The following is excerpted from an article written by Hong Kong pro-democracy activist in exile and former lawmaker Nathan Law and published on Washington Post on Jan 8, 2021.
//This mass crackdown shows Beijing is not afraid of showing its teeth and acting like a thug. It will not stop until it has eliminated all opposing voices in Hong Kong. There is no chance for coexistence — and it’s time the international community recognized that.
...One of the major reasons the Chinese Communist Party has unashamedly dared to tear off the mask of promises it had given Hong Kong is the international community’s inaction. Because of China’s ever-growing economic machine, many democratic countries have turned a blind eye to its human rights record; they may talk the talk diplomatically, but refuse to walk the walk.
...What we need for the people of Hong Kong, and democracy in general, is the determination to put human rights above trade interests. We need concrete policies that hold the authoritarian CCP accountable. Statements of concern and condemnation are not enough — and trade or investment agreements with autocracies are even worse. For Beijing, these signatures on agreements are green lights to continue their actions with impunity. The European Parliament should resolutely reject the investment deal to demonstrate leadership in the fight against authoritarianism.
On the other side of the world, the Biden administration should continue to consolidate the transatlantic cooperation to combat China’s authoritarian expansion. Global issues, such as public health and climate change, should be seen as ways to boost cooperation between democracies and pressure authoritarian regimes. The incoming administration should not fall into the trap of believing the CCP’s empty promises. Constraining the CCP’s expansion should be a priority of all of the free world.
…It’s time for the world to stand up and defend our shared universal values with them, not with feeble words but with real actions, shoulder to shoulder.//

On Jan 6, 2021, the Hong Kong authorities launched the largest crackdown on the pro-democracy camp since the implementation of the National Security Law in June 2020. The Hong Kong Police Force arrested 53 pro-democracy figures including former lawmakers, current district councillors, campaigners, lawyer and scholars, all in one day.

51 of them were detained overnight for over 40 hours before they were bailed on the evening of Jan 8, 2021
Democractic Party member Wan Siu-kin, formerly lawmaker and currently serving as a district councilor in Kwai Tsing, said the police had record his testimony on video for 3 times, with officers from the national security bureau handling the final recording.
During the process, the police showed him a newspaper cutting, which read "Ten Steps to 'Laam Chaau' [literally meaning, stir fry together]" and asked if Wan knew about it, and who said it.
Wan said the police also showed three short recordings about the legislative primaries that took place in July 2020. To his understanding, the officers from the national security bureau only handed the short recordings to other police officers on the same day and in a hurry.
Wan had the impression that everything was "done in a rush" and that it "felt as though the motive was to confiscate (his) passport".

Part 1
Dr. #ArisinaMa Chong-yee, President of Hong Kong Public Doctors' Association (PDA) has always been vocal about controversial political issues such as police brutality, community-wide COVID19 test and gathering bans. Although applauded by many, she has also been spitefully criticized by pro-establishment supporters.
Ma admitted that she has had thoughts about running away or even “disappear”. Driven by her personality, she decided to step forward instead and stand for the Medical Council elections during this tough times.
Last December, Arisina Ma and two other doctors were elected to the PDA, which has been said to be a landslide victory for pro-democracy influence in the Association.
Ma is foresees tougher challenges like complaints against doctors, recruitment of overseas or Chinese doctors, etc in the coming year.
When reporters called her “The President chosen by the times” last year, she did not realise how revolting the challenges were going to be.
Ma expressed, “2020 has been a daunting year for Hongkongers, who had to endure immeasurable amounts of pain and sorrow. We are the generation chosen by the times. I cannot understand why some people are still sparing their time to talk about travel bubble, partake in hundred-people birthday party, or enjoying themselves in dance groups at this difficult juncture. I think 2020 was a gloomy and painful year, and the year ahead is going to be another heavy one.”

If she was not elected as the President of Hong Kong Public Doctors' Association (#PDA), Dr #ArisinaMa would have remained as an ordinary specialist for the elderly at a public hospital.
When asked if she had any regrets, Ma responded with a smile. She said that this is “personality decided destiny”. It is a one-way journey of which there is no time for regrets.
“This is fate. Too many things have happened this year, and frankly speaking, I don’t have much time to look back and reflect. Like many Hongkongers, our fast-paced lives leave us with no time to reflect and no time to regret.”
“Perhaps in the next couple of decades, doctors will still be making a good living. As for the “yes-men”, will they still be living in Hong Kong?
She has no regrets over this "personality decided fate".
“I think our society has become increasingly polarizing, where justice and evil, friends and foes are clearly set apart from each other. With my personality, it is easy for me to choose which side to stand on.
“Justice is everything, yet it has been ruthlessly challenged during our current times. In the face of these challenges, I can only stand on the side where I think is right.”
As a doctor, I wish to make a mark with my contributions during these troubled times.
“Hong Kong is facing a shortage of resources, inadequate services and a dearth in social welfare. Although I cannot drive wide-ranging societal changes like a politician, I still hope that I can make an impact to slow down the declining standards in medical services.

Ben Chan, vocal singer of a local band Boyz Reborn was accused of possession of tools for illegal use as he was carrying a laser pen on the day of a citywide anti-mask ban protest on 6 October 2019.
Ben appeared at the court on Friday, Jan 8, 2021 and was acquitted of the count. Band members, their manager, and Chan’s girlfriend, former Demosistō member Ho Ka-yau, hugged Ben as he was released upon acquittal.
Ben expressed his relief and said he was stressed and worried that having to be in and out of the court might affect his future plans in music and his studies. He was also worried about the possibility of being absent from the upcoming band concert and bringing more work to the band members if he was found guilty.
Ben was thankful to the court’s fair judgement, and reminded Hong Kongers to keep other comrades in mind. “There are still much unfairness in Hong Kong. A lot of comrades are still facing lawsuits, while some are already in jail. I hope Hong Kongers would keep paying close attention to them and never give up on the fight for freedom”

In the largest rioting case related to the 2019 Anti-ELAB protests, 21 citizens have been sentenced to jail terms between 30 months and 42 months for rioting. They were charged for taking part in the clashes that took place in Sheung Wan on July 28, 2019.
The defendants are aged between 19 and 40, seven of whom were students.
District Court judge Johnny Chan handed down the sentences on Jan 8, 2022 on the 21 defendants.
Chan said protesters’ gear and equipment demonstrated that they had come prepared, and so a riot was not unexpected.
[Editor's note: On July 28, 2019, crowds gathered in Sheung Wan to protest the police inaction during the previous week's 7.21 Yuen Long Attack, which was widely seen as tolerating and even condoning the mob violence against civilians. In an article published on January 6, 2022, Ta Kung Pao, a China-owned newspaper printed in Hong Kong, accused Wu Rwei-ren, a political science scholar affiliated with Academic Sinica in Taiwan of violating Hong Kong's national security law.
The pro-Beijing newspaper made its claim based on an essay Wu wrote in February 2020, before the National Security Law was passed on June 30, 2020. The essay received the Human Rights News Award of the Hong Kong Journalists Association in 2021.
Wu responded that following the crackdown on independent news outlets like Stand News and Citizen News in Hong Kong, Beijing is trying to threaten international scholars who support Hong Kong.
