Victim of 7.21 Yuen Long Mob Attacks Persists in Seeking Justice Despite the Threat of Arrest

Mr So, a chef in Hong Kong, has wounds all over his back resulting from the attack by white-clad mobs at “Kai Tei” in Yuen Long on 21 July 2019. He opened a thread in LIHKG, an internet forum, on the morning of August 26, 2020, with a heading of “just in case I am arrested. Let me create a post here first”. This came after the police had arrested pro-democracy lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting, who had been investigating the mob attacks on that day.

In the post, Mr So wrote that he felt shocked, confused and angry about the arrest of Lam, but expected more people to be arrested. He believed that he also had to be ready that he might be arrested one day. Mr. So emphasised he would continue striving for justice and truth through legal procedures, “It’s up to them if they want to arrest me. It’s easy to find a stick to beat a dog.”

Mr. So was off from work on 21 July, 2019 when he was beaten by 20 people after leaving a shopping mall. “I was not capable and had no chance to hit back,” he said.

He was not worried and did not regret to speak openly, “I won’t commit suicide and do not have any mental illness.” He won’t abandon his right striving for the rights to justice and truth of “a group of victims and all Hongkongers”.

While responding to an inquiry of the Stand News, Mr So expressed that he felt ridiculous towards the arrest of the pro-democracy lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting by the police. “A plaintiff becomes the defendant and Department of Justice (DoJ) withdraws prosecution, so I think I might be the next target. That’s why to sign a note for investigation by opening a forum in LIHKG.”

Hong Kong Authorities Eradicate All Mentionings of "Separation of Powers" From Textbooks, their Websites and Database

It was recently found that the Education Bureau in Hong Kong has removed the description of “Separation of Three Powers” from high school textbooks.

On 31 August, 2020, Secretary for Education Kelvin Yeung defended the procedure and asked the public and the media not to compare the previous and newer versions of the textbooks.

Yeung emphasized that the textbook content should align with the objectives and the purpose of the subject, “the fact that there is no separation of powers should be stated clearly in the textbooks". Yeung continued, “people can’t criticise the deleted content on the ground as the older version hasn’t been assessed officially. Rhey are not comparable.”

Tin Fong-Chak, Vice-Chairman of Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union and liberal studies teacher, pointed out that the Chief Justice and scholars have recognised the separation of powers as a “common sense” in Hong Kong. Even if the government disagrees with this viewpoint, it should give room for discussion and allow different opinions in society, rather than erasing the whole part without any consultation.

Tin emphasised that liberal studies is not a propaganda tool but a site for understanding different views. If the authorities make changes without any consultation, teachers would be placed under pressure. According to Tin, civil and legal education are currently regressing in Hong Kong.

HK Police Force is “fabricating and distorting history” : Media

Apple Daily called HK Police “the author of Hong Kong's unofficial history” as the Force has been found for incessantly downplaying their wrong doings with biased descriptions and excuses.

Read following 3 incidents, most recently happened.

On Aug 31, 2020, Hong Kong police choked, pepper sprayed and pushed a pregnant woman on the ground during an operation.

Although the Force had released a statement claiming their concern for the woman, a newer modified statement was issued on September 12, responding to the public criticism of the police's excessive use of force.

In the latest statement, the violent incident of several police officers forcefully separating the 8-month pregnant woman from her husband, being pepper sprayed in close-range and pushed to the ground was diluted into a sentence with only 7 words, “A couple had fallen to the ground” ( 兩名男女曾跌倒).

On September 6, 2020, a 12-year-old girl was on her way to a stationary shop but ended up being body slammed and subdued between the legs of several riot policemen.

The Force insisted that the 12-year-old had looked "suspicious", and their use of force was “based on enforcement responsibility” (基於執法責任) .

Are the Hong Kong Authorities "renewing" the city's history to please the Chinese Communist Government?

The Hong Kong Museum of History announced earlier that the 20-year-long exhibition, Hong Kong Story, will be closed on 19 October for renewal and re-opening is scheduled in 2022.

Founder of a popular Facebook page “Old Hong Kong Photos” and author of history books, Jack Yu revealed that the Museum approached him in 2018, invited him to sponsor materials concerning changing coastal lines in Hong Kong as possible exhibits.

In the meantime, he was also asked to conduct researches on “integration of China-Hong Kong border fronts”. Topics including reduced restricted area at borders, the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Western Passage, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, and the launch of High-speed Rail in Hong Kong.

“New projects not even completed at the moment, such like development of country parks and artificial islands were also mentioned as new exhibits,” Yu added.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the supervising body of the Museum denied it as expected.

Police Arrests Journalist of News Programme Addressing Police-Triad Alleged Collusion during Yuen Long 7.21 Triad Attack

On the afternoon of Nov 3, 2020, police arrested RTHK's "Hong Kong Connection" journalist Bao Choy Yuk-ling, who had produced special issues addressing police brutality and misconduct.

According to iCable News, Choy was arrested for violating the Road Traffic Ordinance. According to Now News, police claimed that Choi looked up car ownership from car plate number on the suspicion of falsifying statement.

"Hong Kong Connection" is a popular news documentary produced by RTHK, a public broadcaster which has been under the attack of the authorities and Beijing loyalists.

In 2019 and 2020, the programme featured two episodes on the 7.21 Yuen Long Triad attack on civilians. This incident that happened on July 21, 2019 was referred by many to as a police-Triad collusion, for that the police had allegedly turned a blind eye to the white-clad gangsters' brutal attack on civilians.

In the episode "7.21 Yuen Long Nightmare" aired in July 2019, the programme collected a large amount of surveillance TV footage, pointing out that the police had patrolled around the areas where the white-clad gangsters gathered that afternoon.

In the episode "Who Controls the Truth" aired in July 2020, the programme displayed that CID police did not intervene at all while walking among the white-clad gangsters armed with weapons.

Choy, who was arrested by the police this afternoon, took part in the production of both episodes. The police also searched Choy's residence.

Granny Wong: Truth of 721 incident will eventually be divulged

Granny Wong was sighted in Yuen Long West Rail Station braving the grip of National Security Law and enforcement of social distancing restrictions in Hong Kong. Despite her old age, Granny Wong displayed of her behaviour, courage and defiance to fight on for democracy and freedom.

Pointing at a movie poster that read “Lie”, Wong wanted Hongkongers to remain hopeful that “lies will be burst eventually like balloons being popped.”

On the evening of 21 July 2019, a large group of white-clad mobsters, allegedly linked to triads, indiscriminately attacked pro-democracy protesters on their way home on a West Rail train with steel rods and rattan canes. At least 45 people were severely injured, including the elderly, children, journalists and lawmakers. Hong Kong Police, suspected of colluding with the white-clad mobsters, has then been criticised for their inaction in the incident amid the attack of innocent civilians.

However, Hong Kong police were attempting to re-write the history as recounting the clashes as "between two evenly-matched rivals" and denied that they were slow to respond.

Journalist Unions Condemn HK Government for Limiting the Right to Know, As Press Briefing Goes Online Without Consultation

On Jan 3, 2021, the Hong Kong government's Department of Health suddenly announced that, in order to "reduce risk of spreading the coronavirus", the daily COVID press briefing will be held as a live broadcast beginning on Jan 4, 2021. All questions by the press would only be accepted in written format.

The Hong Kong Journalists Association and 8 other press unions issued a statement later that evening, criticizing the government's intention to filter and avoid sensitive questions and infringe the journalists’ right to raise further questions and the public’s right to know.

The journalists' associations also demanded the government to revert the decision and hold the press briefing as the way it used to be.

In the statement, the Hong Kong Journalists Association (#HKJA) together with other unions that represented Stand News, RTHK, hkCNews, Next Digital, Mingpao, the Independent Commentators Association, and the Hong Kong Press Photographers Association criticised the government's unreasonable and sudden decision before consulting the press.

They worried that sensitive questions would be filtered and avoided from now on, further eroding the freedom of the press in Hong Kong.

Local Newspaper Accused of "Smearing" After Publishing a News Report about the Hong Kong Police

The Hong Kong Police Force accused local newspaper #AppleDaily of "smearing", as one of its article revealed that the Hong Kong police's firearm orders had been cancelled by foreign manufacturers’ due to the police’s misconduct including arbitrary arrests during the pro-democracy movement.

On Feb 15, 2021, Apple Daily headlined that the American firearm manufacturer SIG cancelled the Hong Kong police’s submachine gun orders because of its arbitrary arrests during the Anti-ELAB movement and the implementation of the #NationalSecurityLaw.

It was said that the Hong Kong police tried to buy CZ SCORPION EVO 3 A1 submachine guns from Česká zbrojovka a.s. Uherský Brod, a firearm company in the Czech Republic.

In response to the news report, the Hong Kong Police posted on Facebook and issued a letter to Apple Daily chief editor Ryan Law Wai-kwong, claiming that the term “arbitrary arrest” in the headline was defaming.

The Hong Kong Police also accused Apple of slandering as it mentioned that the police sometimes “shoot not just once, but 4 or 5 times continuously” when subduing citizens.

The police described Apple Daily’s headline as “inexplicable, exaggerating and misrepresenting” and demand the local newspaper for a clarification.

AFP correspondant Xingqi Su revealed on Twitter on Feb 16, 2021 that the Czech Republic cannot export arms to Hong Kong due to international emargo. "AFA arms exports are concerned, Czech has made no difference between HK and mainland China est 2020," the reporter tweeted.

National Security Police Raids June 4 Museum in Hong Kong, Damaging Exhibits and Locking Out Owner

On September 9, 2021, the national security police in Hong Kong raided the already-closed June 4 museum in Mong Kok.

This is followed by the arrest of four core members of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China.

Police carried off display boards, the museum's logo, material showing #XiJinping and #MaoZedong, 39 boxes of books, as well as other items, and took them away in a truck. Some exhibition panels were damaged in the process.

When a former member went to examine the museum site after the raid, he found that the security camera had been removed, and electric cable were damaged. The door lock had also been changed, and he could not enter the museum. On the gate, the national security police left a handwritten note: "'contact the Mongkok Police Station".

The Alliance had been the organizer of the annual June 4 candlelight vigil since 1990. The event as well as the museum aimed to remember the Tiananmen Massacre by the Chinese Communist Party on June 4, 1989.

Hong Kong Alliance Chairpersons Charged with "Inciting Subversion of State"

On September 10, 2021, the Department of Justice (#DoJ) in Hong Kong laid charges of "Inciting subversion of state power" against the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, as well as its chairperson #LeeCheukYan, and co-chairs #AlbertHo and #ChowHangTung.

The Alliance was informed of the charges via the Hong Kong police, whose National Security department had yesterday carried off a large number of items from the Alliance's June 4 museum as evidence.

The case was brought to court on September 10, 2021. The court denied Chow's application for bail, while Lee and Ho have been detained for long under other charges relating to the pro-democracy movement.

[Editor's note: The same charge of "inciting subversion" were used by China against activists of the 1989 Tiananmen protests, which the Alliance commemorated in a candlelight vigil every year. It had not been applicable to Hong Kong until the introduction of the #NationalSecurityLaw in 2020.]

#HongKong Bashes #GlobalMedia With Hundreds of Complaint Letters

//From Slovakia to Japan, top Hong Kong officials have fired off at least 500 letters in 2022 blasting critical foreign media coverage, as the city wages a global battle to safeguard its reputation as a liberal financial hub.

At least 174 media outlets in almost 30 countries received missives from city leaders -- including its now chief executive, #JohnLee -- since China announced in May 2020 that it would impose a national security law on the former British colony. The correspondence, often written both in English and the publication’s native language, was uploaded to the “Clarifications” tab of the government’s communications platform known as Brand Hong Kong.

About half of the letters, which responded to a mix of reports and editorials, hit back at criticism of Beijing’s sweeping security law, while roughly a third defended a mandate that only Communist Party loyalists can hold office in the city. Neighboring Asian nations got 42% of the complaints, led by Japan and South Korea, while business publications including the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Economist got the most letters. The police arrested an online media journalist, for reportedly holding a British Hong Kong flag when the Chinese national anthem was heard.

The man is the first Hong Kong citizen being arrested under #NationalAnthemOrdinance. He was being charged for insulting the national flag after a year of the event.

The case was first trialed on the afternoon of July 22, 2022. Since the counsel of the defendent requested more time to obtain the documents from prosecutor, Judge #LauSukHan approved the request and schedule the trial to September 9, 2022.
