University Graduates in HK Demostrate in Campus: "No Matter Life and Death, Live Up Expectations and Never Forget the Fight"

Part 1/3

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) graduation ceremony was originally scheduled on Nov 19, 2020. Due to the pandemic, it was held online.

Nearly 200 graduates initiated a demonstration in campus. They shouted slogans including “Liberate Hong Kong. Revolution of our times”, “Hong Kong Independence, the only way out” and “Remember the valiants. Release 12 HK youths”.

Some students held three fingers gesture and chanted, “Stand with Thailand”, to support pro-democracy protestors in Thailand.

When the march arrived at the “No. 2 Bridge”, where the police attacked the university last year, the graduates paid silent tribute for three minutes for all casualties in the pro-democracy movement.

The procession then walked back to the University Mall, the original venue for the graduation ceremony, and displayed banners, “Happy Graduation CU Rioters”, “No one is a winner in this revolution, but please stay to witness”, “Hong Kong Independence”. In the meantime, the graduates sang “Glory to Hong Kong” twice.

Some students encouraged those graduating students to uphold the spirit of the New Asia College anthem: “I'll proceed despite the hardships, my passion burns despite the weariness" (艱險我奮進,困乏我多情) and preserving humanistic beliefs. At last, they wish all graduates to have brilliant prospects.

When the parade passed “The Beacon” opposite of the CUHK library, the graduates re-enacted the Battle of CUHK last year by wearing halmets and gas masks, holding umbrellas, flags and a round table with the words “Sharp edges and corners, live up expectations” on it.

Some graduates displayed the names of 12 pro-democracy Hong Kong youths who were captured by Chinese authorities and detained in China since August 2020.

Part 2/3

“Big P” and “Little P”, wearing the Guy Fawkes' masks from the film Vendetta, are this year's graduates of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK).

On the Congregation Day on November 19, 2020, they went back to the campus with hundreds of graduates.

Big P brought white ribbon in memory of the casualties of pro-democracy protesters who defended the campus against the police's siege in 2019.

Little P added that the white ribbon is a symbol of commemoration not only for the Battle of CUHK, but also for the Defense War of Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU). Little P said, “No matter it is life and death, we miss them [pro-democracy protesters] all.”

Little P hopes to reiterate the original cause by participating in the demonstration on campus and that the march could ignite people’s will to fight, remind people of the valiant spirit and commemorate the Battle of CUHK.

One year after the police's siege of CUHK, Big P’s memory was still fresh. More memories and sentiments were recalled when visiting the photo exhibition organised by the CUHK Students’ Union last week.

To Big P, the most traumatic moment was when the pro-demoracy protestors were being arrested in CUHK. He reminded himself to keep up the fight and record the truth.

He also lamented, “nowadays, wearing a ribbon is considered as a resistance all because the authorities think you are going against them.”

Kwun Tong District Councillor Eason Chan Yik-Shun is also this year's graduates of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK).

He said that Hongkongers were unable to express their feelings toward the pro-democracy movement, since the police have prohibited all marches and rallies in the past six months.

Eason Chan hoped the march at CUHK on Nov 19, 2020 could bring enthusiasm to the fight for freedom in society and remind everyone that “the [pro-democracy] movement is not finished.”

Eason Chan pointed out that the young generation of Hong Kong lost all hope and confidence to the future, owing to police brutality and injustice imposed by the Department of Justice (#DOJ). However, he believed that Hongkongers would continue to fight: “This is our home. We'll die, if we stop.”

Chan emphasised, “Many young people still have committment to Hong Kong". Chan also pointed out that the graduates' participation in the march showed that they would continue to come out and are not scared of being arrested.

Some parents also participated in the march on Nov 19, 2020. Apple, the mother of a CUHK student, said that she couldn’t stand still and let the authorities suppress the youths.

“As a parent, I have to come out and back them [young people] up,” she said. She felt heartbreaking to see how the students had sacrificed for the fight for democracy in the past year and all the casualties in the movement.

Apple hopes that the next generation can "enjoy freedom and live in Hong Kong safely". She reiterated that one shod not give up the fight in Hong Kong in face of the suppression by the Chinese Community Party (#CCP).

One year after Democrats' Victory in District Council Election: HK Government Reinstalls Beijing Loyalists in Area Committee

In 2019 District Council Election, the pro-democracy camp in Hong Kong won a landslide victory; however, the directly elected district councillors have been facing retributive oppression and disfavor from the HKSAR government, as their discussions of certain issues have been banned and funding has been cut.

On the contrary, the defeated pro-Beijing party has received favorable treatment; the new-term Area Committee is unprecedentedly served by the lost pro-Beijing candidates instead of the incumbent councilors.

Though the Area Committee is not a statutory body, its functions highly overlap with the District Council's: government officials will attend the presentation and collect opinions there, at the same time it will receive funding for organizing local activities which helps nurturing the Committee members' regional connections. However, the Area Committee lacks transparency as the public will not be informed about the dates of meetings unless they check them at their local Committees.

Some District Councils have cancelled their appropriation budgets of the Committees to avoid the government using public money to fund its stalwarts. They also worried that the government's long-term and direct appropriation would pave the way for hollowing out the District Council with the Area Committee.

Chinese Communist Party leader Urges the World to Implement Controversial #HealthCode

According to China state broadcaster, Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping called on the world during the G20 summit for the implementation of a health code.

In Hong Kong alone, the Health Code proposal has sparked controversy for its potential infringement of privacy and freedom and issues with the collection and the storage of personal data by the authorities.

On November 19, 2020, Xi also said at the Apec CEO Dialogues that China must rely on a growth model driven by innovation while continuing to deepen so-called supply-side reforms.

Xi also said globalisation is "irreversible" and that China will not engage in "de-coupling".

Throughout 2020, China has come under criticism, particularly from the US, for the coronavirus outbreak.

Diane Francis: Trudeau fiddles as Beijing burns us

Canada is the only Five-Eye country that has not banned Huawei from its network. The Conservatives introduced a motion last week seeking to force Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to make a decision on Huawei in the next 30 days.

China has held two innocent Canadians hostage since 2018, as payback for the arrest of a Huawei executive on a U.S. extradition warrant. China has also abrogated billions in agricultural trade contacts with Canada. Yet the prime minister ignores the fact that four out of five Canadians want actions taken against China for these and other misdeeds.

Canada Promised for Receiving Hong Kong teenagers, but two Large Opposition Parties Call on Trudeau to Do More

After over a year of the Hong Kong “anti-extradition law” protest, the Canadian government finally introduced policies to assist Hongkongers immigrating to Canada. However, the new policies are mainly targeting at students, disappointing many Canadian opposition lawmakers who have been running around for Hongkongers. New Democratic Party member of Parliament Jenny Kwan described that the Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau was slow to respond, and the new policies are not favourable to Hongkongers who intend to apply for refugees. The opposition Conservative Party member Raquel Dancho requested the government that they should sanction the Chinese and Hong Kong officials who harm the Hong Kong human rights.

Canada introduced “resettlement policy for Hongkongers” on last Thursday (12th November), the Hong Kong teenagers who graduated in universities in the past five years can apply for a three-years Canada working visa. Teenagers only require to work for a year and to pass the language test for permanent residency application. However, there is no specific implementation date or timetable yet.

Jenny Kwan, a New Democratic Party Member who born in Hong Kong and migrated to Canada when she was 9, said that after the abolishment of opposition members of Hong Kong Legislative Council, the situation in Hong Kong has deteriorated. However, Trudeau only “announced” the policies launch five months after promising to help Hongkongers that the response was slow and felt very disappointed with that. “The implementation of the plan, which mainly focuses on helping students, will have to wait until next year. The Immigration Minister did not provide details nor mention whether the plan will help the teenagers who have been prosecuted by the National Security Law”.

US Senate Committee Suggests that the US Should Counter China with Europe, Accusing China from Harming Other Countries’ Interests

The United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations published a report on Wednesday (Nov 18) stating that the best way for the US to counter the growing influence of China was to work with the European allies. The report further criticizes China for insisting its status as a developing nation in the World Trade Organization (WTO), despite being the second-largest economy in the world, thereby harming the interests of actual developing countries and other stakeholders in the market.

When introducing the report, Idaho Senator Jim Risch, Chairman of the committee, pointed out that the US and Europe have helped to establish the current order of the world upon principles of democracy and the rule of law that the world should be pursuing. He criticized China for attempts to undermine prosperity, security, and governance in every region in the globe, and is the "all-rounded opponent" to the shared interests of the US and Europe.

Australian Media Said a WeChat Group Organised to Complain University Staff, Suppressing on Giving a Higher Score

Australia is the first choice for many Chinese students studying abroad. The Australian discovered that a local WeChat group initiated an organised petition to complain about individual staff, intending to obtain a better academic result through suppression. The media then found out that the same group uses the same method to target lecturers and researchers who have ever criticised China.

According to The Australian, Sydney International Student Help Group, the WeChat group, claimed that they could overthrow the unsatisfied exam results or assignment grades at the advertisement in the chats and on the local Chinese websites. The media once pointed out that some lecturers at universities lowered the grade boundaries for students who have limited English proficiency, or else, they would receive complaints from hundreds of students. At the time, some affected students speculated that there might have other people helping students to organise and to write the complaint letter.

The group administrators are named “Chairperson” or “Senior” with unknown identities. After the investigation by The Australian, “Monkey King”, a migration and studying abroad agency, may take control of the group admin. The Australian therefore enquired Monkey King, but the spokesperson Katie Howe refused to comment on this issue. Nevertheless, the representative lawyer of one of the shareholders, Chenrul Dong, said that the company did use the group for service promotion, but do not have the permission to control the group. Apart from institutions, the company website also shows the corporation relationship with Chinese organisations, such as NetEase and Today Media Group.

Australian Prime Minister Ignored Criticism from China, Refusing the Amend the Policy “Australia is Australia”

The spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry Zhao Lijian listed out the “China-related wrongdoings” in the regular press conference on Tuesday, requesting Australia to reflect seriously. On the same day, an anonymous Chinese Official directly pointed out in an Australian media interview that the Chinese government is angry at Australia, and even provided a document from the Chinese Embassy in Australia with 14 dissatisfied “anti-China actions” by the Australian government to China. Scott Morrison, the Australia Prime Minister, said in a response on Thursday that Australia would defend their interest and would not change their usual policies. “Australia is Australia.”

Morrison said in response regarding the complaints from the Chinese Embassy in Australia on Thursday that Australia would defend their own interest and would not change their usual policies, including press freedom, elected members enabling them to express their views, as well as standing up for human rights. “If these are the reasons for the tense relationship between our two countries, it seems to be because Australia is Australia only.” He emphasised, “we will not compromise, rather, we will propose Foreign Investment Law, set up 5G network, or prevent the interference of our system.”
