America and China must work harder to avoid war over the future of Taiwan

The test of a first-rate intelligence, wrote F. Scott Fitzgerald, is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function. For decades just such an exercise of high-calibre ambiguity has kept the peace between America and China over Taiwan, an island of 24m people, 100 miles (160km) off China’s coast. Leaders in Beijing say there is only one China, which they run, and that Taiwan is a rebellious part of it. America nods to the one China idea, but has spent 70 years ensuring there are two.

CCP’s Political and Legal Committee mocks India in Weibo for epidemic death toll, delete in less than half a day for even mainland netizen find it dehumanizing

India has recently been affected by the rapid spread of COVID-19, with more than 300,000 confirmed cases per day, and China has recently provided medical supplies, seemingly with the intention of repairing the relationship. However, a picture posted by “China Chang’an Net”, the official Weibo of CCP's Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission, at around 1 p.m. put Chinese rocket lifted off and Indian worker in full protective clothing burning corpse side-by-side, titled “ignition in China VS ignition in India” and tagged “#more than 400,000 cases in a day#”.

Though the post has been deleted later, but a search of Google Page archive still shows that it has been shared for 9,675 times, with 4,957 comments and 98,697 likes.

Since this afternoon, there has been many repost of “China Chang’an Net” deleted Weibo message, many of which criticized China official media for posting inappropriate pictures, “Can the official stop doing those acts of villain? Shame on them”. Some China netizens denounced it as “dehumanizing”, while others didn't oppose it at all, “Is it appropriate to kill and injured our border guards? Chang’an Jun just laid out the facts, why can't they stand it?” said a netizen.

Failure to improve US-China relations ‘risks cold war’, warns Kissinger

Former US national security adviser Henry Kissinger has warned that strains between Washington and Beijing pose “the biggest problem” for the world, and a failure to improve them risks a “cold war” between the world’s two largest economies.

“It’s the biggest problem for America; it’s the biggest problem for the world. Because if we can’t solve that, then the risk is that all over the world a kind of cold war will develop between China and the United States,” Kissinger told the McCain Institute’s Sedona Forum on global issues.

Is China In Decline?

Much of last week was spent in Rome, which is overwhelming in its sights, though the highlight for me was the peace of the Appian Way. Rome is also rich in lessons on civilisation, politics and strategy – many of which appear to be lost on leaders today. In that respect it is a good place to consider the rise and fall of nations, a phenomenon that is gathering pace.
