Tencent’s WeChat cuts off service in India amid the country’s ban on Chinese apps

//Tencent and other Chinese app operators have had no option but to fall in line with India’s ban, at a time when they also find themselves under increasing pressure from the Trump administration in the US over privacy and censorship issue

//India on Monday banned 47 more Chinese apps after blocking 59 others over privacy and national security concerns, according to an information ministry official and media reports.

//“We value each of our users, and data security and privacy are of utmost importance to us,” the notice said. “We are engaging with relevant authorities and hope to be able to resume service in the future.”

//Some affected Indian users reached out to WeChat’s Twitter account for help.

//Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington could sanction Chinese social media apps, including TikTok and WeChat, over privacy issues and potential national security risks.

//That has sparked anxiety among many overseas Chinese who use WeChat to keep in touch with family and friends back home, as well as many western companies and individuals who use the app for business.

//The ban came on the back of online protests calling for people in the vast South Asian country to boycott a range of Chinese-made goods, from apps to smartphones, after a deadly skirmish between the Indian Army and Chinese troops along the two nations’ disputed Himalayan border on June 15.

//While there are many uncertainties about the ban, particularly about how it will be enforced in the long term, other affected Chinese app providers have also moved to comply with the Indian government’s directive, including removing their presence in app stores.

This is too scary, the era of big data, I...

Editor’s note: From the internet censorship to facial recognition and more recently, the health code, China has been establishing policies to control the human behaviour of Chinese people. However, cannot hold the fire, it is possible that Chinese people ,like the one who posted the above concern to the internet, are going to have more doubts about the Chinese apps, the monitoring and the Chinese government.

(16 Aug) This could be the most horrifying photo I have seen recently!

I have heard people say that Taobao may monitor the keyboard, search history and even sound [from microphone] for big data analysis and goods recommendation. I was doubtful about this and thought that maybe it is possible, but not to that god-like extend...

But the fact has exceeded my imagination!

The 25kg skimmed formula powder... My god... Even without asking we know that this is not any common product...

Yesterday I bought a chair and the seller packed the chair with this bag [of the 25kg formula powder]. With no verbal description, no taking of photos, no word-typing, under zero actions [regarding the packaging], today my Taobao homepage recommended me product in the same packaging!

I then recalled the memory. Yesterday, the only action related to Taobao was when I was installing the chair, I opened up Taobao and bought other goods on the website. Does that mean that when I opened up the Taobao page, my camera was working? Was it scanning the image beside me?!

Trump Signed an Executive Order to ban 8 Mobile Apps Transactions, Including Alipay and Wechat Pay

Donald Trump signed an executive order on 5 Jan local time banning transactions of 8 Chinese-related mobile apps, including Alipay and Wechat pay. The ban will take effect in 45 days.

The Trump government has not yet announced the contents of the order. However, Steve Herman, a reporter of the Voice of America who stationed in the White House, posted on Twitter that the prohibited transaction mobile apps include Alipay, Wechat pay, CamScanner, QQ wallet, SHAREit, Tencent QQ, VMate and WPS Office.

Donald Trump pointed out that the apps may be able to obtain personal and sensitive information of users via mobile devices, tablets and computers. The collected data may have a chance for the Chinese government to “track the position of Federal Government staff and contract staff and set up personal message files”. According to The Wall Street Journal, the order instructs the Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross to assess whether other software constitutes threats to the US national security. The order also requests the Secretary of Commerce, the Head of Justice Department and the Director of National Intelligence to publish suggestions to prevent US user data being transferred to the hands of the overseas opponents.
