Nathan Law: “No one knows when I can go back to Hong Kong’

The sweeping new national security law passed by China this summer and has been used to crack down on the city’s protest movement, criminalise, among other things, “collusion with a foreign power”.

Nathan Lam had only a couple of weeks to make up his mind, convinced that under the new law he would be likely to face charges. “I had to contemplate, mostly by myself, to really see if I’m ready…… I have to think about our organization’s future. We still need a voice on an international level that is recognized, so we have that kind of representations.”

Those fears were confirmed in August when he was named on the international “wanted” list for crimes including “collusion with foreign powers”.

“It has never been a short-term fight for me, it may take decades to return to a democratic and free Hong Kong,” he said

With friends and allies in Hong Kong jailed or facing charges, he is even more determined to use his freedom to build on the international support they have gained this year and urge more policy steps such as US sanction against top officials and Britain’s offer of a path to citizenship for millions of Hong Kong residents.

Slavery will never be history as long as we turn a blind eye to China

Forced labour is an essential part of Chinese state’s programme to humiliate and destroy ethnic minorities. The Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC) runs prison factories and tis own paramilitary force to keep its captives in line. It help the development of the Chinese cotton industry which supplies 20% of world’s cotton market.

XPCC sends forced labour to hand-harvest cotton which still on-going in Xinjiang from the website of Chinese companies and officials as evidence. If Chinese Communist party has a reserve army of forced labour, it has no need to spend on technology.

Clothing firms once sent auditors to Xinjiang to check forced labour was not in their supply lines. But the authorities started treating them as suspects and they pulled out.

The mapping of China’s “re-education” camps only began in 2018, Rahima Mahmut says. Whether with forced labour or the overthrow of the rule of law in Hong Kong, the tyrannical turn in Chinese policy is taking time to sink in.

FTSE Russell to drop eight Chinese firms after U.S. blacklisting

Index provider FTSE Russell said they would delete shares of video security firm Hikvision and seven other Chinese companies from certain products after a U.S. order restricting purchase of their shares.

A spokesman for owner London Stock Exchange Group FTSE Russell said it acted on feedback from index subscribers and other stakeholders, and was following its policy when sanctions are imposed that restrict investments. He added that deletions from its FTSE Global Equity Index Series and several others would take effect on Dec. 21.

“We would expect all index providers to ultimately remove some Chinese securities in an effort to comply with the U.S. restrictions,” Todd Rosenbluth, head of ETF and mutual fund research for CFRA, said via e-mail.

US State Council implements visa restriction on Chinese Officials for suppressing the Dissident

Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State, announced on Friday (4th December) local time on the imposition of visa restriction on Chinese Officials in overseas united front activities and suppressing dissent in a statement. However, the statement did not include a list of sanctioned persons.

It stated that the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China subsidizes overseas organizations to propagate, coerce and bully people who oppose Beijing’s policies. It also stated that CCP regularly intimidates academics, business, civic groups, and Chinese diaspora groups, including Xinjiang, Tibet and other minorities, which have been seriously violated their human rights, with the intention to promote its Marxist-Leninist ideology and expand its influence.

Pompeo announced in the statement that the sanction would apply to Chinese and CCP officials who have threatened to use violence, steal, and release personal data to exert pressure, espionage, malicious interference on other countries’ political affairs, academic freedom, personal privacy, or business activities.

The statement also criticized that, CCP ropes in and intimidates the officials of the US and other places, overseas Chinese, academia, and civil society groups, to support its authoritarian speech and policy. Pompeo emphasized that US would continue the visa restriction policy, to clearly show the US does not welcome those people who violate international order. He urged the Chinese government to stop using coercive and intimidating acts to suppress the speech of freedom.

The US State Department Terminates 5 US-China Exchange Programmes, with 1 Involving Hong Kong

The US Secretary of State Pompeo announced on Saturday (5th) the termination of five US-China exchange programmes in a statement. It describes that the relevant plan is concealed by “cultural exchange”, which actually is a political propaganda tool to show off the soft power of China. Among the five terminated plans, one of them involves Hong Kong, which is the Hong Kong Educational and Cultural Programme.

The other four terminated plans are Policymakers Educational China Trip Programme, US-China Friendship Programme, the US-China Leadership Exchange Programme, and US-China Transpacific Exchange Programme.

Pompeo points out in a statement that these exchange activities are conducted in accordance to the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act in the US, which allows the US government employees to use the subsidy from foreign government for travel. He criticises that when other exchange programmes are mutually beneficial, the five programmes in question are fully funded and operated by the (Chinese) government as soft power propaganda tools, with a well-designed itinerary. Participants can only contact the CCP officials, which Chinese citizen is not enjoying the freedom of speech and assembly.

Germany’s prevarication on Huawei 5G is bleak news for the free world

It’s a quintessentially German solution that tries to stifle tough choices in complex procedures, ”Martin Schallbruch, a former German official, told Noah Barkin of the German Marshall Fund this week. No, he wasn’t talking about Brexit, but about Germany’s decision whether or not to let Huawei build its 5G network.

After more than a year of procrastinating in an attempt to see a powerful anti-Huawei alliance between her backbench MPs and coalition partners, Angela Merkel is ready to win in her usual way: obscure. According to Barkin, Berlin’s almost final political proposal is now being circulated among its ministries and, in the words of an anonymous official, “leaves everything wide open.”
