Unafraid of threats, Cambridge student urges the school to strip Carrie Lam of her honorary fellowship

(28 Nov) Hong Kong student Ulysses Chow studies law at the University of Cambridge. Over the summer holidays, he had stayed in Hong Kong to electioneer for District Council candidate Lau Cheuk-yu. In the end, Lau successfully defeated Michael Tien Puk-sun and “liberated” Tsuen Wan Discovery Park. This news brought joyful tears to Chow, but he was not complacent - he had petitioned and rallied multiple times on campus, targeting another issue: urging the school to strip Carrie Lam of her honorary fellowship, and to protect Cambridge students from the harassment of Pro-Beijing forces.

Cambridge’s Wolfson College, the one Chow studies in, is known for its open and free academic atmosphere. In 2017, it conferred an honorary fellowship on Carrie Lam in recognition of her “outstanding performance in her role as a civil servant from the colonial era to the handover of sovereignty to China”. She is one of the 37 honorary fellows of the College. Chow, thinking that the College’s act goes against its vision, wrote to the College thrice in November 2018, June 2019, and early November 2019, urging the College to review its decision to award this title to Carrie Lam.

In June this year, he assisted in initiating a petition letter, which was signed by around 400 students and alumni, to demand a reconsideration of Lam’s qualification for the honorary fellowship, but no reply was given. Till early November, President Jane Clarke replied that the college would not elect to change its decision at this time. Chow was disappointed at the school’s indifference.

He explained: “The ineffective governance of Carrie Lam has led to the rapid deterioration of Hong Kong’s human rights, rule of law, and freedom of speech. Under the originally fair legal system, those who breach the law, be it protestors or police, will be sanctioned by the law; everyone is equal. However, now only the protestors bear criminal prosecution, while the police have repeatedly used excessive violence without being punished. This is a phenomenon of politics overriding the rule of law, and will only lead to the people’s loss of trust in the police. Those who hold public power are unrestrained and act recklessly, which will arouse greater resistance in society.” In light of the repeated blows to the rule of law, Chow felt that the social order in Hong Kong was rapidly approaching the verge of collapse.

On 12 November, he was doxxed online. His personal information was published on a mainland forum website “Zhihu” by a mainland PhD student who claimed to be from the same college as Chow.

Chow felt that white terror was spreading on campus. He informed the tutors of his college and hoped that the school would protect the personal safety and freedom of speech of students. He was also reminded of how countless Hongkongers have no fear toward autocracy and would continue to speak out against injustice and seek for the truth. He emphasised that to face the fear is to unite with fellow protestors and refuse to be silenced.

Since the rally in mid-November, he started an online petition again together with other Cambridge students with the title of “stand with human rights and academic freedom - revoke Carrie Lam fellowship and protect doxxing victim.” The petition is open to all Cambridge teachers, students, and alumni at http://tiny.cc/v1lxgz.

Carrie Lam withdraws her title of Honorary fellow awarded by Wolfson College, Cambridge

Wolfson College, University of Cambridge released a statement last month considering to deprive the Honorary Fellow of Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. According to the register of Executive Council members’ interests, Carrie Lam has already removed her Honorary Follow awarded by Wolfson College, Cambridge.

Carrie Lam shared a post on Facebook, acknowledging a letter issued by the college requesting her reply in the accusation of deviating the principle of academic freedom and speech freedom. She has sent a letter to retort. However, she felt extremely disappointed as the College has slandered her on the ground of rumour, but not facts. Therefore, she decided to withdraw the title of Honorary Fellow.
