pro-democracy banners.

In the recent months and years, we can clearly see that Beijing is long it's patience, and it is tightening it's grip on our freedom. In addition, our protests and gatherings were interrupted due to the pandemic and unreasonable restrictions that came as a result of it.

Despite all these challenges, we will never forget the people who came out on the streets and made sacrifices for Hong Kong's future.

The success of Hong Kong's 5.1 Golden Week is a direct stand against the crackdown on the pro-democracy movement in April, where a few prominent pro-democracy figures were suddenly arrested.

These actions have not discouraged us. In fact, it added fuel to the fire of persistence. Hong Kongers will fight until they are liberated.

From
A very persistent Hong Konger

Letters from Hong Kong Protester in Exile in Taiwan

Image: https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/20724

Dear Hongkongers,

Sorryā€¦ I should have charged and withdrawn together with everyone as promised, but turns out I left everyone behind. It has been a while since I first came here, though I still canā€™t get used to this life. I miss Hong Kong so much and living alone in Taiwan has been torturous as I feel guilty about all this.

I thought I was a very tough person but I found out I am not. When I walk around here, I always notice places that remind of Hong Kong. I left my home, betrayed brothers, sisters and family who are still fighting in Hong Kong, leaving all of you to face everything in your own. Compared to what you guys have to go through, the problems I have to deal with seem small.

Some day, we will liberate Hong Kong together and meet outside the Legislative Council building again.

* * * * * * * * *

I never thought that I could contact so many brothers and sisters in Taiwan who could help us. We are the relatively blessed few. We donā€™t know whether we can ever return to Hong Kong. I hope that the pandemic wonā€™t take a further toll on Hong Kong. Brothers and sisters in Hong Kong, please take care!

* * * * * * * * *

Time flies by so quickly. Life for us here is a never-ending waitā€¦waiting for the school year to start. There are still many months ahead. I wish the lock down will be over soon and the pandemic will ease. Do not forget to liberate Hong Kong! We depend on you!

From your comrades in Taiwan

An Open Letter From Hongkongers to the Free World Circulating on the Internet

"To our friends of the free world,

You should have known from the news that freedom and the rule of law of Hong Kong has being severely marred by the Chinese government. The ā€˜One Country, Two Systemā€™, which China pledged to remain unchanged for 50 years, has now been declared bankrupt in less than half of the time (23years). The fact speaks for itself. Xi Jinpingā€™s government is a dishonest and ambitious regime. Controlling HK is but its first stepping stone, with it they will export the China Model. Strengthening its grip on international society is its ultimate goal.

At the outbreak of COVID-19, the Xi government intentionally covered up information on the plague, which in turn put citizens of globe under direct threat of the pandemic, plunged national economies into recession. Not only did Xi Jinping shrugged off their responsibility of covering up the epidemic, he grabbed the opportunity to conduct ā€˜diplomacy of generosityā€™, making use of his economic advantages to bride other countries. His goal is not to take up responsibility as a great nation, but to deepen other nationsā€™ economic dependency on China, in order to control local government and citizens.

Numerous experts in politics have warned many times, while other countries are troubled by the pandemic, China start ā€˜War Wolf Diplomacyā€™, expanding its military and economic power, making itself a hegemony of the world. We believe more and more countries have observed Chinaā€™s imperialist intent. So-called ā€˜peaceful riseā€™ is purely a lie. It is only for superficial friendship and interests, there have not yet been sanctions against China. However, once Hong Kong has fallen, China will be more arrogant, and its ambition closer to achieve. The free world will be under unprecedented threat.

As an international centre, HK is the prime place for RMB financing. The import and export of Chinese capitals, companies going public, largely rely on HK. Once China put the centre under arbitrary and rude control, its ambition - exporting ideology and controlling other economies through ā€˜economic violenceā€™ - will be readily realized.

To stop Xiā€™s next step, we urge other countries to make cautious prevention. HK is the first fortress standing on the frontier of the world that values freedom and democracy. HK people aspire to freedom and democracy. We has fought for 23 years. China government, not only has it never honoured its promise to realize democracy in HK, it now is going to take away the remaining freedom and just laws with force, with brutal violence towards HK citizens and kids.

The threat from China is blatantly obvious. HK people are not to be slaves, because we believe in the values of freedom and democracy, like all citizens of the free world. The free world should connect and fight alongside HK people. To defend the value of HK is to defend the value of the free world.

Today, facing brutal violence of the authoritarian state, in front of bullets, HK people still go to streets to show our will. Our courage stems from our firm belief in freedom and democracy. HK people need help from the free world. We will not surrender, because, like you, we believe in the ultimate triumph of freedom and democracy."

A Hope That From Now On There Will Only Be One Campā”€ā”€ā€˜Reclaimistsā€™

Editor's Note:
The term
ꔬē‚’ (ā€˜laam2 caau2ā€™) means mutual destruction. Originating from the words for ā€˜stir frying food togetherā€™, the term first held meanings of ā€˜if we burn, you burn with us.ā€™ However, this implies the passivity on the protestorsā€™ part, when in reality, Hongkongers are attempting to change the political system by actively organizing, advocating, boycotting and fundraising etc. For simplicity, ꔬē‚’ shall be referred to as ā€˜laam caauā€™, but please bear in mind the implied meaning of the term is still evolving.

A Hope That From Now On There Will Only Be One Campā”€ā”€ā€˜Reclaimistsā€™

Part 1: https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/21454

Greetings everyone, I am ā€˜I demand laam caauā€™, colloquially referred to as ā€˜Laam Caau Brotherā€™. The last time I made a public statement was during Chater Garden rally on the 16 August 2019. Iā€™ve recently heard that a million-dollar bounty has been issued for my death, causing me to contemplate writing a will.

2019 was the first time millions of Hongkongers risked their blood, sweat, livelihoods, futures and lives to ā€˜laam caaoā€™ with totalitarianism. University campuses were besieged and bombarded by artillery and countless protestors sacrificed themselves. The number of martyrs killed or forced into exile is beyond count.

However, we successfully blocked the passage of the extradition bill. We revived the slogan ā€˜Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our timesā€™ā”€ā”€ a legacy of Edward Leung. We composed our national anthem ā€˜Glory to Hong Kongā€™. We formed international alliances. We reclaimed the District Council.

//Hongkongersā€™ ultimate goal isn't to safeguard the corpse of the rule of law. In order to liberate Hong Kong, we must start from scratch and reconstruct a new rule of law that truly represents this city. The reason America is the country it is today is, 200 years ago, a group of lawyers and citizens realized the rule of law was corrupted.

//Hongkongers face an enemy much stronger than the Soviet Union. On the proverbial road to liberation, not one of these three componentsā”€ā”€the streets, the legislature, and the international frontā”€ā”€can be neglected.

//Elected members of the district councils and LegCo are representatives of public opinion. These are identities that hold influential power in the international community. To reclaim Hong Kong, you must evolve: taking the initiative instead of being timid and overcautious. Even if disqualification results, your words and actions continue to have weight.

//Hongkongers, it is time to launch a three-pronged attack in the legislature, the streets, and the international front. A good offense is the best defense.

//I must reiterate that 'laam caao' emerged because the CCP stripped Hongkongers of their livelihood, freedom, culture and democracy. This method was the weaker side's reaction to being backed into the corner by a great power.

//"Laam caao" is not ā€˜burnismā€™. Rather, it is ā€˜phoenixismā€™: the crucial stage for the rebirth of a phoenix. Hongkongers, we no longer have the capacity to compromise with the CCP.

//We would rather become floating ashes than sinking dust.

//If we burn, you burn with us.

Letter from a fellow female protester

Please read carefully and take her words seriously.

The author of the letter below has safely fled to another country.

Special thanks to our sister for reminding Hongkongers to stay angry against the corrupted cops. We keep hearing this kind of sexual abuse time after time!

The content of the letter is as follows. [Note: younger protestors sometimes call older protesters ā€œparentsā€]

Dear Parents and the Hong Kong Book of Freedom,

I am so sorry. Even after you have paid my tuition fees, I still decided to flee. As I was arrested by the police at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) during the protest on 1 October 2019, I now have no choice but to leave. My dear parents, I am so sorry to have wasted your well-intended efforts and kindness. I will pay it back after settling down in my new surroundings. But I want to mention one last thing. While I was under police custody, several police officers touched my breasts and even brazenly commented about how ā€œit felt greatā€. This took place at a car park about 10 minutesā€™ walk from the location I was arrested in Tsuen Wan. My head was covered in a black cloth at the time and I dared not make any sound. I am sorry. While I am reluctant to mention it again, I believe there are more victims. I hope other Hongkongers can avenge for me. May glory be to Hong Kong.

ā€œLiber___ Hong Kong. The revolu___ of our timeā€

No Torture, No Forced Labour, No Hunger, No Beatings: Suspicious Letters From Hongkongers Detained in China

On November 19, 2020, familes of some of the 12 pro-democracy Hongkongers detained in China received "letters" from their close ones. This was the first time ever since August 23, 2020 that the familes "heard" from the disappeared Hongkongers. For nearly 90 days, the captured Hongkongers were not trialed but detained in China and visits by the lawyers hired by their families were denied by the Chinese authorities.

However, the handwritten letters have similar content, simplified Chinese characters which are not in use in Hong Kong and expression which are not usually used by Hongkongers.

The following is taken from a RTHK report:

//The Save 12 HK Youths Concern Group says letters received by seven of the families all stress that the detainees are well and that they should not worry, with some stating that they have not been beaten, forced to work, or confess under torture.

"I didn't get beaten up by people, my cellmates all have a very harmonious relationship. I eat well and sleep well ... I will return after shouldering my responsibility," says a letter purported to be from one of the detainees which was made public by the group.

ā€¦family members recognise the handwriting in the letters, but find the content to be very suspicious, as if it was written in accordance with some kind of template.

"There are a number of suspicions regarding the wording, including the use of simplified Chinese characters and some Chinese writing styles that more closely resemble those used in mainland China than in Hong Kong. In particular the descriptions of life in the detention centre are largely similar," the concern group says in a statement.

It adds that the families doubt the detainees wrote the letters of their own free will, noting that mainland prisoners involved in human rights cases in the past have been forced to write letters to their families with the content dictated by the authorities.//

Hong Kong Pro-democracy Activist #GwynethHo: Donā€™t let ā€œsufferingā€ retaliate the movement

The following is an excerpt of a #letter written by former journalist and currently detained activist Gwyneth Ho:

"It is human nature to be afraid of prison, but we should not think of imprisonment as a form of suffering imposed by the government to activists, where activistsā€™ freedom is being completely restricted in a passive state.

If we interpret 'suffering' as a passive state, the 'sufferers' will become the 'victims'.

We should not see the experience of suffering as failure or an end to the movement. Otherwise, it will retaliate and wear us down. I hope everyone keeps in mind that the years 2019, 2020 and 2021 go hand in hand and cannot be considered individually. To suffer or the acknowledgement of the risk of suffering has always been a part of the political movement. As long as the state of 'suffering' is not over, our movement goes on."

[Editor's note:

The following is a letter written by Owen Au Cheuk-hei, the former president of the Students' Union of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK). The letter was submitted to the Kowloon City Magistrates' Court in Hong Kong on May18, 2021, where the 22-year-old Au was trialed for "participating in an unauthorized assembly", "possessing weapons" and "obstructing justice" among other charges in a pro-democracy protest on October 20, 2019.

On the same day in court, Au has been convicted and the court will deliver his sentence on June 2, 2021.]

"That year, the feeling of hopelessness led to a wave of student suicides. One youth after another became overwhelmed by the feeling of darkness as they could not see their future, and ended their brief lives.

One of my best friends was among them; he departed suddenly, without leaving a word behind. After that, I spent countless days and nights curled up on my bed, watching countless sunrises and sunsets outside my window, berating myself for being unable to prevent the tragedy from happening.

It was then that I began to doubt the phrase 'determining my own destiny'. No matter how my self-determined spirit struggles, it could not slow down the fall and corruption of this land by even a little bit.

So I began to think that, in this cruel society, self-determination was probably only an absurd joke.

I was caught up in all these depressing emotions when I came to find Buddhism. I reached a relevation one day, and understood that all things came from dependent arising, and are emptiness by nature; whether times are good or bad, nothing is permanent, and nothing lasts forever.

From this, I learned to put aside my own preconceptions, and let go of my own honor and disgrace. I no longer worry whether every effort I paid would be rewarded. I only concern myself with whether what I think and do are improving myself, those around me, and the world I live in. The past cannot be changed; the present is bound by the past; but the future is determined by our choices today.

Even though much of the world is beyond our control, even beyond our knowledge, we can still strive for the future we want by our actions from moment to moment. Perhaps this is what 'determining my own destiny' really meant. This is how, through faith, I found the strength to carry on living, and the courage to meet my own future destiny."

Continue with Part 2:

"...As stated in my case, I was arrested during a protest on Oct 20, 2019, which was 576 days ago.

During this period of time, nearly ten thousand citizens had come under arrest due to the movement or other political reasons. More and more people are forced to leave Hong Kong, with no chance in sight for their return.

This development is surely the opposite of the outcome that many had hoped for: 'determining our own destiny', or democratic self-governance.

After my arrest, a police officer asked me mockingly: What did I feel I've achieved by taking to the streets?

Thinking back now, over these 576 days, it certainly seemed like I've achieved nothing, except losing more and more fellow students and friends. Undoubtedly, this caused me more pain than the court case now being brought against me.

However, different from the overwhelming feeling of powerlessness in the years past, today I do not feel hopeless at all, and have not given up on my belief in 'determining our own destiny'.

These 576 days had been long and full of changes. There had been trauma and pain, but at the same time, I see hope. Because I know that, outside of the courts and prisons, out of sight of others, many people are still striving quietly for Hong Kong, taking up the fight in place those who have fallen.

Local business owners absorb losses to make their Hong Kong brands shine; artists and creative minds are working day and night to reclaim the city's coveted reputation of 'number one in Asia'.

These Hongkongers are full of life and dreams, and I can feel the immeasurable bravery and wisdom in them. Before such great people, I feel humble, and have no more excuses to wallow in self-pity.

They make me firmly believe that this city is not fated to spiral downward forever; this city will create infinite possibilities for the future."

"...Nobel Prize laureate Albert Camus used to say, 'Each generation doubtless feels called upon to reform the world. Mine knows that it will not reform it, but its task is perhaps even greater. It consists in preventing the world from destroying itself.'

Due to historical reasons, our generation has no choice but to be born into a Hong Kong where political rights and the room for free speech are dwindling day by day.

Two summers ago, we chose to fight back against the fate that was forced upon us, demonstrating to the world our determination to take hold of our own destiny. Now is the time that we take up the responsibility for our choice.

The world is changing, perhaps for better, or perhaps it is crumbling. But no matter what awaits us in the future, I believe that our generation is one who determines our own destiny:

we all hold fast to our own duties in our own ways, striving to create a new, beautiful era that we can truly call our own."

#AlbertHo Receives Letter from Grandson: "Come Home Soon and We Love You"

Albert Ho, vice-chairman of Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, with 9 other members of the Democratic Party were accused of organising and knowingly taking part in an unauthorized assembly and other charges on October 1, 2019.

All 10 pro-democracy figures pleaded guilty before the hearing. They were then remanded and the sentencing was set to be announced on May 28, 2021.

Hoā€™s former assistant and currently Tuen Mun District Councillor, Beatrice Chu, posted on her Facebook page that Ho was unwell when she visited him.

Ho said that he has been lacking sleep because he was put in an individual cell that was poorly ventilated.

On May 23, 2021, Chu posted an update on her page that Ho had been moved to a cell with better ventilation, but he still had poor appetite and looked depressed.

She mentioned that Hoā€™s grandchild wrote a letter to cheer up Ho on May 22, 2021. His grandson said he missed Ho much and that he understood Hoā€™s life in the cell is ā€œbored and hot, but you have to stay strong! We all love you!"

Ho's grandson also told Ho that he would take good care of Grandma and not to worry.

#Letter from Jailed Activist #FigoChan: "As long as we keep our faith, we can advance through adversity together"

Figo Chan, League of Social Democrats committee member and vice-convener of Civil Human Rights Front, was handed a heavy sentence of 18 months for organising a march on Oct 1 2019, which the police deemed an unlawful assembly.

Before his sentence was announced, Chan wrote an open letter to Hong Kongers to thank them for giving their all to fight for democracy, freedom, human rights and justice.

He also said that, although Hong Kongers have a tough road ahead, ā€œdonā€™t forget, the seeds we've sown will certainly lead to a harvest in the future."

In the letter he wrote on May 22, 2021, Chan thanked Hong Kongers for their effort that raised worldwide attention to the Anti-ELAB movement and forced the government to withdraw the act. He felt ā€œproud and touchedā€.

He also mentioned, although more and more activists are sentenced to prison for violating the National Anthem Ordinance and the National Security Law, Hong Kongers should persist in their belief.

ā€œThe road to democracy is very long. As long as we keep our faith, we can advance through adversity together. One day, we will meet again under the pot (Legislature Council Complex)."

Now that Civil Human Rights Front (#CHRF) is facing the risk of being banned by the government, Chan said that although he is being imprisoned, ā€œI still insist that CHRF will not disband until the end. I also hope everyone will still keep fighting for Hong Kong, and speak up on June 4, July 1, etc on behalf of the arrested, exiled, in the name of freedomā€.

In closing, he wrote: ā€œThere is hope as long as we are still here. Five demands, not one less! May glory be to Hong Kong.ā€
