Fears of unemployment causing social unrest, Beijing re-ignites street vendor economy, official media denies "disorder"

(17 Oct) The boom of the street vendor economy first advocated by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in June 2020 quickly waned, with government officials immediately reproaching the method as impractical.

//Li had never encouraged “disorderly vending”. Government officials were deliberately tarnishing his name, rather.

//ever since Li’s advocacy for the “street vendor economy”, he had come under fire by state media. However, similar policies for the street vendor economy were maintained at the local level and included night markets and small storefronts.

//Economist Law Ka-chung indicated that the phenomenon of street-vending was proof of China’s struggling economy.

//He believed that “street-vending” would do little to help the Chinese economy because it was not part of its formal economy; there is no taxation or official records [of the businesses].

Japanese Corporate CEO bought monitors at Chinese e-commerce platform Later found out the “monitor” was just a printing pattern on an Iron plate

(Jan 3) Many people have tried shopping using an online shopping platform for its convenience and low price, but the possibility of getting the falsely advertised item is not low due to no actual physical product display for reference. The president and CEO of a famous Japanese corporate Maywa Denki, 土佐信道 san, shared on Twitter that he recently found a 10.1” inch monitor, costing JPY2,500 (around HKD186 / USD25) each, at a Chinese online shopping platform Wish. He thought it was a good deal and ordered 5 monitors. However, when the shipment arrived, he found out the “monitor” was actually a “monitor” picture printed on an “iron plate”.

Maywa Denki (土佐信道) san ended up to add a few magnetic Maywa Denki musical equipment on these iron plates and resold them on the company website at JPY2,600, all of which were sold up within a few hours. He shared this story on Twitter of successfully earning JPY500, which matches the company style of fun, laugh, and jokes.

Many Doubts on million negatives results on COVID-19 Testing Campaign in Qingdao China

//Recently, Qingdao Government in China announced the completion of 5 days COVID-19 Testing campaign in the community. The result showed that there is no positive case in more than 10 million citizens tests; however, people including Qingdao citizens, are doubting the result.

//The Epoch Times found that no creditable or trustable institution on controlling COVID-19 in China participates in this Testing Campaign in Qingdao.

//Website of the National Health Committee in Qingdao published on 30 Sep the “List of Venues on Testing/Sample Collection of COVID-19 Test in Qingdao City”, showed 74 institutions, but only 37 of which are qualified to conduct COVID-19 Testing.

//Because all the hospitals have daily routine duties, their equipment and staff are relatively stable, which is difficult to spare resources for this large scale testing in the community.

//Virology expert Dr. DONG Yu Hong explained in an interview with the Epoch Times, “if Qingdao could complete 10 million testings within 5 days, 10 health workers work as a group to collect samples, it implies that there are 200 laboratories to complete the testing of 1,000 samples daily.”

//SARS-COVID-2 is an RNA virus that can be very easy to be dissolved, collected samples needed to be kept in a professional liquid for storing the virus, which has to be sent for testing as soon as possible.

//the laboratory would not have sufficient fridges to store bundle samples from the community, and the huge numbers of test boxes and its supplies are also questionable.

//All citizens were tested and results are completed in 5 days but many not yet received the result.

//A woman in Qingdao expressed to our reporters that the government promised the result would be released within 2-3days, but we still did not know the result on the 5th day (now). “This is impossible for the public to know how to test, what method to test, and what is the result.”

//Netizens doubted the government’s result, “when the World is being annoyed by the serious epidemic, there is no local case in the origin of the epidemic, all positive cases are shifted to the responsibility of overseas imported travelers”.

//you all, outside the jurisdiction, should understand what is going on in our country, China. The public is unable to grasp any information, from our government.

//A man in Qingdao expressed to our reporters, “the collected samples number are high and the government is forced to do it. But it claimed that the sample would be sent to third-party institutions for test won’t, its quality is unknown.”

//He strengthened, “this government does not have any creditability, we don’t believe the government. This is an Authoritarianism, we can do nothing.”

Hong Kong’s Home Affairs Department bans the distribution of “Peaceful Life” Fai Chun – District Councillors: The phrase sourced from a China TV drama song

//Home Affairs Department (HAD) in Hong Kong disallows the printing of “Peaceful Life” Fai Chun from Wong Tai Sin District Council (WTSDC).

//The councilor questioned that the HAD by banning the printing of Fai Chun could violate the rules against China or China approve TV drama.

//MOK Yee-ha: Elderly commonly share graphics with “Peaceful Life” phrase

//This year WTSDC would like to produce Fai Chun with the phrase “Peaceful Life” and distribute it to the residents.

//She stated that many elderly think “Peaceful Life” has good meanings, “many graphics used or shared between elders’ phones use peaceful life”.

//The WTSDC started that they considered the perspectives of citizen and called for the authority to be open-minded, “this is a civil society, and stop thinking of it as from only one perspective”.

//Service Committee of Choi Hung Estate, MOK Ho-chit Sean, mentioned, the phrase “Peaceful Life” is also used on the website of Social Welfare Department (SWD) in Hong Kong, calling citizens to send each other messages with the phrase, “sending others good wishes, peaceful life for being good”.

//LAU Ka-man pointed out “Peaceful Life” used by China Central Television

//Fai Chun in question was “referenced from the popular history of the People Republic of China”, different religions would also blessing each other using the same phrase, demonstrated that “Peaceful Life” is not inappropriate.

//District Councillor pointed out the Social Welfare Department, Leisure and Culture Service Department (L&CSD) also used “Peaceful Life”: it’s only for blessing others.

//Chairman of District Council, HUI Kam-shing of Hong Kong Association for Democracy and People’s Livelihood, blamed the HAD and Secretary for abusing their power, District Council had approved its production, which should be executed effectively, “unless the production is breaking the Law, it should not be ban due to inappropriateness”.

//Commissioner of HAD reiterated the wording is not common blessing

//WONG Chi-wah, Commissioner of HAD, who had been received many criticisms, stated that Head of HAD was the financial controller of “social participation plan, he has the authority to approve the funding. He reiterated the reply from the Secretary, and repeated that “Peaceful Life” was not commonly used in Fai Chun, leading the possibility of public unpleasantness.

//Don CHONG mocked, “ wording likes “Liberate HK, Revolution of our times” should not be said, but why “Peaceful Life” is prohibited?”

//HUI Kam-shing advised HAD again for not to obstructing the plan, and stated that WTSDC would bear all legal liabilities. He pointed out that the HAD only governed the officials and monitored whether the operation of Councils had fulfilled the “District Council Ordinance”, instead of undergoing political screening.

‘We’re coming to get you’: China’s critics facing threats, retaliation for activism in Canada

Cherie Wong, the convener of Alliance Canada Hong Kong, an organizatiom fighting for the autonomy of Hong Kong, has been facing repeated death and rape threats.

For instance, in January 2020, even when she had a friend book her a hotel room in Vancouver under a different name, she received threats over the phone.

“I sat in my room and just started shaking, realizing that I could be in very real danger and not knowing what to do,” she said.

Wong said activists who are critical of the China often have their families in China visited by government officials.

“They come and knock on your door and say, ‘we’re coming in to talk to you about your family,’” she explained.

“What dissidents face in Canada is often on the grey area of criminal harassment and just discomfort that you feel (in) daily life,” Wong said.

//Police entered the Apple Daily office premises at around 07:30 local time on Thursday (23:30 GMT Wednesday) and blocked off all entrances and exits.

Police said in a statement that they conducted a search operation at a media company, adding that their warrant "covered the power of searching and seizure of journalistic materials".

The police separately visited the homes of editor-in-chief Ryan Law, parent company Next Digital's CEO Cheung Kim-hung, COO Chow Tat-kuen, Apple Daily publisher Chan Pui-man and Director Cheung Chi-wai, and arrested them.

Police did not name those arrested but confirmed that the five people, aged between 47 and 63, were arrested for "collusion with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security".//

//In an apparent show of force, more than 200 police officers were involved in the search of Apple Daily’s offices.

Police also froze 18 million Hong Kong dollars ($2.3 million) in assets belonging to three companies linked to Apple Daily, said Li Kwai-wah, a senior superintendent at Hong Kong’s National Security Department.

Trading in shares of Next Digital was halted Thursday morning at the request of the company, according to filings with the Hong Kong stock exchange.

[Hong Kong Journalists Association Chairman Chris Yeung] said that the court warrant that allowed police to search the offices of Apple Daily had undermined journalists’ ability to protect their materials, a vital part of upholding press freedom.//

//Five hundred Hong Kong police officers sifted through reporters’ computers and notebooks at pro-democracy tabloid Apple Daily on Thursday, the first case in which authorities have cited media articles as potentially violating the national security law.

“This is a blatant attack on the editorial side of Apple Daily,” Mark Simon, an adviser to Lai who is outside Hong Kong, told Reuters. “They’re arresting the top editorial folks.”

Asked how long he thinks the newspaper can survive, Simon said: “They decide, not us,” referring to authorities.//

//The raids were condemned by journalism and human rights groups.

Steven Butler, Asia program coordinator of the Committee to Protect Journalists, said the arrests destroyed “any remaining fiction that Hong Kong supports freedom of the press”.

“China, which controls Hong Kong, may be able to eliminate the paper, which it sees as an annoying critic, but only at a steep price to be paid by the people of Hong Kong, who had enjoyed decades of free access to information.”//

//Press freedoms are a fundamental right guaranteed by Hong Kong's Basic Law, the city's mini-constitution. But experts have worried about the usage of the national security law, and there have been indications of pressures on other media in the city.

A recent ranking of worldwide press freedoms, meanwhile, indicates that the environment in Hong Kong has deteriorated. The international watchdog Reporters Without Borders — which qualifies such freedoms based on data on abuse and acts of violence against journalists along with a questionnaire to experts — ranked Hong Kong 80 out of 180 countries for press freedom, down from 18 out of 138 in 2002.//

//“Hong Kong has been left with little free speech under the national security law, which is really aimed at silencing all dissent,” said Victoria Hui, an associate professor of political science at the University of Notre Dame. “Beijing has reined in Hong Kong and will continue to take whatever it takes to silence any dissenting voices.”

In a letter to readers on Thursday afternoon, Apple Daily said police officers confiscated a “large number of items,” including the computers of 38 journalists, over the course of a five-hour search of the company’s offices.

The newspaper said it now “faces an unprecedented crackdown by the regime,” but vowed its staff would be “standing firm” despite the growing pressure.

“Hong Kong’s press freedom is now hanging by a thread,” the letter said. “Though we are facing a sweeping clampdown on our publication, the staff of Apple Daily will hold fast to our duties faithfully and press on till the end to see the arrival of dawn.”//

Closure of Hong Kong’s last pro-democracy newspaper should spur Ottawa to action, critics say

On its final day of publication, the last pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong sold every copy in the region within hours Thursday after being forced into closing by Beijing-backed authorities, who arrested a handful of the newspaper’s executives and editors last week while freezing some of its assets.
Hong Kong residents lined up at newsstands to grab a final copy of the one-million circulation Apple Daily, the Associated Press reported. Many say it was the last uninhibited critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its Hong Kong affiliates.

Hong Kong’s Biggest Pro-Democracy Newspaper Prints Final Edition

On June 23, 2021, crowds of Hong Kong residents gathered in support outside the headquarters of Apple Daily, one of the last bastions of media resistance to Beijing, as it sent its final edition to print. The paper announced it would close after the arrests of senior leadership this week under the draconian national security law introduced last year. Banks froze the newspaper’s assets to avoid being charged themselves.

The rollout of the national security law has seen successive groups targeted: first protest leaders, then democratic politicians, and now journalists. More than 800 Apple Daily staff have lost their jobs while Hong Kong has lost its long-cherished freedom of speech.

"Perfect Harmony": A July 1 without #AppleDaily and Annual Pro-democracy March

July 1, 2021 marks the 24th year since Hong Kong was handed over to China, and is also the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party (#CCP). It is also the first July 1 after the outspoken #AppleDaily was shut down and the annual pro-democracy march has been banned by the police.

The headlines of the remaining printed newspapers in the city sing praises in "perfect harmony" for the CCP and the HKSAR.

A full-page ad adorned the front page of Ming Pao, Economic Journal, Oriental Daily, Sing Tao Daily, Hong Kong Economic Times, South China Morning Post, all wishing the SAR and the Party a happy birthday.
