Senior Inspector Unable to give a Credible Account of Attack

Last year on 12 June 2019, the SAR government insisted to push the Anti-extradition Bill through the Legislative Council (LegCo) for a second reading. A large number of discontented civilians encircled the LegCo building and successfully stopped any further deliberation of the controversial Bill.

On the same day, a 25 year old CCTV technician was waiting to cross a road just right outside of the Wanchai Police Headquarter, when someone behind him tapped him on his shoulder. It was suspected that the technician turned around, took a swing at the one behind and hit the man at hiz left neck area. He immediately apologised, saying it happened due to his natural reflexes.

It turned out that the man behind the technician was actually a Senior Inspector executing his duty in plainclothes, not wearing his warrant card. The technician was charged for assaulting a police officer and was summoned to court hearing yesterday (January 8).

The Senior Inspector stated in his statement that he was standing behind the defendant, on his left hand side. The defendant turned towards his right and hit him on his left neck area. In other words, the defendant had to turn his body by 270 degree in order to assault, which was challenged by defence lawyer as “impossible to happen”. The judge also queried during the hearing whether the Senior Inspector had difficulties differentiating left from right.
