US State Department Reportedly Recommends Putting China’s Ant Group on Trade Blacklist
As US-China relations remain tense, sources have indicated to Reuters that the State Department had proposed placing Ant Group on the trade blacklist to the Trump administration ahead of its listing on the US stock market.
A financial technology firm, Ant Group is planning to be listed on stock markets in Shanghai and Hong Kong with an estimated market value of a record-breaking 35 billion US dollars. It is unclear at the moment as to when the US government will add the firm to its Entity List, but it is believed that this is a sign from hardliners in Washington that American investors should refrain from taking part in the firm’s initial public offering.
While the local law makes it difficult for US firms to sell high-tech products to companies on the Entity List, how this latest move actually affects China is still a matter of debate. Reuters noted that while telecom companies like Huawei may suffer from being blacklisted, placing a fintech firm on the list could be more of a gesture.

60 Chinese and Hong Kong Enterprises Including SMIC and DJI Added to US Department of Commerce Entity List
US Department of Commerce added 60 Chinese and Hong Kong companies, including chipmaker SMIC and drone manufacturer DJI, to its Entity List on 18 December for their ties to the Chinese military.
The US Department of Commerce has added 77 companies to the Entity List recently, including 59 Chinese companies and one Hong Kong company. The Department of Commerce stated that these companies have been involved in activities contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States, include enabling China human right abuse, supporting the militarization and unlawful maritime claims in the South China Sea, acquiring U.S.-origin items in support of the People’s Liberation Army’s programs, and engaging in the theft of U.S. trade secrets.
Among these entities, SMIC has been accused of being involved in China's military-civilian fusion (MCF) program, with evidences of activities tied to the Chinese military industrial complex. The Secretary of Commerce Department Wilbur Ross stated that it is making sure that China is not able to leverage U.S. technologies, through SMIC, to support its military modernization, and emphasized that it is a necessary measure.

It discovered that there are 3 public pension funds in Canada invest in the Chinese companies which involve in Chinese military and human rights violations. The investigation discovered, two of the funds have been invested into the Chinese companies such as China Communications Construction, which have been blacklisted by United States. The investment involved amounts to $373 million Canadian dollars (approximately $2.39 billion HKD)

Furthermore, it also encourages the government to include companies involved in human rights violations on the “Entity List” and requires the Financial Consumer Council of Canada to pass legislation to restrict investment in companies involved in human rights violations.
