NATO Senior Officer Calls Upon the USA to Repair Relationship Against China's Diplomatic Bullying

Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) calls upon the USA and the European Union to repair the relationship as soon as possible to respond to the “more aggressive” and “threatening” risk.

Stoltenberg attended the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs, emphasizing that NATO needs to co-operate with partners in the Asia-Pacific Regions. He pointed out that the rise of China and the following changes of global power balance have brought new threats and challenges to North America, Europe, and the whole world.

He believes that China has become more aggressive in the recent few years and engages in bullying behaviors. He specifically mentions China's aggression is threatening Taiwan and other countries. He criticizes the behavior of China destroys the Rule of Law and the international order. Stoltenberg emphasizes, “This is the reason why NATO alliances should unite and co-operate with partners.” Meantime, he pointed out, “If you worry about the rise of China and the enhancing military and economic power of China, then our unity is more important”.

China, With $400 Billion Iran Deal, Could Deepen Influence in Mideast

China and Iran signed 25 years investment agreement on Mar 27. Iran did not make the details of the agreement public before the signing, nor did the Chinese government give specifics. But experts said it believed that China agreed to invest $400 billion in Iran over 25 years in exchange for a steady supply of oil to fuel its growing economy.

The deal could deepen China’s influence in the Middle East and undercut American efforts to keep Iran isolated. But it was not immediately clear how much of the agreement can be implemented while the U.S. dispute with Iran over its nuclear program remains unresolved.

The draft also called for deepening military cooperation, including joint training and exercises, joint research and weapons development and intelligence-sharing.

Nike, Adidas join brands feeling Chinese social media heat over Xinjiang

On Mar 25, 2021, Nike and Adidas came under attack on Chinese social media over their comments the fashion brands about labour conditions in Xinjiang.

The sportswear companies were the latest caught up in a backlash prompted by a Chinese government call to stop foreign brands from tainting China’s name as internet users found statements they had made in the past on Xinjiang.

Some netizens said they would stop buying Nike and would support local brands such as Li Ning and Anta. Others told Adidas to leave China.

The dispute creates a dilemma for Western companies who must balance the desire to expand their business in China against the views of consumers in their home markets.

Shares in Parent Company Drop as #Muji Features Xinjiang Cotton

Mutiple international brands have boycotted Xinjiang cotton exported by China due to reported forced labour and human rights violation by the Chinese Government.

Japanese brand #Muji, however, continues to feature the "Xinjiang Cotton" shirt collection under the "new products" section of their China website, as of March 25, 2021.

Muji's reaction was seen as an attempt to avoid from being targeted by Chinese netizens' call for boycotting foreign brands that refused to use Xinjiang cotton.

Nevertheless, Muji's parent company #RyohinKeikaku has seen its shares fall 6.8% on the morning of March 25, in Tokyo. According to Nikkei Asia. This suggests that "investors fear the company could be affected by the fallout".

#Facebook: #ChineseHackers Attempt to Breach #Uyghurs Communication Devices for #Surveillance

Facebook reported that groups of Chinese hackers tried to set up fake accounts on Facebook in order to get in contact with Uyghurs overseas. After gaining their trust, they send their victims malicious links disguised as Uyghur news sites or online stores, in an attempt to install spyware on their phones for surveillance.

The report on the hacking activities was published on March 24, 2021 in which Facebook did not directly link the incident to the Chinese government, but said that the activity "had the hallmarks of a well-resourced and persistent operation". The hacking groups involved, known in the cybersecurity industry as Earth Empusa and Evil Eye, have also been involved in other surveillance activities in the past.

The hackers mainly target Uyghur human rights activists, journalists, and dissidents from Xinjiang. Most of them currently live in Turkey, Kazakhstan, the United States, Syria, Australia and Canada.

Democracy activists freed from Chinese jail back in custody in Hong Kong

Eight Hong Kong democracy activists, jailed in China last year after being captured at sea, arrived back in the city and were immediately detained on Mar 22 by Hong Kong Police.

“(Authorities) never communicated with the family about the whole arrangement so the family members are forced to come here and wait all day until now,” activist and barrister Chow Hang-tung, speaking on behalf of a concern group for the defendants, said at a press briefing outside a Hong Kong police station close to the mainland border.

Among the eight is Andy Li, arrested under a sweeping national security law Beijing imposed on the Asian financial hub in June 2020 that critics say is aimed at crushing dissent.

In Dec 2020, a Chinese court sentenced 10 of the 12 to between seven months and three years in jail. Defendants Tang Kai-yin and Quinn Moon, who were sentenced to three and two years, respectively, are still in southern Guangdong province.

Xinjiang cotton: How do I know if it's in my jeans?

#XinjiangCotton: How do I know if it's in my jeans?

Xinjiang cotton is some of the best fabric in the world. It's also, human rights campaigners say, produced by forced labour.

Please bear in mind that Xinjiang cotton accounts for 85% of Chinese production and 20% of world supply.

Some Western brands have removed it from their supply chains, leading to a backlash from Chinese celebrities and netizens. Welcome to the row over cotton from the Xinjiang region of China.

Certification schemes for cotton mills, such as Yarn Ethically & Sustainably Sourced (Yess), work to eliminate forced labour from the supply chain.  But that's of limited help to you as a consumer if you're just ordering a pair of jeans off a retailer's website.

"If you really want to be confident of the traceability of the cotton in your jeans, you have to look for Soil Association organic cotton or Fairtrade," advises Clare Lissaman from Common Objective (CO), a sustainable fashion sourcing platform.

#XinjiangCotton: Countless Uyghurs Detained, Abused and are Forced to Labor

H&M, a major Swedish fashion brand, was suddenly attacked by the Chinese official media after making a statement in October 2020 that it would no longer purchase cotton from Xinjiang.

As the incident gains more attention, other foreign brands such as #Nike and #Adidas becoming the target of a boycott by Chinese netizens. At the same time, a number of Chinese and Hong Kong celebrities have cut ties with these international brands, terminating their endorsement partnerships and expressing their loyalty to Xinjiang cotton on #Weibo.

Behind this “Xinjiang Cotton Incident”, there involves a major human rights issue in Xinjiang. In recent years, there have been numerous reports and studies revealing the CCP's massive detention of Uyghurs in Xinjiang, requiring them to undergo “re-education”.

There have been reports of torture, sexual abuse, and forced labor of many Uyghurs. It is believed that the "Xinjiang cotton" is the product of the forced labor of the Uyghurs.

The issue of human rights in Xinjiang has become a serious international issue at the moment, involving diplomatic wrangling between China and the West.

Resigned News Anchor Encourage Hongkongers to Take Care in Challenging Times

Wong Chun-yin, a news anchor in Hong Kong working for the TV station TVB, resigned on March 24, 2021.

At the end of his last newscast, Wong bidded farewell to his audiences, “This is my last time to present news here. Hongkongers, take care and goodbye.”

After that, Wong wrote a post on Instagram, in which he described his feelings and experience since joining the journalism industry in Hong Kong.

Wong said he was once struck by excitement when he for the first time rode on the press vehicle of TVB news as a reporter many years ago.

Wong said he used to take pride in being part of the the once well-respected “TVB News” in his profession.

“However, when doing news in the field today, we have to cover up the logo on the news vehicle with a piece of white cloth and take off logo clips on the microphone in order to hide our identity,” Wong wrote.

Reflecting from his years of experience in TVB news team, Wong expressed deep disappointment in the management, which has been regarded a cause of self censorship and the station's deteriorating integrety.

“I faced absurdity every day as a reporter, which I found it torturous," Wong wtote. "Years later, I was promoted from a front-line reporter to a news anchor, which was another eye-opening experience."

"Although I was slightly away from the field, my role as a reporter has never been changed despite the different work positions. I thenrealised that there is, in fact, no cure for in-your-face absurdity.”

Wong quoted what Chris Pattern, the former governor of Hong Kong, said to the Chinese officials when he departed Hong Kong in 1997:

“Hong Kong was like a Rolls-Royce. All you had to do was to take charge of the ignition key, get in, turn on the engine. And the car would go.”

Wong lamented, “Today, the Rolls-Royce probably has become a HengChi. It is unfortunate that the same situation has happened to the TVB news team. It is sad and a lost cause.”

In closing, Wong thanked his colleagues and friends, saying that he will certainly miss the excitement in the journalist's work and the persistence in always looking for the right words to say.

Wong sighed that “the toughest question is that times has changed and it cannot be crawled back to the old days.”
