Chinese company registered in Hong Kong plans to build a city on the outer islands of Papua New Guinea, attracting attention as China plant a flag at Australia's doorstep

According a report from ABC, WYW Holding Limited, a Chinese company registered in Hong Kong, plans to spend more than AUD$39 billion (HKD$2,327 billion), to build a city on Daru Island, the capital of Papua New Guinea’s Western Province. The island is less than 200 km from Australian territory. The Australian government has concern about China’s threat at the “doorstep” and has indicated that it will discuss the matter with the Papua New Guinea government.

ABC cite a leaked document that WYW Holding plans to establish a “New Daru City” on Daru Island, Papua New Guinea, covering an area over 100 square km, which will include an industrial area, seaport, commercial zone, along with a resort and residential area.

British newspaper “Daily Mail” also reported that the plan will cost AUD$39 billion, and further point out that in the deterioration of China-Australia relation, China looks to plant a flag at the doorstep of Australia. It is worrying that China may have ulterior motives and secretly plan to turn this place into a naval base.

China uses deepfake technology to fake news reports

According to AFP, US-based social media research firm Graphika released a new report, claiming that China is using Deepfake technology to create fake new anchors in order to spread deceptive political content. The report analysed a video by the fictitious media outlet “Wolf News”, featuring two news anchors, a man and a woman. However, while the anchors initially looked natural, their hairlines remained stiff and their robotic voices often did not sync with their facial movements. The subtitles contained many errors as well.
