An open letter from 11 protestors in detention to all comrades still resisting in Hong Kong

Firstly, we would like to thank 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund and Spark Alliance for their legal support for our comrades in detention.

Here, I briefly introduce the 11 comrades who joined forces to write this letter. Among them are comrades arrested on the day of the stampede in Mongkok; during the strikes in November and December; during the siege at Polytechnic University; and some other comrades whose identities need to be kept anonymous, in order to protect them.

I put together the thoughts of 10 comrades and wrote this letter, which was delivered circuitously so that you may hear our thoughts. I hope you can spare a few minutes and read this letter.

Seven comrades who watched the battles at the Chinese University and Polytechnic University unfold but could not be present expressed 'survivor's guilt', for they were not able to stand and fall with the rest. I burst into tears after seeing the front pages of Apple Daily on November 19th and 21st which read, “Comrades wanted to have pizzas as they feared it would be their last meal”. It made me wonder how much stress they must have been going through to be speaking in this manner.

On December 15th, though protests blossomed in different districts, it was saddening to see what happened in Sha Tin and Mongkok. Passers-by were charged with unlawful assembly; MTR stations turned into dungeons of tear gas; and shopping malls were turned into battlefields…yet again. NOW News recorded in clear footage police firing tear gas canisters at a reporter, with his yellow vest on and clearly indicating his identity. He suffered a concussion as a result. They also recorded footages of how tear gas was used in streets where only residents of local neighbourhood stood. These scenes will forever be etched in our hearts and our minds.

We often hear of the police’s relentless pursuit of our dear comrades. If you may allow me to speak on behalf of the 10 comrades, I would like to tell all of you that we do not wish to see more comrades sacrifice. Also, everyone please be on guard. Please do not let the blood, sweat, tears shed by us be in vain.

We hope that you will not give up, no matter what. He who perseveres till the end, wins. Our bodies may be bound, but our minds must always be free.

Five demands, not one less.
Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our time.

We hereby wish all who take part in the resistance safety and health. We also wish Alex (Chow Tsz Lok) a peaceful life in another place.

A letter to the pro-democracy councilors from protesters in detention:

We are a group of detainees at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre, who have fought for liberty and freedom in Hong Kong. We are now imprisoned, have lost our freedom, are separated from our loved ones and are sacrificing our youth and future. Our young comrades in Pik Uk Prison are facing far greater torment than we are. There are also more than 6,000 other arrested protesters.

Alhough we can no longer contribute at the frontlines to Hong Kong's road to democracy, we executed what little power we had left in the last District Council election: our votes. When we knew of the landslide victory for pro-democracy candidates winning 85% of the seats, we were in a wave of euphoria. We hope the elected pro-democracy candidates will take opportunity of this bitter sweet victory to help the 6000-plus arrested protestors, who are paying a costly price for Hong Kong.

We ask all elected pro-democracy candidates to pressure the government for a response to our demands, including engaging in dialogue with the government for leniency on arrested protesters; organizing mass protests and assemblies to express solidarity with the arrested comrades; holding press conferences; and all efforts that can help and free our comrades.

We hear about the demands for amnesty for some of us. However we hope to stick together. The government should be pressed to reduce sentences so that our comrades can regain freedom sooner, thus go back to their loved ones, work and studies. We will then keep a low profile and prepare ourselves for the future.

We understand Hong Kong is still a long way from having true democracy. We ask all elected pro-democracy candidates not to let down the people of Hong Kong, or to rest on your laurels. Remeber "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times" is not an empty slogan. It represents the struggles we have gone through – we give our best, put behind what we have and forward we march. The road to democracy is built with our blood and sweat. There is a saying: “what millions died—that Caesar might be great!” Not a single one of our comrades should be expendable.

In solidarity with detainees at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre.

An unmerry Christmas: A letter from detained comrades in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre

Received a lot of Christmas cards. This is the darkest and gloomiest Christmas since the handover of Hong Kong. Yet you have given us hope and warmth. We will not stop and will keep protesting using our letters and words. We will rebound and grow from strength to strength. “Fight on as comrades, each in our own way!”

Stop saying you failed us; it’s the government who did. Stop saying you owe us too much. Each and every one of us has made an effort. It’s the government who owes us. Stop saying you are a “good-for-nothing middle-aged” or a “good-for-nothing elderly”. You are not worthless, it’s the government who never does anything well. Stop calling us heroes, for this title goes to each and every true Hongkonger. Do not forget who compels us to resort to protests, and who puts us behind bars. Who is still acting against Hongkongers’ will? We must hold those who started all these accountable. We must pursue justice till the end. We have done nothing wrong. We must hold the instigators accountable.

We have tried different means (to express our demands) in the past six months, only to find that the government is unrepentant. We should set a deadline for the following actions:

1. to paralyse each and every government department;
2. to organise mass strikes;
3. to boycott classes and schools.

Tell the world and international communities: If the Hong Kong government does not respond to our five demands and investigate police brutalities, Hongkongers will keep fighting till the end.

Fight on as comrades, Each in our own way! No breaking off, No splitting, No snitching! Five demands, Not one less! Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our time! Come a day will we meet at the LegCo Demonstration Area with no face masks!
Hongkongers, Revenge!

An Open Letter from a Hong Kong Protester in Exile

To Hongkongers who are in exile, about to stand trial, or still fighting on the streets (especially minors and those who have just come on age):

Coming-of-age is unlike instant noodles or microwave food. It cannot be achieved in a snap.

History tells us, no one shall rape, no one shall kill.

As it turns out, eloquent people wield words at each other.

This is the new warfare of modern times.

No one heeds their own bleeding hearts.

Please, know the wounds in your heart, love yourself.

If you know not how, ask your parents,
What they cried for when they were small.

Please allow yourself to be angry!

From: A Hongkonger in exile, born in 1997

(My favourite song: “We shall overcome”)

A Clarification Letter from “Condom Lad” at Pik Uk Prison

Sometime last month, a comrade detained at Pik Uk Correctional Institution (PUCI) identified as “Condom Lad” wrote an open letter saying he could not let go of his concerns about the movement activities outside and asked everyone not to forget those detained at Pik Uk and other prisons. Subsequently, Condom Lad received a number of letters pleading with him to stop calling himself a “condom”, saying comrades will never be condoms (in the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill “Anti-ELAB” Movement, the word “condom” describes someone was used and disposed). Condom Lad asked me to help clarify a misunderstanding about his pseudonym.

A “Thank You” Letter From a Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Protestor who was detained for 146 days

"First of all, I would like to thank everyone. On the 19th of this month (February), I was granted parole at the West Kowloon Court. Without your help, I may not be out at all. Yesterday was the 19th, and the original time for bail hearing was around 3:30pm. When it came to negotiating the conditions of bail, Barrister Kwok acting on my behalf, was racking his brains on how to achieve the best outcome for me. Many strategic changes were made to my bail conditions (bail bond was originally $ 50,000 plus another $50,000 was subsequently added)..."
