Hong Kong's Maritime Transport Services Industry Trade Union Demands Authorities to Release Data from Navigation Surveillance Radar

The full statement is as follows:

//12 Hong Kong residents are suspected of being arrested by the Guangdong Coast Guard within Hong Kong’s waters. Our association requests the Hong Kong Marine Department to release the navigation surveillance radar information and data as evidence.

The Chinese Coast Guard on August 26 announced in WeChat that on August 23 at about 9 o'clock, they intercepted a suspected illegal cross-border vessel in Chinese waters just outside Hong Kong southeast and detained 12 Hong Kong residents.

Our association demands the Hong Kong Marine Department to release the radar images of the navigation surveillance system as evidence to substantiate the actual position of the vessel at the time, verifying whether the Guangdong Coast Guard had cross-border enforcement. It will also serve to relieve the general public’s concerns and to protect the safety of local marine operators and passengers. //

HK Police: I Used My Baton to Calm Down the Arrestees

Battlefield Social Worker, Jackie Chan Hung-sau and 7 others were charged with rioting at a pro-democracy rally on August 31, 2019. September 15 marked the 6th day of the 17-day trial.

In court, the police's Special Tactical Squad officer, Wong Ming-fai, denied the accusation that he had violently bashed one of the defendants with his police baton.

The officer claimed that he wanted to prevent the defendant from running away, saying, “I used the baton to control and calm him down. I did not bash him violently.”

The defending lawyer also pointed out that there were 7 to 8 people encircling the 3rd defendant on the scene and asked police officer Tsang Hing-hung to identify his colleagues.

The officer said that he could only tell by reading their operation numbers. The lawyer further challenged whether it is a reasonable expectation for a civilian to tell whether a black-clad onlooker is a police officer or not, since none of the police officers displayed their warrants nor identification pin.

Prosecutor: Leaving Hong Kong after Attending June 4 Tiananmen Massacre Vigil is Absconding

In Hong Kong, 26 pro-democracy activists were charged with "unlawful assembly" by attending the Tiananmen Massacre Vigil in Hong Kong in 2020.

The prosecution attempted to apply for the imposition of bail conditions prohibiting defendants from leaving Hong Kong. Among the 26 defendents, former Demosisto chairperson Nathan Law Kwun-chung and Sunny Cheung, former spokesman for the Hong Kong Higher Institutions International Affairs Delegation (#HKIAD) had left Hong Kong.

The Magistrate pointed out that the summon was made on August 6, 2020 while Nathan Law had left Hong Kong as early as June 27, 2020.

Prosecution, however, insisted that by attending the "unlawful assembly" on June 4, “Law knows well he has breached the law.” Co-defendants in the court all laughed at this unprofessional explanation.

61% Respondents in Hong Kong Are Willing to Spend A Lifetime in Pursuit of Freedom

In a survey conducted by Stand News, 90% of respondents identified themselves with the localist group or the pan-democracy camp.

In the localist group, 75% of them were determined and would continue the fight for democracy; while in the pan-democracy camp, about 60% of them would continue.

Regarding the question of “how long Hong Kong would become a democratic society”, 60% of the respondents thought that it would never happen. 40% of the centrist camp/neutral fraction and 29% of pan-democracy camp constitute this tier.

Another 28% of the overall respondents estimated a duration of around 10-29 years for Hong Kong to be democratized. This estimation scored the highest among the localist group (27%).

In other words, localist supporters are more optimistic about the future than the pan-democracy camp, as relatively more people from the localist group believe that it would take shorter time to achieve democracy.

When asked the duration of time they could wait for democracy, 61% of them said they were willing to spend their lifetime in pursuit of democracy.
