Teacher Dehumanized Protestors and Cussed in Class; Suspended only for 14 Days
A male teacher from Ma On Shan Tak Sun Secondary School was accused of swearing at his students last month. In the conversation, he also used “cockroach” to describe the protester. The school said that further investigation will be done.
The principal, Law Chun-ping, issued a statement today (January 5) stating that the Incorporated Management Committee (IMC) ordered the teacher to be suspended from his post for 14 days from January 3. He will also receive salary deduction during the suspension period as a penalty.
The statement mentioned that the IMC acknowledged the teacher should not use vulgarities under any circumstances, "It is also inappropriate to use politically and socially biased terminologies and opinions in a classroom."
The school management committee also ruled that the teacher "violated the code of conduct of school staff", and therefore issued a written warning to "seriously instruct" the teacher not to commit the same offence. "His employment will be terminated in the case of a repeated offence."
The statement also said that the teacher agreed with the incident report, and "was willing to accept the penalty," and that he also "expressed remorse" and he promised not to violate the staff code of conduct in the future.
The statement stated that as an educator, "each teacher must maintain integrity and follow strictly the best practices in education." For politically sensitive or controversial social issues, the school asks teachers to exercise their "professional judgement" and consider whether or not it is appropriate for the students’ age, and whether or not it meets the specific curriculum requirements. A balanced and objective approach should always be adopted so that students can learn to express themselves in a rational and objective manner.
