2049 | Central
8 years ago, a ferry and a ship collide near Lamma Island, causing 39 deaths and over 90 injuries. Yet, the reason of collision has yet been investigated. Today, citizens set up an alter at the Central Ferry Pier No.4 to commemorate the incident.

At around 20:49, 10 riot police cordoned the alter with an orange band and interrupted the memorial ceremony.

Also, police provoked people on spot, mocking them for exploiting the incident, and the offerings were rubbish. However, citizens have held the memorial event for 8 years, and that was the first time they receive such brutal treatment from police.

Sources stated that police charged citizens on spot after the ceremony.

HK Police Order Bereaved Families Mourning the Lamma Ferry Collision Victims for the 8th Year to "Stop Acting"

On September 30, 2020, an open letter was issued by the families of the victims of the Lamma ferry collision, which took place on October 1, 2012.

The letter asks the Hong Kong authorities to reveal the truth behind the tragic collision that claimed 39 lives and do justice as had been promised.

It is revealed that after 8 years, the police investigation remains unfinished. Owing to the incomplete police report, death certificates cannot be issued to the victims. Without any concrete answer, the authorities forced their families to “let go and move on”.

8 years since their family members had passed away, the bereaved familes are still waiting for the truth they rightly deserved to be revealed.

In the latest open letter, the families demanded a thorough investigation of the cause of the collision, a full disclosure of the report and the conviction of the marine officers involved.

Every year, friends and families of the victims mourned at the Central Ferry Pier, where the fatal ferry had never arrived, bringing with them flowers and paper offerings.

For the first time after 8 years, on Oct 1, 2020, police interrupted the mournin and ordered the saddened families to “stop acting” and disperse.

Police officers even removed right away the families’ offerings to the deceased, causing an elderly burst into tears and faint on the scene.

Regardless, the police continued their action and fined the bereaved families for breaching the gathering ban.

8 Years After Lamma Ferry Collision in 2012: Police Did Not Complete Report, Pro-Beijing Lawmakers Ask Bereaved Families to "Let Go"

On October 1, 2012, the ferry "Lamma IV", carrying Hong Kong Electricity’s employees, their families and children, departed Lamma Island for the National Day firework display over Victoria Harbour.

Shortly after its departure, the boat was fatally collided by a Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry’s passenger vessel, "Sea Smooth".

This is reportedly the deadliest maritime incident in Hong Kong since 1971.

More than 100 people were flung into the water. 39 passengers of Lamma IV, including eight children, died in tragedy.

Lamma IV began to sink almost immediately, and the low visibility and obstacles on board made the rescue operation very difficult.

At the time of the incident, Hong Kong was celebrating China’s National Day, resulting in the area’s already bustling waters being unusually overcrowded.

An inquiry into the collision revealed that the safety standards on the Lamma IV was not properly enforced and there had been a "litany of errors".

The Hong Kong Marine Department was found turning a blind eye to these issues and continued to renew the license of Lamma IV.

The case has then been handed to the HK Police Force for further investigation. 8 years has passed, and no findings has ever been disclosed, not to mention a clear timeline or progress report of any form.

The families of the deceased have waited in grief and they are still waiting.

The Coroner's Court is unable to hold a hearing because the police has not completed their investigation.

Pro-establishment lawmakers brazenly suggested for the government to stop looking into the incident, saying that one should “let go”, “move on” and “be forward-looking”.
