Amnesty International Hong Kong calls for public pressure to #save12HKYouth

Twelve Hongkongers, including pro-democracy activists, were arrested on 23 August 2020 by the Chinese coast guard for allegedly crossing the border between Hong Kong and China in secret in a speedboat. Held incommunicado, without access to their family and lawyers of their choice, they are at imminent risk of torture and other ill-treatment. Four family-hired lawyers from mainland China dropped the cases after they were threatened by authorities.

In response to the detention of the twelve, the Amnesty International Hong Kong launched a letter petition, asking Hong Kong citizens to use their voices to ensure:
1. the 12 Hongkong youths to meet their families and lawyers appointed by their families regularly and effectively.
2. The 12 Hongkong youths will not be subject to torture or other inhumane treatment.
3. The 12 Hongkong youths will be allowed to access to prescribed medication and medical treatment.

Citizens can either send petition letters directly to Yantian Branch of Shenzhen Public Security Bureau or mail it to the office of Amnesty International Hong Kong for collection and delivery to Chinese authorities.

UK MPs calling Dominic Raab to pressure China to #save12HKYouth, saying “This is a simple matter of natural justice.”

// More than 60 UK MPs and peers have written to Dominic Raab calling on him to demand the return of young Hong Kong activists detained in mainland China after attempting to flee to Taiwan by boat.

The parliamentarians warned of a profound chilling effect should Chinese authorities be allowed “to prosecute and imprison Hong Kong activists in the mainland with little outcry or response from the international community”.

The letter to Raab said: “In view of this, we ask that you call on Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam and your counterpart in Beijing to immediately ensure the return of the twelve activists to Hong Kong, to guarantee that they have legal representation of their choosing, contact with their families, and to ensure the young people access to necessary prescribed medication. //

An online assembly was called for on 25 October to sustain local and international attention in a bid to save these 12 pro-democracy youngsters from potential torture and oppression from Chinese authoritarianism.

In their own unique ways, more than 35 cities around the globe, including San Francisco, New York, Toronto, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Holland, and Sweden have showed their support to the detainees and their family members.

The 12 Hong Kong youths detained in Shenzhen is a watershed case for Hong Kong, which will influence whether the extradition of pro-democracy activists to stand trial in China becomes a common occurrence.

HK Police Repeatedly Harass Anti-ELAB Exhibition by Students, Citing Gathering Ban

As the world shows increasing concern and support for the 12 Hong Kong youths detained in China, activist group Student Politicism held a photo exhibition of the anti-ELAB movement. The exhibition was held on the streets of Tsuen Wan on Oct 24, hoping to generate more attention among Hong Kong people for the twelve detainees.

However, around 20 police officers cordoned off the exhibition kiosks and ticketed 7 civilians on the scene, claiming that they had breached the gathering ban. Police left after searching the personal belongings of two of the ticketed civilians.

Later, police officers encircled and cordoned off the kiosks again, also citing violations of the gathering ban. A total of 13 civilians and kiosk staff were fined.

Editor's Note: Student Populism is formed by high school students who met during last year’s protests against the now-withdrawn extradition bill. They now consist of 30 members from 20 schools; the youngest member is in the third year of high school.

CUHK Graduates March In Support Of 12 HK Youth

Today is the graduation ceremony of CUHK. Although the ceremony was organised online due to the coronavirus, over 50 graduates march from the Goddess of Democracy in CUHK and then across the campus in the afternoon to voice their support to the 12 Hong Kong youth being illegally detained in the mainland.

Apart from their graduation gown, some wore the Vedetta mask and held slogans. Others even held black balloons. The security guards of CUHK used megaphones to warn protestors that they may be in violation of the gathering ban, and order them to keep the social distance. Some even started to stop and frisk the graduates, but they didn’t stop the protests so far.

After Obtaining 50k Petitions, the German Parliament Agrees to Hold a Hearing on China Sanction, said German Hongkonger Glacier Kwong

In September, Glacier Kwong Chung-ching, a Hong Kong resident in German and a former spokesperson of the "Keyboard Frontline", an NGO advocated for Human rights on the Web, submitted a proposal to the petition committee at the German Parliament. The petition called on the German Bundestag to formulate policies and to impose sanctions on China for the Hong Kong National Security Law. Glacier Kwong has got 50,000 signatures for the petition and posted on Facebook today that she had received an official document from the German Parliament confirming her eligibility for the hearing but was yet to know the date. She intends to reflect issues such as the 12 Hong Kong people detained in the mainland, describing it one of the small steps to liberate Hong Kong.

She said that due to the pandemic lockdown in Germany, she could only hold the hearing after lockdown, at the start of next year as the earliest, but she believes that as long as the hearing is held before the German election next year, the result will not be too far off. She also hoped that the hearing would address issues such as the importance of rescuing the 12 Hong Kong people detained in the mainland, the remaining freedom in Hong Kong, and the crumble of its political system. She hoped that the committee members of the German Parliament would take a stand on the China issues and that the hearing would be one of the formal occasions to discuss before the German elections. She also hopes that more people would pay attention to the China problem, as well as the situation in Taiwan and Xinjiang.

Neon lights erected on Lion Rock Peak calling for Hongkongers to stand in solidarity with 12 pro-democracy activists detained in China

Braved the chilly winds for hours, several defiant pro-democracy youngsters climbed up the Lion Rock Peak tonight, and held up a neon sign signaling #Save12. They appeal to all who value human rights and justice to show solidarity with the detainees and their families.

Earlier today, the #save12HKyouth concern group hosted a press conference, in which they revealed that the detainees' families were asked to “plead guilty to protest charges in Hong Kong”.

The 12 Hongkongers were arrested by Chinese authorities on August 23 when they fled to Taiwan, fearing the draconian National Security Law. They have then been detained in Yantin District Detention Center for over 100 days without access to the legal representation organised by their families.
