U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer on Hong Kong Democracy and Human Rights Act
:
"Freedom will prevail, and the Chinese system will either change or fail"

"We have sent a message to President Xi: Your suppression of freedom, whether in Hong Kong, in northwest China, or anywhere else, will not stand. You cannot be a great leader and you cannot be a great country when you oppose freedom, when you are so brutal to the people of Hong Kong, young and old, who are protesting, when you are so brutal to the Uighurs in northwest China, and when China is censored so that Chinese people can’t get the truth. History has shown that that always fails, President Xi—always fails.

To the people of China: We stand with you in freedom.

To the kids in Hong Kong, the students and the adults: We stand with you.

To the Uighurs who simply want to practice their religion: We stand with you.

Freedom will prevail, and the Chinese system will either change or fail."

U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley on Hong Kong Democracy and Human Rights Act:
"Report after report of violent assaults taking place inside police stations"

[Editor's note: While protesters are still being trapped by the police at PolyU, what Senator Merkley has pointed on the police brutality at public and inside the police station echoes many protesters' worries (especially those inside #PolyU who would be arrested for riotting 'indiscriminately', as the government had announced)]

"One young woman was clubbed from behind with a police baton and continued to be beaten even after she was on the ground with her arms zip-tied behind her.

We have seen tear gas fired into confined spaces, in violation of the U.N. Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms. We have seen brutal police tactics that continued even when women and men were held in captivity or in custody. There has been report after report of violent assaults taking place inside police stations."

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio on Hong Kong Democracy and Human Rights Act:
China is pushing Hong Kong to ‘‘one country, one system’’— the Chinese system

"Even though the Government of Hong Kong has pulled out from pursuing that law, the protests have continued because the people of Hong Kong have seen what is coming. They see the steady effort to erode their autonomy and their freedoms.

...China is also pushing for something very ominous. They call it patriotic education. What China is really pushing for in Hong Kong is moving from ‘‘one country, two systems’’ to ‘‘one country, one system’’— the Chinese system."

U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Marsha Blackburn on Hong Kong Democracy and Human Rights Act: "The absolute horrors of authoritarian rule" in Hong Kong

"It is important to note that China has really earned its place atop the list of the world’s most notorious human rights violators, and over the past few weeks, Hong Kong’s descent into chaos and bloodshed has provided a much-needed reminder of the horrors, the absolute horrors of authoritarian rule."

"Let me end by appealing to the leadership in China to show the courage to allow the continued prosperous democratic autonomy enjoyed by the people of Hong Kong. Hong Kong’s continued special status is the sign of strength and confidence, not weakness."

U.S. Senators James Risch and Ben Cardin on Hong Kong Democracy and Human Rights Act

"China has gradally chipped away at Hong Kong’s autonomy, and this is now becoming a real problem.

China now refers to its treaty with Great Britain as ‘‘a historical document,’’ and says it is no longer bound by its terms. This is just one of many examples that show that the Chinese Government has no respect for the rule of law.

After two decades of broken commitments, it is past time that we hold the Chinese Communist Party accountable. What it is doing in Hong Kong is just wrong."

U.S. Senator Josh Hawley on Hong Kong Democracy and Human Rights Act: Communist China's ambition to impose their will on the entire international system

"we are in for a long struggle with Communist China. We are in for a long struggle with Beijing. We know what their ambitions are: to dominate Hong Kong, to dominate Taiwan, to dominate the region and, ultimately, to impose their will on the entire international system. We are going to have to stand against that for freedom, for liberty, for our security and our prosperity.

So there is much to do. There is a long road ahead of us, but today is a good day, and I hope the people of Hong Kong will see that the people of the free world are awake, that they are with you, and we are ready to stand together."

#Speech by Dr. Chung Kim-wah on the Suppression of Academic Freedom

Dr. Chung cited the police siege of three universities in Hong Kong and the change made to the university management after the umbrella movement as evidence to the authorities influence of scholaristic freedom. He said that the academic environment is becoming difficult in Hong Kong, as he wasn't even given a chance to hold conferences to exchange ideas.

Meanwhile, he was not convinced by the ongoing closure of the PolyU campus at the moment, although the University management had previously claimed that dangerous goods were present inside the campus and that staff needed time to remove the goods.

He voiced support for young people, including those in prison or being held in custody due to the movement, and he hoped Hong Kongers would not give up and continue to fight for rights and freedom inside and outside the Councils. He encouraged participants of the movement, valiant and peaceful, to join hands and stay as one.

Taiwan is a true friend for Europe and the World
Stephane Corcuff, a scholar at the Lyon School of Political Science in France, posted a video on Facebook on the 8 April, emphasizing that Taiwan unconditionally donates masks to European countries without diplomatic relations and is a true friend of Europe. He called on the government to give a helping hand to Taiwan, not to let her to face China's suppression alone.

U.S. State Secretary Pompeo: "The Chinese Communist Party lies, and makes those who tell the truth disappear"

U.S. Secretary Pompeo delivered remarks at the Czech Senate, in Prague, Czech Republic, on August 12, 2020.

In his remarks, Secretary Pompeo indicated:

“It’s not tanks and guns. It’s very different from that. The CCP initiates retaliation against innocent parties when crossed. It infamously canceled the PFK Philharmonica’s trip to Beijing for something as simple as the mayor’s efforts to deepen ties with Taiwan. Shanghai cancelled its cooperation with Prague after this city signed a sister-city agreement with Taipei.”

“The CCP leverages economic power to coerce countries. Recall that the Chinese embassy in Prague sent a letter to your former senate president, who had hoped to visit Taiwan. Your free press did amazing work and reported on this strong-arming. The letter read as follows. It said, quote, ‘Czech enterprises with economic interests in China will have to pay,’ end of quote. This is deeply inconsistent with each of our values. The CCP lies, and makes those who tell the truth disappear.”

“Your senate president will make that trip to Taiwan later this month, fulfilling the wishes of his late predecessor. Good on him. Know too – know too that America is supporting you and will always do it.”

HK Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma: Judicial Independence Must Be Separated from Politics, No One is Above the Law

The issue of separation of powers has sparked intense debate in Hong Kong as the authorities and Beijing loyalists refused to acknowledge its practice in Hong Kong.

In his speech at the ceremonial opening of Hong Kong Legal Week 2020, Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal Geoffrey Ma reiterated the importance of not politicizing the independent judiciary and court. As clearly stated in the Basic Law, Hong Kong enjoys independent judicial power, including that of final adjudication. This means no one is above the law, nor can one interfere with court decision. All adjudications must comply strictly with the law, and uphold the principles of equality, equity and fairness.

Geoffrey Ma also pointed out that the rule of law had always been an important core value of Hong Kong, which warranted careful protection, and society could not bear the risk of losing it.

He asked the public to dismiss misconceptions and misunderstanding about rule of law in order to protect it. He believed that law should be predictable, stable and clear, and judicial decision should be open to the public.

Ma stated that according to the Basic Law, the non-permanent judges of the Court of Final Appeal and lawyers from other common law jurisdictions could practice in Hong Kong.

Xi Jinping Is Using Party Outreach to Build an Anti-U.S. Bloc

On July 6, Chinese President Xi Jinping gave a keynote speech at the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and World Political Parties Summit, proclaiming the CCP “is willing to continue to work with parties and political organizations of all countries.” As with other Beijing-led forums, the CCP is using this summit as an opportunity to promote its own foreign-policy objectives, including creating a less liberal democratic world order. But Xi’s messaging at the summit, now held for the fourth time, has evolved; whereas before it focused on cooperation and development, today China is looking to build a political bloc directed against the United States and other liberal democracies.
