'Our souls are dead': how I survived a Chinese 're-education' camp for Uighurs

The man on the phone said he worked for the oil company, “In accounting, actually”. His voice was unfamiliar to me. At first, I couldn’t make sense of what he was calling about. It was November 2016, and I had been on unpaid leave from the company since I left China and moved to France 10 years earlier. There was static on the line; I had a hard time hearing him.

“You must come back to Karamay to sign documents concerning your forthcoming retirement, Madame Haitiwaji,” he said. Karamay was the city in the western Chinese province of Xinjiang where I’d worked for the oil company for more than 20 years.

Uyghur American: I Was Born in a Chinese Reeducation Camp. I Will Always Fight China's Lies.

My mother gave birth to me while in captivity in China. On that day, in that prison called a reeducation camp, I don’t imagine that she could have envisioned the life I would eventually lead.

She could not have known I would obtain a law degree at American University, serve as vice chair for the U.S. Commission of International Religious Freedom, or receive the inaugural Notre Dame Prize for Religious Liberty. But while she may not have seen my future, I do know she had a dream for my life. She dreamt I would live in freedom and that her children’s children would grow up without the heavy burden of traumatic life experiences like torture, silencing or imprisonment.

I have the same dream for my fellow Uyghurs.

Hong Kong toes party line on Taiwan as Chinese diplomat threatens 're-education'

Senior officials in Hong Kong's new administration have been lining up to show their loyalty to the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) by condemning U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, as U.K. lawmakers were reportedly planning their own Taiwan trip.

"The Hong Kong ... government has unwavering determination in and a clear stance against any advocacy of 'Taiwan independence', and fully supports the central government's resolute determination in safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity," Hong Kong chief executive John Lee said in a statement on the government's website.
