China Detains At Least 10 Hongkongers Reportedly Fleeing to Taiwan

The China Coast Guard announced on their Weibo on August 26, 2020. At 9 o'clock on August 23, 2020 (no indication of morning or afternoon), the China Coast Guard intercepted a cross-border vessel outside Hong Kong’s southeastern waters (21°54'00''N, 114°53'00''E) and captured at least ten people who were "suspected of illegally crossing the border" including "someone named Li" and "someone named Tang".

According to Stand News and Radio Free Asia, there were 12 young Hongkongers on board heading to Taiwan at the time. "Someone named Li" referred to by the China Coast Guard is Andy Yu-hin Li, who had recently be charged with national security violations. All of them had participated in the pro-democracy protests. Some are currently on bail awaiting trial after being arrested in Hong Kong.

These Hong Kong youth are now being detained by the China Coast Guard and the Chinese police are "investigating".

According to the Criminal Law in China, the Public Security Bureau can file a case against stowaways with criminal responsibility. The stowaways will be sentenced to imprisonment of up to one year before being deported to Hong Kong.

Among the Hong Kong youth detained, Andy Li is a member of "Hong Kong Story", a group that promotes the responsibility of election inspectors. On August 10, 2020, he was arrested by the National Security Service of the Hong Kong Police Force. On the same day, Apple Daily’s founder Jimmy Lai, his two sons and Next Media's senior management were also arrested. They all had their travelling documents confiscated by the authorities.

Detainee's Family Questions Handwritten Letter “Calling off Their Actions” Sent From China

It has been nearly 100 days since the 12 pro-democracy Hongkongers were detained in China. Recently, some families received handwritten letters from their close ones but suspected that they were copywritten.

In a letter supposedly written by Andy Li, it was mentioned that he has "reflected on his past behaviors" and urged his sister to “call off and stop organizing” the campaign page “Andy is Missing” which she has created to seek help internationally.

The letter goes “I am the bad example, please don’t end up like your brother, or it will be too late to regret it.”

Beatrice Li, Andy's sister, believes that those are not at all the sincere words from her brother. She thinks that her brother is regarded as a big threat, and Chinese authorities are “holding my brother as a hostage to shut me up.”

She emphasized that she would not stop speaking up, and further called on the world to continue to follow the situation of the 12 pro-democracy Hongkongers detained by China and “to let the CCP know they cannot do as they please.”

[Editor's note:
In 2015, the "Causeway Bay Booksellers' Disappearance" shocked the world where China abducted 5 booksellers of different nationals from Hong Kong, Thailand and China.

Among them, Gui Minhai, a Swedish citizen, was believed to be forced to confess for his involvement in a fatal traffic accident more than a decade earlier. He served two years in prison but he was arrested months after his release.

Gui was sentenced by the Chinese court to another 10 years in jail for "illegally providing intelligence overseas".

Over 100 lawmakers around the world condemn HK government's cruel treatment of pro-democracy activists

#AndyLi, one of the 12 Hong Kong pro-democracy activists imprisoned in China, was transferred back to Hong Kong on Mar 22, 2021 after serving his sentence in China; however Li’s family has been unable to reach him for multiple days.

On Apr 2, 2021, the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (#IPAC) issued a statement criticizing the Hong Kong government’s cruel and inhumane treatment towards Li and his family, and called for the release of Li and all pro-democracy activists that are detained unfairly.

Signatories of the statement involve national lawmakers from the UK, US, Canada, Japan, and different European countries, as well as IPAC’s advisors. The statement mentioned that, since Li’s transfer to Hong Kong after serving his 7-month sentence in Shenzhen, Li has been held in a single cell in a psychiatric facility without being able to get in touch with his family. The statement described Li’s treatment as “cruel, inhumane and shocking”.

Li’s case was also described as an “emblematic of the Chinese Government’s ruthless crackdown on Hong Kong’s way of life, and disregard for the international treaties designed to protect it.”. The signatories pledged to make urgent representation to their respective governments, and demanded Hong Kong government to release Li and all activists that are being detained unjustly.

Two more pro-democracy activists plead guilty in National Security Case in Hong Kong

Pro-democracy activist, #AndyLi Yu-hin, one of the 12 Hongkongers detained in China and a member of “Hong Kong Story”, pleaded guilty on August 19, 2021 to "conspiracy to collude with foreign forces", in a national security case linked to media tycoon and #AppleDaily founder #JimmyLai.

Another Hong Kong activist #ChanTszWah also admitted to "colluding" with Lai and others to "ask foreign forces to impose sanctions on Hong Kong or China" between July 2020 and February 2021.

Prosecutors alleged that Li and Chan were "core members of a political campaign led by Lai" which "called for international sanctions by organising rallies, publishing propaganda, and lobbying overseas politicians".

The prosecution claimed that Li and Chan had meetings with political figures from the US, the UK and Japan, including a senator who would run in the next U.S. presidential election. They were also accused of recommending a list of 144 Chinese and Hong Kong officials for international sanctions; and showing US officials 277 rounds of ammo fired by the Hong Kong police.

Andy Li was among the 12 Hong Kong people intercepted by the #CCP's Guangdong coast guard in August 2020 as they allegedly tried to flee Hong Kong by speedboat.
