#CUHK Management Censors Protest Photos Displayed in Exhibition; Flags with “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times” Covered

Joint Students' Unions of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) organised a photo exhibition to commemorate the "CUHK Battle" where pro-democracy Hongkongers defended the campus from police siege during the 2019 Anti-Extradition Law Protests.

In a call to the organisers, the university management was concerned with some wordings that might deem provocative. In the exhibition, the protest slogan “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times” which appear on some flags in several photos, were seen covered by black paper.

The provisional president of the Students' Union (#CUSU) pointed out that students had organised many exhibitions on the 1989 Beijing Tiananmen massacre. The university authorities had never expressed any concerns .

However, this time the university management called the students union several times and clearly stated that such an event would cause "dissatisfaction among some alumni, or the students' union would be targeted".

Au is very surprised by such reaction. He worries that the freedom of expression in the university is no longer safeguarded and the #CUSU would face difficulties when organizing similar events.

Au also pointed out that it is very normal for students to care about politics. He doesn’t think that the university president Rocky Sung-chi Tuan, who is currently attacked by Beijing loyslists, has sided with any parties. Au found it absurd for the Police Officers' Association to issue an open letter to condemn Tuan.

Hong Kong Students Organize Exhibition to Commemorate #CUHKSiege; Authorities: University has the Right to Refuse Visits

At the one-year mark of the police siege of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK), the Students' Union (#CUSU) organizes events including photo exhibition to commemorate the pro-democracy Hongkongers' defense of the campus.

The university's security office, however, placed a notice at the campus' entrance, stating 'Depending on overall risk assessment and pandemic control, the university has the right to decline entry of non-CUHK identity holders or individual visitors into the campus."

Jacky So Tsun-fung, a member of the Students' Union, said the notice was placed by the university management probably in the afternoon. He believed that the university authorities saw the anniversary of the "CUHK Battle" a "sensitive period".

Earlier, the authorities censored the commemorative events:

Democracy Wall Becomes Lennon Wall During the Commemoration of Battle of CUHK

A year after the police's attempt to siege the university campus, the students' union of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) held a retrospective exhibition on the campus.

The venue was crowded as many visitors came. As people stuck memos on the "democracy wall" of the students' union, it became a Lennon wall.

When the Power Authorities Rewrite History: Police Claim They Have No Intention to Siege University in the Battle of CUHK

November 2020 marks the one-year mark of the two battles in the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU) during the 2019 Anti-ELAB Movement.

As the authorities had notoriously altered the course of events during 7.21 Yuen Long Triad Attack, many were worried that the same would happen to more and more events in the city.

The Facebook page "No Stake Medical Student" refuted an interview with the police published by Ming Pao Daily point by point with news footages.

The following is a translation of this report by "No Stake Medical Student":

"Today, Ming Pao published a long piece of interview with police officer, with the alias 'X', who stated that the police had never intended to attack CUHK.

In turn, did the tear gas grenades that shown in photod fly to the university's stadium by themselves?

Officer X also claimed that “someone threw petrol bomb and it exploded right in front of the [university] president”.

To retort this with evidence: it was literally the Hong Kong Police Force who first shot tear gas grenades toward the university president Rocky Tuan Sung-chi on that day. After this, a petrol bomb was tossed. The protestors did not provoke the conflict aa it was depicted by officer X.

i-Cable News: "Rocky Tuan did not move forward anymore. Suddenly, the police shot at least two tear gas grenades. (A few seconds later), someone on the hillside threw back a molotov cocktail.

https://youtu.be/SNk9gWJWv58?t=42

The following video clips also recorded the police launching the siege by shooting tear gas grenades for no reason. The police were suspected to have been “attacked by laser gun”.

https://youtu.be/ditOvMqvZKU?t=108

https://youtu.be/bMN0YbVy2pk?t=96

The Ming Pao article also mentioned that “Dover urged to retreat”, “No death record because of the police was very restrained”. All are nothing but fallacy.

In face of rewriting history by the opponent, we can only rely on one and all to spread the truth.

By the way, all these police officer “X”, “Y” and “Z” are vividly proved to be false content, would Facebook make a clear tag as “misleading information”?

University Students: "President, you have to save us…I trust the humanistic spirit of CUHK!”

Dr. Leung Kai-chi is a columnist, commentator and guest lecturer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He wrote the following comtemplation on the one-year mark of the siege of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK):

"I don’t think I posted this photo before.

Rushing around during those two days, I didn’t have time to take any pictures. But somehow, I subconsciously felt that I must record this scene: this was the moment when the [University] President walked into student dormintory in the afternoon.

On that day, several teaching staff reached the President's Residence and asked him to come down. Originally they hoped that the President would meet with the students, rather than asking him to go to the No. 2 Bridge.

After entering the dormintory and still arranging the venue, a student suddenly rushed over in the corridor, holding the President's legs and broke down entirely with a wailing cry.

“President, you have to save us…”

“President, you have to save us…”

“My family wants me to study abroad, but I didn’t want to. I have to study at CUHK! I trust the teachers in CUHK! I trust the humanistic spirit of CUHK!”

“Principal, you have to save us…”

Later, more students rushed over and helped that student up.

Afterwards, the President walked to the lawn behind the dormintory and had a short-talk with some seniors.

I never knew what they were talking about, for I was in the process of setting up the venue. Soon, the senior came over and said: “no need to prepare, the President is ready to go to the No. 2 Bridge.”

In the 56 years that the school was founded, how much has to be accumulated to have such a moment.

Running around in these two days, I was trying to cool down the situation all the way, but in vain. But looking back on this scene, the essence of the matter was not President Rocky Tuan or anybody else saving the students, but the spirit and value for one and all to protect the university together."

#Exhibition in Remembrance of #CUHKSiege

During the Battle of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK), pro-democracy civilians, CUHK students and alumni defended the university campus against the police's siege. In memory of the fight, the students' union of the CUHK organized a series of events including a photo exhibition.

However, the university not only demanded the Students' Union to remove publicity material, but also censored the photos which show the slogan "liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times".

Nevertheless, visitors flooded to the campus to commemorate the unerasable event witnessed by Hongkongers during the 2019 Anti-Extradition Bill Movement.

"The night has given me dark eyes,
I use them to look for light."
--Gu Cheng, "One Generation"

Amidst the ashes and flames in the Battle of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, 20 pro-democracy protesters were arrested while countless were shot, injured and hospitalized.

Their only armor against tyranny is their courage born out of their love for Hong Kong.

One year slips away and there is no more shattered glass on campus. Students' voices are washed away by paint thinner. Lurking quietly and in shapeless forms, the suppression imposed by the regime and police brutality is visibly loud.

Traces could be covered up and wounds might get mended, but memory can neither be altered nor undone.

When the regime tries to silence those who survive, we shall scream even louder.

The eight empty grids, the flag being painted black and those twelve names are seeds: They will take roots, grow toward the light and blossom after this war.

Protest Sign: "Popo, Congrats! You finally managed to go into university and work in Central"

One of the most memorable protest signs was seen in Central, Hong Kong's financial hub on November 13th, 2019 .

It turns out that the Hong Kong police managed to “get into” not just one, but two universities.

*Editor's note: The sign was held up in mockery of the Hong Kong police’s actions on teargassing Central, as well as charging into university campuses, Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) and Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU) in November 2019.

University Graduates in HK Demostrate in Campus: "No Matter Life and Death, Live Up Expectations and Never Forget the Fight"

Part 1/3

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) graduation ceremony was originally scheduled on Nov 19, 2020. Due to the pandemic, it was held online.

Nearly 200 graduates initiated a demonstration in campus. They shouted slogans including “Liberate Hong Kong. Revolution of our times”, “Hong Kong Independence, the only way out” and “Remember the valiants. Release 12 HK youths”.

Some students held three fingers gesture and chanted, “Stand with Thailand”, to support pro-democracy protestors in Thailand.

When the march arrived at the “No. 2 Bridge”, where the police attacked the university last year, the graduates paid silent tribute for three minutes for all casualties in the pro-democracy movement.

The procession then walked back to the University Mall, the original venue for the graduation ceremony, and displayed banners, “Happy Graduation CU Rioters”, “No one is a winner in this revolution, but please stay to witness”, “Hong Kong Independence”. In the meantime, the graduates sang “Glory to Hong Kong” twice.

Some students encouraged those graduating students to uphold the spirit of the New Asia College anthem: “I'll proceed despite the hardships, my passion burns despite the weariness" (艱險我奮進,困乏我多情) and preserving humanistic beliefs. At last, they wish all graduates to have brilliant prospects.

When the parade passed “The Beacon” opposite of the CUHK library, the graduates re-enacted the Battle of CUHK last year by wearing halmets and gas masks, holding umbrellas, flags and a round table with the words “Sharp edges and corners, live up expectations” on it.

Some graduates displayed the names of 12 pro-democracy Hong Kong youths who were captured by Chinese authorities and detained in China since August 2020.

“Big P” and “Little P”, wearing the Guy Fawkes' masks from the film Vendetta, are this year's graduates of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK).

On the Congregation Day on November 19, 2020, they went back to the campus with hundreds of graduates.

Big P brought white ribbon in memory of the casualties of pro-democracy protesters who defended the campus against the police's siege in 2019.

Little P added that the white ribbon is a symbol of commemoration not only for the Battle of CUHK, but also for the Defense War of Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU). Little P said, “No matter it is life and death, we miss them [pro-democracy protesters] all.”

Little P hopes to reiterate the original cause by participating in the demonstration on campus and that the march could ignite people’s will to fight, remind people of the valiant spirit and commemorate the Battle of CUHK.

One year after the police's siege of CUHK, Big P’s memory was still fresh. More memories and sentiments were recalled when visiting the photo exhibition organised by the CUHK Students’ Union last week.

To Big P, the most traumatic moment was when the pro-demoracy protestors were being arrested in CUHK. He reminded himself to keep up the fight and record the truth.

He also lamented, “nowadays, wearing a ribbon is considered as a resistance all because the authorities think you are going against them.”

Kwun Tong District Councillor Eason Chan Yik-Shun is also this year's graduates of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK).

He said that Hongkongers were unable to express their feelings toward the pro-democracy movement, since the police have prohibited all marches and rallies in the past six months.

Eason Chan hoped the march at CUHK on Nov 19, 2020 could bring enthusiasm to the fight for freedom in society and remind everyone that “the [pro-democracy] movement is not finished.”

Eason Chan pointed out that the young generation of Hong Kong lost all hope and confidence to the future, owing to police brutality and injustice imposed by the Department of Justice (#DOJ). However, he believed that Hongkongers would continue to fight: “This is our home. We'll die, if we stop.”

Chan emphasised, “Many young people still have committment to Hong Kong". Chan also pointed out that the graduates' participation in the march showed that they would continue to come out and are not scared of being arrested.

Some parents also participated in the march on Nov 19, 2020. Apple, the mother of a CUHK student, said that she couldn’t stand still and let the authorities suppress the youths.

“As a parent, I have to come out and back them [young people] up,” she said. She felt heartbreaking to see how the students had sacrificed for the fight for democracy in the past year and all the casualties in the movement.

Apple hopes that the next generation can "enjoy freedom and live in Hong Kong safely". She reiterated that one shod not give up the fight in Hong Kong in face of the suppression by the Chinese Community Party (#CCP).

In Photos: CUHK graduates urge citizens to fight on for democracy and bear witness

Due to COVID-19, the Chinese University of Hong Kong had arranged to hold this year’s graduation ceremony online. However, more than a hundred graduates initiated a “graduation rally” on campus to bid farewell to their school.

A Stand News photographer invited graduates to take instant photographs, on which they could also write down their thoughts and wishes. Among them were Media and Journalism graduates and aspiring photojournalists; one was an incumbent district councilor; yet others were graduating from Social Science and wanted to become a teacher.

In Photos: CUHK graduates urge citizens to fight on for democracy and bear witness

Last year on the night before Hong Kong Police laid a brutal siege to the pro-democracy students at #CUHK, graduates marched from the Statue of Lady Liberty to the main building, stridently chanting anti-ELAB slogans.

A year has passed, and although no ceremony was held on campus this year, defiant new graduates marched along the same route, holding up a banner that read, “No one in this movement will win in the end; but please carry on and bear witness (這一場革命最終無人取勝 但請你留低一起作見證).”

Facing an uncertain future, what do these new graduates want to say?
