Arrested Journalist Suspended by #RTHK Before Court's Ruling: I Feel Being Doubly Punished
RTHK journalist #BaoChoy appeared in court on Jan 14, 2021. She was accused of making false statements and violating the Road Traffic Ordinance by "not disclosing the real reason" for licence plate checks in 2020. Choy pleaded not guilty.
Choy produced two episodes of the news documentary "Hong Kong Connection" with an aim to find the perpetrators of the Yuen Long 7.21 mob attack, which injured many pro-democracy protesters, journalists and civilians on July 21, 2019.
Since Choy was arrested in November 2020, the public broadcaster RTHK has suspended her duties.
The RTHK Programme Staff Union voiced their support for Choy outside the court. After the hearing, Choy said she was disappointed with RTHK's decision before any trial took place. She felt being punished for twice for doing her job.
“I would expect RTHK to take up its moral responsibility, as well as showcasing the integrity of a media organisation. From this perspective, the decision of RTHK management to suspend me from my role as a journalist and producer of Hong Kong Connection was quite disappointing for me.”

Hong Kong Police fund boosted by whopping HK$180 million in mostly ‘anonymous’ donations
According to a report handed to the Legislative Council, the Hong Kong police welfare trust received HK$180 million (US$23.2 million) in donations last year, with 85 percent coming from anonymous sources, and the fund’s total income increased eight-fold compared to the year before.
A police spokesperson said they had kept donor identities private, as per donors’ wishes.
Civil Rights Observer’s Icarus Wong said that the gigantic amount of some one-off donations indicated that they were possibly from people with power and resources, or with the backing of organizations. As it was not possible to know the identities of such donors, Wong worried that this could affect the neutrality of the police force.

On January 10, 2021, Malaysian YouTuber, Uncle Roger, released a video he produced in partnership with #MikeChen, another YouTube food specialist.
Later on, after knowing that Mike Chen once criticized the Chinese authorities and backed Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters, Uncle Roger kowtowed and apologized to his Chinese fans, stating that the video has “triggered a host of negative impact on society.”
He quickly removed the video pleading Chinese fans to give him another chance, “I hope you can give Uncle Roger, who just entered China, a chance to improve!”
His move was criticised by many on Twitter. Nathan Law, Hong Kong pro-democracy activist in exile and the founding chairperson of Demosisto, wrote on his twitter that the comedian was “disgracefully sacrificing his basic morality to pander to his China fans.”
Nigel Ng, aka Uncle Roger, is a UK-based Malaysian comedian. He shot to fame in 2019 and gained over 3 million subscribers on his Youtube channel and 120 thousand fans on #Weibo, a Chinese social media platform.

Huawei patent mentions AI technology for identifying Uyghurs
BBC quoted IPVM, a U.S. video-surveillance research group, showing that a patent filed by Chinese leading telecom giant Huawei in 2018 mentioned an artificial intelligence system that can identify Uyghurs.
There are growing evidences in recent years that the Chinese government has been using technology to infringe human right of Uyghurs in Xinjiang, and Huawei, the leading Chinese technology company, has been accused of being involved in related human rights violation. According to IPVM, the patent was jointly authored by Huawei and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in July 2018.
Street CCTV can be used to identify races
The patent describes ways to use deep learning technology to identify the body posture characteristics of pedestrians in the street surveillance system. It also suggests that the technology can be used to identify different attributes of the target person, including races.

US cancels its United Nations envoy's visit to Taiwan, having video conference instead, and reiterate support for Taiwan’s participation in international affairs
The US State Department said that it has decided to cancel all foreign visits prior to the president’s inauguration for a smooth transition, that the US ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft's visit to Taiwan has to be cancelled. However, Taiwan's presidential office said that, after arrangement were made through diplomatic channels, President Tsai Ing-wen had a video conference with Craft at her office. Craft indicated that US would support Taiwan’s international participation, while Tsai express her appreciation to Craft and US government.
The Taiwan presidential office added that US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs David Feith, National Security Council Secretary-General Wellington Koo (Koo Li-Hsiung), Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu were also participated in the video conference. Both sides engaged in an extensive discussion about Taiwan's international participation, strengthening of Taiwan-US cooperation, the shared democratic values, opportunities to exchange educational resources and other related topics.

Stanford University terminated their only Cantonese lecturer, over 3000 people signed petition to oppose the annihilation of the language
Because of the limited budget, Stanford University in California, US, discontinued their contract with the only Cantonese lecturer in the campus. With the Cantonese programme at the university on the verge of cancellation, over 3000 people has petitioned for the programme. The University has promised to provide 2 Cantonese courses in the coming academic year, but has yet to respond to the petition for lifetime contract for the lecturer.
According to Stanford Daily, Stanford University Language Centre has discontinued their contract with Dr Sik Lee Denning last December, to “lower the budget”. Dr Denning is the founding lecturer of the “Cantonese Programme”, teaching the subject for over 20 years.
The incident raised concern in the Stanford community. Jamie Tam, assistant professor in public health at Yale University, who studied undergraduate degree in Stanford, described the Cantonese Programme as life-changing, allowing her to keep in touch with Hong Kong. “The society is facing a larger issue: people no longer view Cantonese as their mother tongue and tradition, thinking all Chinese people speak the same language.” She said.

Leung was the first pro-democracy Hongkonger to die in the anti-extradition law amendment bill movement in 2019.
After Leung's death, his yellow raincoat became a symbol of resistance in the fight for freedom.
