Christmas Eve Along the Waters: Hongkongers Fight On

On Christmas eve, in Tsim Sha Tsui several LED signs that read "#Save12" were displayed, attracting passersby to take photos.

Following Beijing's forceful enforcement of the national security law, the cancellation of the Legistive Election and disqualifications of elected lawmakers, human rights, the rule of law and the freedoms promised in the Sino British Joint Declaration and the Basic Law have been massively destroyed in 2020.

In addition to the authorities' arrests and political prosecution of countless pro-democracy Hongkongers every day, the 12 Hong Kong youths were still detained in China since their captivation by the Chinese coast guard in August 2020.

Cardinal Zen Encourages People to Do What They Can

On Christmas Eve of 2020, Cardinal #JosephZen of the Catholic Church in Hong Kong released a video statement through the Justice and Peace Commission of HK Catholic Diocese (#HKJP).

In the video, Zen talked about how many people dared not to express happiness these days. The coronvirus pandemic seemed to get more and more severe, making human feel minute.

Without naming anyone, Zen describes that there were some people in this world who enjoyed seeing others suffer and were unhappy to see others being happy. These people made others live in fear. In chaotic times, we do see evil from many people, but we can also find love from many others.

"Many of our brothers and sisters are facing great adversity, but they are at peace. I was moved every time I visit the prison. Let light shine on us, and then we will have the courage to help, illuminate and comfort others," said Zen.

Zen encouraged people to do what they can, "We now dare not go out, but sometimes it is needed. No one can afford to be selfish."

Hong Kong Writer #ChipTsao: "This is the first Black Christmas in Hong Kong since 1941"

Chip Tsao is a Hong Kong-based columnist, commentator, and writer. This is what he wrote for #Christmas2020 :

"Before the Change, on Christmas Days in the past, Hong Kong didn’t have the Virus, the group gathering ban and the HKSAR government.

This is the first Black Christmas in Hong Kong since 1941.

Christmas is a Christian festival about our belief in God. Perhaps we have forgotten the meaning behind Christmas; which is why the Virus is spreading worldwide.

Hang in there, even life is tough. More turmoil and risk are expected in 2021. Hope everyone is cautious and think carefully. Merry Christmas and be safe."

Hong Kong Reverend Lo Hing-choi, "We resonate with the Jews who were ruled by foreigners; God will not let darkness take control forever"

Reverend Lo Hing-choi, the chairman of the Baptist Convention of Hong Kong, released an article titled "Light will shine in dark" on #ChristmasEve2020.

Lo reread the Book of Isaiah from the Old Testament, which recounted how the Kingdom of Judah fell into the hands of the Assyrian Empire.

Lo wrote: "We resonate with the Jew who were controlled by foreigners. Losing one's autonomy is a painful thing. Living in your own land but following the orders of foreigners is hard to accept."

Despite the Jews at that time had lived in darkness, "God's promise is not an anesthetic, but a motivation to drive history forward." Today many people are surrounded by darkness, but Lo wanted to tell those in darkness that "light will shine in dark and God will not let darkness take control forever".

Hongkonger: "Freedom is like air. You'd only know it’s priceless when you lose it and begin choking"

Kevin Cheng is a Hong Kong-based photographer. This is his contemplation for the Christmas in Hong Kongin 2020:

"On the Christmas Day last year, riot police intruded into shopping malls, firing tear gas and arresting people indiscriminately.

On the Christmas Day this year, police patrolled in the streets to bar people from having Christmas dinner, singing Christmas carols in the street and viewing the Christmas lights. There were no more overnight public transportation services.

Freedom is like air. You'd only know it’s priceless when you lose it and begin choking."

On Christmas Eve, there was candlelight on the CUHK campus, sorrowing where the Goddess of Democracy is

The annual June 4th candlelight vigils in Victoria Park that had been banned for two consecutive years has "reappeared" in the Chinese University in Hong Kong (#CUHK) on Christmas Eve, following authorities deliberate removal of the statue of the Goddess of Democracy overnight.

The statue which had been placed on the university campus for 11 years, was suddenly removed without a word of warning on December 24, a day after the Pillar of Shame was dismantled in the University of Hong Kong (#HKU) on December 23.

After lunch time, some students used dozens of pictures of the Goddess of Democracy statue to recreate the statue of Goddess of Democracy in CUHK.

Graduates and citizens even seen presenting flowers to the "new" statue in a bid to express their grief.

In the evening, they lit small candles that pieced together the appearance of “June 4th”, “democracy”, and “Goddess of Democracy”. It looked as if the long-lost candlelight vigils - held in remembrance of victims of June 4th massacre in Beijing - has actually "reappeared" on the campus of CUHK on Christmas Eve this year.

Brandon, a CUHK student, expressed that the statue of Goddess of Democracy symbolized not only the “June 4th incident”, it was also an indicator of freedom of speech and political climate in the university and the society at large.

He said the students knew that the school will remove the statue of Goddess of Democracy when HKU removed the Pillar of Shame. They believed it fell beyond the control of the university management.

“However we didn't expect that the statue literally disappeared overnight," added Brandon in distress.

Hong Kong Lingnan University removes Tiananmen Massacre relief citing legal and safety concerns

On December 24, 2021, Lingnan University (#LU) was the third University in Hong Kong to tear down monuments commemorating the victims of the 1989 June 4th Tiananmen Massacre from their campuses on two consecutive days before Christmas.

The removals came one day after the University of Hong Kong (#HKU) dismantled the Pillar of Shame during the night of December 23, 2021

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) removed the Goddess of Democracy statue from its campus in the early morning of December 24, whilst Lingnan University took off a Tiananmen Massacre relief citing safety and legal issues on the same day.

The student union expresses "deep regret for the university’s unilateral decision to remove the monument, with no communication with the students." They also "strongly condemn the move by the university to obliterate the historical symbol.”

The relief was created by Chinese-born New Zealand sculptor Chen Weiming in May 2009 – portrayed iconic scenes of the student-led democracy movement in Beijing which was forcefully clamped down by the People’s Liberation Army on June 4, 1989. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, died.

The art piece had shown the “Tank Man” image where an unnamed individual stood in front of a line of tanks, as well as impressions of citizens rushing injured protesters to the hospital on bicycles.

Some students said theu knew the removal of the relief by Lingnan University was coming; while some were surprised that it took place just a day after HKU removed another monument, the Pillar of Shame, overnight on Thursday.

More attempts to crackdown memories of the June 4th Massacre in Hong Kong Universities

In Hong Kong, three universities have taken haste actions to remove historic monuments and statues - all related to the 1989 June 4th Tiananmen Massacre - before Christmas day.

It started with #HKU Dismentaling the #PillarofShame over midnight on December 23, 2021.

On December 24, 2021, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#HKU) and the Lingnan University (#LU) removed the Goddess of Democracy statue and a Tiananmen Massacre relief on their campuses overnight.

In the City University of Hong Kong (#CityU), the acting president of the Students' Union, Mark Tse Man-Hei told local media that the Union has received a verbal warning from school authorities.

The warning letter asked for the Goddess of Democracy statue to be removed the soonest, saying that its display would be deemed a violation of “#NationalSecurityLaw”.

CUHK Policy Regarding Goddess of Democracy Changes Following 11 Years of Tolerance

Following HKU’s removal of the Pillar of Shame from school grounds, CUHK had removed the Goddess of Democracy statue located within school grounds on #Dec24 midnight.

According to the university’s statement, the university “never authorised the display of the statue on its campus”, and claimed that the University’s Administrative and Planning Committee had unanimously resolved to not approve the request from the Chinese University Student Union to display the statue on its campus, and that “its opposition and principles are on the public record”.

However, it must be noted that former Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK Joseph Sung Jao-yiu had sent an open letter dedicated to the university’s staff, students, and alumni, explaining the stance of the university regarding its policy when handling the Goddess of Democracy.

Sung had stated that the university had suggested the Student Union display the statue in Cultural Square, with the Union in charge of maintaining the statue, while departments within the University would provide assistance when necessary.

“Due to [Cultural Square] being near where the Student Union is located at, it would be easier for its members to maintain the statue, compared to placing it outside the University MTR station.”

Sung had also stated that, “CUHK has always been defending its freedom of speech and academic freedoms, and has been opened to different views and opinions. When dealing with the ‘New Goddess of Democracy’, we aim at following the same principles.”

Universities in Hong Kong Dismantle June 4th Tiananmen Commemorative Symbols: "A Christmas Present for Beijing"

On December 24, 2021, the Management of the Hong Kong Lingnan University (#LU) removed and destroyed a commemorative relief of the 1989 June 4th Tiananmen Massacre that was installed on campus since 2010, without any notice and conscent from the students.

The action coincided with the dismantling of other commemorative statue and sculpture by two other universities in Hong Kong right before Christmas day.

According to the vice-chair of external affairs of the 43th Student Union of the Hong Kong Lingnan University, Tang Kin-Wah, the relief and the statue of the Goddess of Democracy arrived in Hong Kong in 2010. Under the coordination of the Federation of Students and the Alliance, the two commemorative structures had exhibition tour in all universities in Hong Kong, starting with the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) and ending in the Lingnan University.

Back in 2010, after discussing with the university management, the student union at Lingnan University handed in a plan stating that they hoped to preserve the relief permanently on campus. Later on, the Student Union was allowed to restore the relief and convened a permanent installation ceremony with the help of the university management. The ownership of the relief belongs to the Student Union.

After the University managemeng secretly and forcefully removed the relief on Christmas' eve on 2021, some alumni made a trip back and placed white flower on the now-empty site. They described the act as an "assignment" that the university president Cheng Kwok-hon "turned in" to Beijing. "It is his [Cheng's] Christmas present for the Central Government at the end of 2021," the alumni mocked.
