Organiser of Dec 1 March Attended by 380+k People:
"Lest We Forget Our Original Cause”

In an interview, Swing, the organiser of march in Tsim Sha Tsui on December 1 explained that the purpose of the march is to remind fellow Hongkongers not to indulge in their minor victory in the District Counsel Election, but to remember what they have been fighting for all this time, especially the Five Demands. Therefore he named the protest “Lest We Forget Our Original Cause”.

Successfully holding a protest with no sponsors and no political background, Swing wished to emphasise the fact that every Hongkonger has the right to call for public assemblies and protests. He is grateful to his brothers and sisters from LIHKG forum for the success of the match.

Swing said that the attendance of 380 thousands delighted him. In the protest, 3 recording points were used to calculate the count: the Clock Tower (the start of March), the Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel, and the Hong Kong Coliseum (end of march). However, police charged in and conflicts aroused near the end of the march. Police even fired tear gas. Hence at 4pm, one hour after the protest began, the event was forced to cut short, and the data at the 3rd point might not be representative.

When discussing the possibility of personal legal liabilities, should things go wrong in the protest, Swing stated that he is not particularly worried, as there is already a risk of being arrested when citizens on streets are stopped and checked for their ID cards by officers. On the other hand, to avoid injuries for his fellow protestors, he chose to end the event early in face of possible dangers.

When asked if he has met with any difficulty, Swing pointed out that the biggest issue is trust. There was hardly any response on LIHKG forum, but discussion was more heated on other platforms. Getting help is another problem. He was only able to obtain equipment such as tents, tables and chairs on the day of the protest. To a first-timer like him, leading the crowd and shouting slogans were no easy tasks. He joked that he has thought of a slogan :”Five Demands have yet to come round, We are not going to f**king back down.” But his slogan was turned down by fellow protestors.

From farms and coal mines to airports and water supplies: How China is gobbling up millions of acres of land, vital infrastructure and companies - as part of its 'disturbing' plan to exert greater influence and control over Australia

Tim Murray of research firm J Capital: 'Long-term, China has always been interested in acquiring energy assets outside of the country'.

'They've got a basic view of "why not use someone else's resources before we use our own".'

This week - after claims China tried to plant a spy in Parliament - an expert said communist investment has blinded politicians to security threats.

Successive governments failed to crack down on Chinese interference because they were too focused on trade and investment, according to journalist and Lowy Institute fellow Peter Hartcher.

Speaking at the Centre For Independent Studies in Sydney on Thursday, Mr Hartcher said Australia has only just acknowledged that China poses a threat.

5 Heads of i-Cable News and Entire China News Team Resign En Masse Against Laying Off of Journalists

On Dec 1, 2020, i-Cable News laid off 40 employees with immediate effect, angering staff at the TV news station.

According to the source, the head of i-Cable China News Szeto Yuen was the first to protest by resigning, followed by the rest of the journalists on the team. In total, one journalist was fired, and the other ten on the team, including Szeto, quit in protest. Some members from other teams also resigned to protest against the company's decision.

A senior journalist told Stand News that they felt it was better to take action together and alert the public that i-Cable News had deteriorated, instead being slowly and quietly weakened. He added that it was not worth staying anymore, since the management has intervened in the reporting again and again.

After recent salary cuts, a few junior journalists were only earning around 13,000 HKD a month. Operations at i-Cable News has nearly ground to a halt on Dec 1, 2020.

An upper-mid-level manager said that the top management had not consulted any department heads about this round of firing. The video editors and graphic designers who were fired were widely praised for their abilities by their colleagues. Many of the fired staff played important roles in middle and senior management.

i-Cable China News had investigated corrupt practices in China many times, and followed up the situation of activists; the team was long regarded to be in high reputation.

They were among the few public broadcasters in Hong Kong with a dedicated team for China news; its 11 members, including the team leader, are responsible for the daily China news reporting and the night-time “China Report”. They also have journalists regularly stationed in Beijing and Guangzhou.

Their most visible reporting in recent years were the 2012 interview of pro-democracy activist Li Wangyang, who served the longest sentence among those from the 1989 Tiananmen protests.

After broadcasting the interview, Li died in Daxiang Hospital, where he was found dead and leaning against the window, with a rope wrapped around his neck, though his legs were touching the ground. The Chinese authorities initially reported that he committed suicide, but they later changed the conclusion to “accidental death”. This incident caused strong repercussions in Hong Kong, with over ten thousand Hongkongers marching in protest, believing that Li "had been suicided".

In 2017, journalist Lam Kin-Shing covered the memorial at sea for Liu Xiaobo by a group of dissenters, the event was broadcast on Facebook live. Afterwards, Liu’s friends were arrested by China police, and the driver hired by i-Cable China News was detained for three days. Lam was transferred back to Hong Kong and barred from reporting in China again; he resigned soon after.

At the early stage of the Wuhan Pneumonia outbreak last year, China News team sent journalists to Wuhan for investigation. They were among the very few Hong Kong media who sent journalists to Wuhan for on-site reporting.

Moreover, the iCable China News team's reporting had won many awards, including Human Right Press Award and awards in the School of Journalism and Communication in CUHK. Their award-winning programs included “Damage of Nuclear weapons tests”, “The land acquisitions incident of Wukan village”, “ Li Wangyang”, “Even China police are protesting”, “Decoding the future of 30 years later”, “Tiananmen massacre 30th year anniversary”, “Poison milk powder: 10 years later”.

More senior officials of HK Examinations and Assessment Authority resigned reportedly due to extreme political pressure

In May 2020, the history exam paper question from the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (#HKDSE) was harshly criticized by pro-Beijing figures. The question asked students to discuss whether Japan did more good than harm to China during the war years.

Soon after the PRC's Foreign Ministry condemned the question, calling it biased and off-limits, Hong Kong government's #EducationBureau pressured the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (#HKEAA), an independent organization, to strike out the question because it “seriously hurt feelings and dignity of the Chinese people who suffered great pain during the Japanese invasion of China”.

This incident was said to lead to resignation of Yeung Wing-yu, Manager of the Evaluation and Development Department of HKEAA and Secretary of the Committee on Subjects of the History Section in August 2020.

Before leaving the Authority, Yeung revealed to his colleagues that his resignation was due to extreme political pressure. He suspected that the series of seemingly coincidences were in fact vigilantly planned.

Yeung pointed out that the DSE question was leaked way before the examination day in May while the question’s marking scheme was leaked two months later in July. During this time, his social media account was being repeated hacked for at least twice.

After HKEAA’s decision to invalidate the question on Sino-Japanese relationship on 22 May, he personally covered up students’ answers to the question. Yeung considered the incident the biggest humiliation in his tenure in HKEAA.

Liberal studies is another subject furiously pounced by the SAR government. Lo Ka-yiu, Senior Manager of HKEAA responsible for Liberal Study was fluttered by pro-Beijing mouthpiece in Hong Kong for his pro-democracy opinion calling for the city’s Chief Executive to step down.

In May 2020, Lo and Leung Tsz-yin, a manager reported to him, both resigned. In September, two Liberal Studies teachers, Fan Si-kei and Lam Yi-mei, were appointed to replace Lo and Leung.

However, it was reported on December 5 that Lam Yi-mei resigned despite an extremely short tenure of less than three months.

Since May 2020, a number of senior officials of HKEAA has either resigned or their contracts not being renewed, including the Authority’s Secretary General, principal officer of Assessment Development, as well as Senior Manager and Manager responsible for Liberal Studies.

Most recently, HKEAA announced appointment of their new Secretary General Ngai Heung-tung, Professor of Economics of Lingnan University who again has profound Chinese background.

Australia set to pass new laws that provide powers to sanction human rights abusers

//Laws allowing Australia to slap sanctions on human rights abusers, cyber attackers and corrupt officials are set to be enshrined after passing the Senate.

The so-called Magnitsky style laws, which would allow the Australian government to directly target sanctions against individuals or entities, passed the upper house on Wednesday.

The reforms would allow financial sanctions to be imposed against perpetrators of serious human rights violations - without having to establish a country-specific approach.

Labor Senator Kimberley Kitching - who has advocated for the laws to be adopted - said the new powers were needed to punish human rights abusers and hold criminals to account.

"In a modern age of regimes run by the dregs of humanity (who) torture and jail and murder their own citizens ... if you believe in the dignity of human beings you can't allow such evil to go on unchallenged," she said.

The laws will be reviewed by a joint parliamentary committee after three years.//

Facebook takes down China-based network spreading false COVID-19 claims

//The parent company of #Facebook and #Instagram said on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, it has taken down more than 600 accounts, pages and groups connected to a Chinese influence operation spreading #COVID19 #disinformation, including an account purporting to be a fictitious Swiss biologist.

The China-based network was one of six #Meta, formerly know as Facebook, removed in November for abusing its platforms, a reminder that bad actors around the world are using social media to promote false information and harass opponents.

The China-based operation came to light after the company was alerted to an account purporting to be a Swiss biologist named Wilson Edwards (no such person exists). The account posted claims on Facebook and Twitter in July that the U.S. was pressuring World Health Organization scientists to blame China for the COVID-19 virus. The posts alleging U.S. intimidation soon appeared in Chinese state media stories.//

China Pushes 85% of Population Speaking Putonghua by 2025 Even Among Ethnic Minorities

The #PRCgovernment is stepping up efforts to popularize #Putonghua in China, claiming that the use of putonghua remains “unbalanced and inadequate” and needs to be improved to meet the demands of the modern economy.

For the first time, the #PRC government named the two Special Administrative Regions, #HongKong and #Macau, for the new policy.

On November 30, the General Office of the State Council issued a set of new policies on language for #PRC, “Opinions of the General Office of the State Council on Comprehensively Strengthening Language and Writing Work in the New Era (關於全面加強新時代語言文字工作的意見)”.

The policy stressed the importance of speaking and using a standardized language, saying that the authorities will “unswervingly" promote the usage among ethnic minorities and in rural areas.

It also set a goal for the national penetration rate of Putonghua to reach 85% by 2025. Along with the 2025 goal, the policy aims to make Putonghua virtually universal by 2035, including in rural areas and among #EthnicMinorities.

The media described the new order as an “aggressive push” to the Chinese regional dialects such as #Cantonese and #Hokkien under even greater pressure, along with #minority languages such as #Tibetan, #Mongolian and #Uyghur.

Critics have protested the changes to the education system and employment requirements that have steadily eroded the role of minority languages. They call it a campaign to eradicate cultures that do not conform with the dominant ethnic group.

19-year-old student files a civil claim against HK Police Force: It's a fight for justice

During the anti-ELAB movement in Hong Kong two years ago, a 19-year-old pro-democracy student, Pang Yue-him (彭裕謙) was arrested in #MongKok in November 2019 for possessing a #LaserPointer. Pang plead not guilty.

Without seeking legal representation, Pang took defence for himself in prosecution, reviewed the evidence, and cross-examined the witness in English. In June 2021, he won the court case and was acquitted.

Five months later, Pang filed a civil case at the #DistrictCourt on December 1, accusing the Hong Kong Police Force of disclosing incomplete, misleading and incorrect information which could be deemed “misrepresentation”. He claimed a remedy amounted to HK$520,000.

Handling the #CivilClaim case unrepresented, Pang openly acknowledged that the chance of winning the case is slim. He intended to carry on the court case as a fight for justice.
